Crusader Kings 2, free on Steam · 3:27pm Apr 6th, 2018

Some sort of anniversary giveaway, lasting about 24-ish hours more. Vanilla game only, none of the expansions.

Tried to get into Paradox's 'eat your life, OMG' style historical sandboxes a few times, Hearts of Iron mainly, but the slow pace and how there's usually no end-state beyond 'survive until X' has made me bounce off them so far.

(Can really recommend Stellaris, though. One of the more open ended 4X games out there, with a lot of options on just how you shape your empire.)

Anyway, never tried Crusader Kings 2 in particular, but hey, free's free and I've heard it's really good in that trademark Paradox way of slowly mutating via patches until you either love it or loathe it kinda way.

Link.

Fun fact: you can marry your horse into your family line and it will, in fact, give you horse descendants. They will mostly suck, being horses, but it is a thing you can do.

You know, I'm genuinely shocked I couldn't find a single MLP mod in the Steam workshop with that type of horse shenanigans possible in-game.

That's because it really doesn't even need one. There is a very amusing story about "Empress Rainbow Dash the Glorious" who reunited the Roman Empire and got rid of the schism between protestants and Catholics. Look it up sometime, it's hilarious.

Exactly what 4834333 recommended above.

Was an amusing read, I must admit.

Ah, alright then. I didn't look farther into the link, I thought it was just an imgur gallery.

I am completely amazed that you can apparently start to worship Cthulhu and then beat the crap out of him. This game is weirder than even I knew.

I've participated in some CKII-style forum quests, so I feel I at least have a vague idea of what I need to do going into it. The interface, however, is still a lot of stuff to learn, and the tutorial doesn't always tell you where a button is.

Ah well, I managed to get reasonably good at Dwarf Fortress, I can manage this one. Eventually.
