Man Who Changed His Middle Name To 'I Love Spam' Is Getting Married - In A SPAM Museum · 1:18am Feb 18th, 2017

This news article cracked me up so I just had to pass it along. I hope that you get a kick out of it like I did.

A man who changed his middle name by deed poll to Mark ‘I Love Spam’ Benson is getting married in the world’s only Spam museum in America.

Anne Mousley surprised her partner with the news, under the pretense that she was meeting him for an early Valentine’s meal.

Instead, the father-of-two was told that on April 25 he will be the first person to be married in the Spam Museum in Minnesota.

The soon-to-be Mrs Anne ‘I Love Spam’ Benson said: “He saw on the news last year that the museum had just been revamped and he just said ‘we are going there’.

“So then the wedding fund was turned into ‘saving to go to the museum’.”

Mark made deed poll history last year after changing his middle name from William to ‘I love Spam’- in tribute to his grandfather and uncle, who had both worked at Newforge Foods factory in Gateacre, Liverpool, where spam was produced in the UK from 1941 to 1998.

Mark even appeared on Loose Women to talk about his obsession with the tinned precooked meat.

The 42-year-old will also celebrate his honeymoon at the Spam Jam Festival in Hawaii, the state that consumes more of the produce than any other.

He said: “I literally don’t know what to say - it’s a dream come true.

“I had no idea she had planned this, none whatsoever.”

The couple, from Halewood, Liverpool, have daughters Milly, five and Evie, three, and have been engaged for seven years.

Mark eats a tin on most days and makes many meals using the canned food, including a Spam pizza and Spamanara (carbonara), as well as using it in his English breakfast instead of bacon.

He added: “I was brought up on it. My grandad, who fought in World War Two , used to share his rations with the Americans and then he worked in the Spam factory and my uncle did too."

“When that closed and it was moved to Denmark, the old factory became a Morrison’s and that is where we shop now and where I buy my Spam."

“When I changed my name it was a tribute but it has just escalated.”

Anne added: “Mark is definitely one of a kind. He is very, very unique.”

Sue Reay, from East River which handles UK PR for the brand, said: “There has never been a wedding in the museum before."

“I had to show the US team that Mark wasn’t just anyone and the extremes that he had gone to, so they have made a special exception."

“No-one else will ever get to marry there again and we are going to make sure it is special for Mark, Anne and the kids.”

Spam was first introduced in 1937 and gained popularity worldwide after its use during World War II. By 2003, Spam was sold in 41 countries on six continents. In 2007, the seven billionth can of Spam was sold.

American Manufacturer Hormel claims that the meaning of the name “is known by only a small circle of former executives”, but popular beliefs are that the name is an abbreviation of “spiced ham”, “spare meat”, or “shoulders of pork and ham”. Another popular explanation is that Spam is an acronym standing for “Specially Processed American Meat” or “Specially Processed Army Meat”.

In World War II Spam become a major part of the U.S. soldier’s diet. It became variously referred to as “ham that didn’t pass its physical”, “meatloaf without basic training”.

Rationing during the conflict brought it into the British diet.

Margaret Thatcher referred to it as a “wartime delicacy” and Soviet leader Nikita Khrushchev declared: “Without Spam we wouldn’t have been able to feed our army”.
