Advice for how to be susceptible to Hypnosis · 6:45am Dec 3rd, 2016

I've been trying to find advice on Hypnosis to help me become 'hypnotizable' for the obvious benefits of either helping with personality flaws (shyness) or for erotic use. There's just a few problems...

1. Hypnosis has as much scientific basis and proof as Scientology or Astrology, or the belief that "I believe in God so he'll cure my AIDS." (looking at you Jehovah's Witness')
2. I've never seen hypnosis work or had it work on me, or seen any first-hand evidence that it works. (Stage magicians are just that, magicians, who plant volunteers.)

So basically, everyone says "Ah but you have to believe hypnosis works for it to work." That's like saying, "Ah, but you have to believe you'll phase through the semi-truck hitting you at 65mph for it to work."

It's a logical fallacy and it's fucking stupid.

Better example, "I'm only invisible if no one is looking!" That's what Hypnosis advice I normally get. (Pro-tip, don't tell me I need to believe for it to work or I'll probably be an asshole to you.)

But putting that aside, I can objectively state that I want the benefits of hypnosis. For instance, to convince myself to be more outgoing or not be depressed, or for erotic roleplay and such. If I can accept that a small suggestion like "You will smile when you meet a stranger" can be planted, is that enough to build off of for induction? Inductions are relaxing to listen to.

So am I just fucked and Hypnosis will never work because "I don't believe" (a.k.a. Hypnosis is total bull-shit), or is there some way around this mental-block?

p.s. I'm not gonna attack anyone that gives advice, unless it's particularly bad. I've been trying off and on for 6 or 7 years at random intervals to listen to hypnosis tapes. Inductions, forming good habits, the mlp pony hypnosis, various little tests, Second Life hypnosis. Written, audio, and visual methods.

And as far as I can tell from searching and reading websites and trying my best, Hypnosis just doesn't exist and never has. But thanks to the fantasy of hypnosis especially in Fiction, part of me wants it to work. And I either need to shit or get off the pot.

The only thing I can think of to make hypnosis "work" is through conditioning and subliminal messaging.

Well, hypnotic suggestion exists in the short term, minutes to hours but it's just that a suggestion that people have a compulsion to follow. It can be broken IF they want to though. True hypnosis I am skeptical of.

Personally I prefer other methods, that have a proven track record on people. That said, those methods can also cause some serious damage if dicked around with by someone who doesn't know what they are doing.

Feel free to PM if you'd like to discuss it further, but I don't really feel comfortable posting details like that on an open forum.

I've heard of some psychologists and therapists who use hypnosis as a form of treatment
4327109 Though I could be wrong

4327111 There are some, but it has questionable long term effects. Usually (IMO) the long term changes are from the habits started from short term hypnosis. So yeah, it can be the kick in the butt that gets you going for something, but it (probably) isn't the cause of long term effects.

That said, I am in no means a professional. I'm just going off of what I've seen in other areas of life.

Hipnosis is mostly bollocks. Only way it works is for the hipnotizer to give the subject suggestions and then they carry it out because they think it works. It's just like the sugar pill doctors give you and say it cures headaches.

Here's what I suggest: If you want to change your behaviour, just do it. Decide what you want to do and put it into practice and keeps tabs on when you revert to your normal behaviour.

In time it will just become second nature.

From IS classes (I know, weird): "Don't fake it until you make it. Fake it until you become it."

If it's erotic roleplaye, well, then just pretent it works. It is roleplay after all. :moustache:

Yea, same "problem" for me. I have read a lot of stories of "OMGOMGOMG I FEEL HOOOFES AND WINGS AND SHIT" of hypnotized ppl, but never realy got a lick of the described effekts. Some say all the time, that i "just have to let go" or something
whatever.

4327130
This makes a lot of sense when I'm not angry and ranting. Hypnosis works because people want it to work, decide "hey look it's working!" and just do what they're told. :pinkiegasp:

I've had a few lucid dreams even though I've never tried to train myself to have them. I've also had dreams where I'm half asleep and lights blinking in the room around me or other distractions will affect my dream. There are plenty of weird mental states that people don't experience in day to day life. While I can't say for certain that hypnosis exists, because I've never been hypnotized, I feel like it's extremely unlikely that no one can be hypnotized.

Also, I'd about guarantee you that there is a way to get someone in a very suggestible state using drugs. Something something MK Ultra.

4327149
Yeah, people are being a dick if they're like "I feel the wings omg it's so awesome!" and make us feel left out, when in reality, they just happened to have an itch on their back.

But the fantasy of any fetish is 100 times better than the reality of it in real life. Trust me, I almost got to try bondage once so I clearly know what I'm talking about. :rainbowlaugh:

It's definitely something that only works if you want it to and expect it to. You can probably get some effect from it if you "give it a shot" which could make it work better later, but I've only had one experience with hypnosis (and I was as skeptical as you are if not more so) which had any real effect, and it was where I went along with the narrative.

Also you damn well can convince yourself to feel wings or a tail if you put your mind to it and make yourself believe you can, it's a matter of will more than anything.

I've been trying hypnosis on and off for a few years now, and am in pretty much the same boat as you. I can get minor effect from certain tapes, but it's most likely just placebo. As much as I'd like it to, hypnosis probably doesn't do anything beyond that.

One thing I've found that makes the effects stronger is to make sure I don't really know the contents of the tape. New tapes have the strongest effect, as well as tapes that I haven't listened to in a long while. Even ones that say repeated listening makes the effects stronger. I'm not sure if it's just me, or if it's pretty common, so I'm not sure how effective that advice will be, especially when combined with the fact that you've probably listened to all the ones you know of that you're interested in.

