Dubs Rewatcher's Guide to Writing Retrospective Blog Posts · 7:49pm Feb 22nd, 2017

Gosh, you're all just a bunch of sweetie pies. I'd love to kiss you all.

Thank you so, so much to everyone who read, faved, upvoted, downvoted, and/or commented on Sunset Shimmer's Guide. I was quite scared about submitting a fic about Thanksgiving four months late, so I'm very proud that my fic ended up being the most popular romance fic submitted on Valentine's Day. I hope you all enjoyed the story—I know I enjoyed writing it.

Well, kinda. It did take four months, after all; I found myself stuck on the climax for over a month, always dreading having to go back and try to figure out what I wanted to happen at the dinner table. That scene went through a few different iterations before I got to the version you saw (originally, before I thought of the whole "dream-date" angle, they were just gonna go back to Twi's bedroom).

I got the idea for the fic a few days before Thanksgiving, and it was largely inspired by a piece of my own writing: a short flash fiction story I wrote back in September, about Sunset and Twilight falling asleep on a couch together. In that story, I dedicated a paragraph to talking about how much Twi's parents hated Sunset—an idea that I found compelling even weeks afterwards. So when the quintessential Family Conflict Holiday rolled around, I figured that I had to write it.

A few people commented on the story saying that they didn't like the ending because Sunset and Twi's parents never came to any sort of resolution. To be perfectly honest, however, I don't agree. When I started writing, I knew that I didn't want the two parties to come to a resolution. The point of the story wasn't that Sunset win their approval, but that Sunset learn that she doesn't need their approval.

That being said, I acknowledge the story had problems. I wish I had made Velvet and Nightlight a bit more sympathetic and/or understandable. As is, they really did seem like outright bad parents—maybe I'll go back at some point later to do some edits. But at the end of the day, this story took four months, and I'm appropriately happy with both how it came out, and the response to it.

So, future plans. Unfortunately, things are on a bit of a delay right now—last Saturday, my laptop (the only computer I have) finally died what might be its final death. It's at a repair shop right now, but depending on how broken it is and how much fixing it would cost, I might just have to bite the bullet and buy a new computer.

But once that's taken care of, I've got some plans. The next fic I'm gonna publish (probably) is a comedy titled The Endless Assassinations of Twilight Sparkle. After that is a romance tentatively titled Louder Than Words. I hope I can get them published quicker than this past story. :trollestia:

Finally: BronyCon! I'm gonna be there! Aah!

Yeah, not much else to announce besides that. The dates this year are gonna be much more agreeable to me, so I figured, why not? As the date approaches, I'll post more about where I'm gonna be and if I'm gonna get involved in anything.

So... yeah, that's it! Thanks again for reading, and I hope you stay tuned for what I've got in store for the future. Keep being lovely.

Would you thank me if I hypothetically printed it out and peed on it?

I mean at the very least you theoretically got a view out this hypothetical situation that totally didn't happen.

I hope to see you at Bronycon! We can gush over adorable nerd lesbians.

I wish I had made Velvet and Nightlight a bit more sympathetic and/or understandable.

you mean, like I suggested? :rainbowkiss:
