Midnight Sparkle is a rising star amongst the magi. She has proven herself time and again against threats as warlocks, hags, werewolves, and fey, but her recent successes yet leave her ambitions wanting.
An opportunity presents itself when the Archmagus of Eastmarch announces his retirement. The conclave to determine his successor—what should be a mundane thing—reveals a most tainted legacy as long-forgotten foes push Midnight to her very limits.
The next big Midnight story is nearly here. Expect the next chapter in the Creepy One's adventure to be posted March 5th-6th.

Looks like the same color as the shading in the front to me. Not seeing anything other than teeth myself.
You know, I was never really able to picture how off Midnight's smile was supposed to be. I know ordinary ponies found it disturbing, but I was never really able to figure out why. But if this is supposed to be a normal smile from her I think I finally have my reference point now.

Hmm. I can't believe I forgot about that one.
That being said, it's interesting to see that Midnight has a whole repertoire of unsettling smiles. The one in the portrait makes her look like she's on the brink of a panic-induced emotional breakdown, whereas the one in the cover here makes her look like's she's about to strap you down to a sacrificial altar and carve out your heart with an obsidian knife.
And that is why there are no batponies in the Winningverse.