4327150
Eeyup, pretty much.

I've had one occurrence when I was young that I woke up and saw a dream banana floating beside me on the bed.

It vanished when I tried to grab it. :T

2. I've never seen hypnosis work or had it work on me, or seen any first-hand evidence that it works. (Stage magicians are just that, magicians, who plant volunteers.)

I was going to go into a spiel about this...but i am tired and i think i'll just make a butt out of myself
so i will say this.
My dad was picked to go on stage and be hypnotized, and he was so freaking...
Okay so the thing was the guy was just knocking people out, and making them do thing
if anything looking back maybe they did ask him to just do random things,
The thing with my dad was he would just knock out on his own, then the guy would be like
'What the heck?' wake him back up then knock him back to sleep
like he was 'weak willed' or something.

as for actual hypnosis..i REALLY don't know
like that show the mentalist really reinforced the idea that suggestion was the closest anyone could come to hypnosis
and another story
in my psych class (yup i'm going there)
there is the scientific look on suggestion
if someone can not take ANY pain medication
there have been cases of people being suggested to not feel the pain
NOTE: i do not have ANY evidence to back this up, and i don't want to search anything right now, but my professor has said it was a thing when i asked her about it.
good night:fluttershyouch:

Sadly I have to disagree with you on the whole "hypnosis doesn't exist being" as I'm part of hypno ponies and have seen it first hand. Hypnosis isn't about making magic come out of your hands or physically changing you. It's about tricking your mind to think it has changed you or you did shoot a magic bolt. With that said there are a lot of factors that would block hypnosis from working on you. Your attitude towards it is a big one, if your constantly fighting it it will never work. On and off wouldn't work either. The worst part of it is that different people have different suseptability levels. I myself have been in your camp when it comes to not being very suseptable but I'm finally making some headway myself as of late. I say join hypnoponies, we've got quiet a few people who actually know a bit about hypnosis (myself included) and we can try to help.

I has no advice, only the sad comment that I've got a few cousins that claim they were out late, driving home from a hunting trip one night with some buddies, and hit head on by semi on a country highway going highway speeds or someshit.
'saved by the grace of god'
:facehoof:
Endangered by alcohol ingestion and idiocy.
Actually, just idiocy, they were too young and stupid for alcohol to be involved.

On a more relevant spot, according to a psychology class I took in college, hypnosis isn't often something that works, but it is a thing. Low chance of working, have to be susceptible, yada yada, apparently works far more often on mentally ill people, schizophrenics and the like

Sorry if it has been said already (because I am too lazy to read through every comment), but hypnosis does exist.

However, you cannot force someone to do something they wouldn't already do.

As for a trick to become 'hypnotizable', I don't think any exist. If you aren't already 'hypnotizable', then you can't be 'hypnotizable'.

"I believe in God so he'll cure my AIDS." (looking at you Jehovah's Witness')

God will not cure your AIDS if you believe in him. You have to have sex with a frog to cure your AIDS.

I love SciShow, how'd I never see this video?

4327199
I did see those studies on hypnosis / placebo effect where they could tell someone they couldn't feel pain and then operate on them. Those are some freaking crazy volunteers

4327245
That's probably where I got the mlp hypnosis tapes from 2 years ago but I am not sure where the group/chat/whatever went or if it's still around. I was just hoping to be like "hey my hand does kinda feel like a hoof! neat!" But repeated listenings to the tape never achieved that. So where do hypnoponies hang out now?

4328198 Youtube has been screwing up subscription services lately and not showing every video a channel shows in your subscription box... which defeats the purpose of subscribing to them in the first place, lol.

4328198 We're on discord now if you want I can nab a link to it. Really I personally don't like v3 files that they made, they never struck well with me. They do have some new generic files if you wish. It could also be a problem of different mental wiring such as ad(h)d messing with the way stuff works. Honestly, if you're just on and off again it's not gunna have the effects if you keep on it every day.

4328218
It is a bit delayed but sure I could hop on the discord today or later this week!

You can try to hypnotize yourself. It's kind of like meditating. I was never able to fully do it but the practice can be relaxing and a great way to clear your mind.

I can write up some basic hypnotic imagery practice if that's what you're in need of. The basics of that approach is to just increase your powers of imagination, and get yourself used to the idea of already being in the state you desire (ie: less shy, in your case).

With regards to the 'you need to believe for it to work': yes and no. The problem is that belief is both a cause and an effect in hypnotic practice. It's been a while since I've done it myself (resolution for the new year, even) but it boils down to:

-you focus attention on your hands, for example, and repeat to yourself they're getting warmer or colder, imagining that vividly. That's glove anaesthesia, basic skill you can develop.

-because you're able to do that kind of thing, you get a head-click, sort of a realisation, a feedback loop, that tells your conscious mind it's in control of more things than you previously thought. That belief, in turn, strengthens the effects on top of what the practice does. You believe your hands are getting warmer or colder, and because then they are, you believe that your belief has an effect. Hypnotic inductions involving arms or eyes feeling heavier use the same basic trick.

I suspect this is why William Fezler got so New Age hippy with his patients. It's his work I've tried, and I can attest it works to a degree. For erotic roleplay and helping cure shyness, imagery is suited well enough. But you 'risk' getting vibes of magic powers through your experience, depending what depth of trance you get. It's hard to explain, but the closest term would be 'God-mind,' the feeling that your perception and your will blend into one another. It's the same vibe you get when you're playing a card game and you draw the exact card you need at the moment you realise you need that card. It's like that, but without the adrenalin rush and more constant. Delusions of grandeur and magusitis can be side effects, too. It depends what you're trying to do.
