S8E4 Fake It Till You Make It Review · 4:01pm Apr 7th, 2018
Flutterbitch returns for vengeance.
I'll buy the contrivance of Fluttershy being the one to run Rarity's shop since they sell the idea with a funny montage. But it does get to be a problem when the third act has characters traveling between Manehattan and Ponyville several times in the span of a single day. Wouldn't have been a problem if Fluttershy was running the Ponyville store but then the upper-class plot woul fall apart. Ah well.
This was a lot of fun, it was cool to see this new spin on the tired "Fluttershy needs to be confident with herself" trope, with the playacting and her overdoing it and losing herself in the characters. You just know Andrea had a lot of fun doing this episode. The "rodents" bit made me snicker because I think it was more they're shocked at Fluttershy saying it when the slur itself. I liked the subtext that none of the Manehattan ponies are as sophisticated and intelligent as they seem and are also just pretending, so when Fluttershy acts more confident and sells her acting better, they roll with it to save face. Also, Moonlight Raven is here.
Just a lot of fun watching Fluttershy slowly degrade into a wretched bitch.
PS - Wasn't the shop called "Raritique For You"?
No, pretty sure it was always Rarity For You.
But yeah, while I was a bit peeved they forgot the "freaky knowledge of sewing" thing, it's one gripe against an otherwise quite entertaining episode.
I don't recall a "Raritique", no. The transcript agrees.
Anyway, I thought this was great. It doesn't make a lick of sense if you think about the plot, as you said, but this is like It Isn't the Mane Thing About You: a flimsy story frame on which to hang a sight gag. Except this time, the gag was the main event instead of the climax, so the flimsy story (flimsier, even) matters a lot less. Though I suppose it does make sense if you go with "everyone likes Fluttershy more than Rarity", which is hilarious. :V
If there's one thing MLP has always done well, it's poke fun at fashion and high society, and this is no exception. That's half of what makes it work, the other half being Fluttershy's amazing transformation. This is the best turn her character has taken since... probably Putting Your Hoof Down. <.< I mean, say what you will about AJ, they tend not to know what to do with Fluttershy.
But yeah, not amazing, but I definitely enjoyed watching it. :)

Hm, looking at the transcripts you're right. I guess it was just Tabitha's enunciation. Or I'm doing deaf.
Easiest answer: Equestria has developed bullet trains.
I can't wait to see the inevitable EG versions of Hipstershy and Fluttergoth.
As soon as I saw the premise for this episode, I knew it was going to be BORING and CRINGY. I was right. Ove the past few seasons, I have HATED how Fluttershy has been changing, and this brings it to the max. She is no longer the sweet and innocent pony that I used to love all the way back in season 2. The only way she gets she gets to be confident at anything anymore is if she's aggressively mean about it.
I did not like seeing this Fluttershy at all. And the fact that this episode is about fashion already bored me completely.
