State of the Writer, April 2024!

    It's another boring one! I ain't wrote nothin'! :B

It actually feels lately like I've been crawling out of a pit? So maybe there's a light ahead? But it's also blocked by Balatro lol somepony save me D:

The only other thing relevant to this blog is that I've had notes for a vs. post sitting in my notes document for probably the entire month now, what is wrong with me? D:

Fic recs, April 22nd: Jordan179 edition

Once again, though a good bit late, I bring it upon myself to memorialize an author via reviews of their stories. Though this time, it's different, as I had no connection to Jordan179 and only learned of his passing (three years ago this month, coincidentally), from this post

Another post about video games and Youtube and stuff

If I'm going to waste time watching shit on Youtube, the least I can do is tell people about it. :P

Ceave is a crazy Austrian with a love of video games and a head for philosophizing about them. Plus he really, really hates coins, no matter how tasty they may look.

Do you like video games? How about philosophy?

I like one of those things for sure, but no one combines the two better than a Youtuber named InfernalRamblings, a former professional game developer who now creates hour and a half long video essays about the meanings of video games and how they relate to the world today. Here's a few highlights, since this is now basically my only

Crystal Moose is calling it quits. :C

In happier news, kits has edited and improved his story On a Moonless Night, with some help from yours truly. I gave it a Highly Recommended rating rather a while ago. If you've never read it, now's the time, for the rating remains!

Also, and this was literally delivered to my inbox the minute I posted this blog, Scribbler has done a reading of GhostOfHeraclitus's Twilight Sparkle Makes a Cup of Tea!

Today's reviews are a little wonky because I took out one of the readings for an edition. Something to look forward to!

Rainbow Dash Watches Clouds by Ezn
Reading by ShadowOfCygnus
Genre: Slice of Life
There's a lot more to this story than its title or opening might suggest. I hope I can be forgiven for not being hooked by that opening — ShadowOfCygnus has been reading a lot of old slice of life fics about Rainbow Dash, and they start blending together after a while — but once she starts comparing the clouds to herself and her friends (well, Fluttershy), that by itself was enough to make this worth reading. But then it keeps going, and while hardly subtle, presents an idea for the reader to tousle out of what's happened. Definitely transcendent of the slice of life tag.

Twilight invites Sunset over to talk about Equestria.
Speaking of fic premises certain readers read a lot of. <.< I definitely went into this with the wrong mindset, because I was disappointed by things like the questions about Equestria not turning up anything new or interesting. Of course, I was disappointed in the rest of the story, but I definitely got off on the wrong foot here. The main letdown is word choice, which frequently distracts from what's going on (I couldn't get over "girlhood", and any story that uses the phrase "sloppy tongue-filled oral mess" is doing something wrong). The bad shipping doesn't help, either; it's rushed through just as much as the sex. Which is to say, if you only care about the sex, you will definitely find some here, but if not…

Genre: Crackfic
Things get bad in Humania when the sun turns into a giant cookie.
And I thought the TMNT/EQG crossover in the popular box was gonna be the weirdest thing I saw all morning. :V This is a splendid piece of absurdity, the sort where I ask a question like "Why are Sonata and Aria there?" and then don't care that I never get an answer. It's ridiculous in all the right ways and includes some good skewering of characters the authors don't like. This will please anyone who enjoys a little trolling in their life.

A Mistake in Identity by JapaneseTeeth
Reading by Scarlett Blade
Genre: What Happened Last Night
Princess Cadence wakes up with a hangover and no idea what she did at the party.
To give away nothing more than what the character tags do, I need more stories where the similarities between Shining Armor and Vinyl Scratch are played with. I can think of one other, and I really liked it, too. Anyway, this is a fast-paced comedy that makes good use of POV switching between scenes as Celestia and Vinyl tell their sides of the story of what happened. Vinyl and Octavia's banter is great, and I really appreciate that Celestia is having a lot of fun at Cadence's expense, while still having done a lot on her part to keep the full details secret from the public. I mean, that's just good PR there. The story is full of metaphorical descriptions that… the words that come to mind to describe them are "egregious" and "convoluted". But this is still a solid comedy, and should have wide appeal.

Primp and Pamper by Waffen Pony
Reading (part 1) by Scarlett Blade
Mature: Sex
Genre: Anthro Clop
Seeing that Twilight has been stressed lately, she arranges for her friend to get a treatment at the spa she'll never forget.
With written sex, it either works or it doesn't; this doesn't. Through and through, this is very much a "standard" clopfic, whatever that means. Nothing surprised me, or was particularly interesting. It has too many fluids and too much "the purple mare" for my sensibilities. If you just want to read something sexy it's perfectly workable, but given how it ends, I had no interest in continuing on to the second chapter.
