Fall TV Recommendations: "Timeless", "Milo Murphy's Law" · 3:10am Oct 4th, 2016

I've already gushed about Milo Murphy's Law, the new series from Phineas and Ferb creators Dan Povenmire and Swampy Marsh. All I need to say is if you enjoyed P&F you need to watch MML.

But here's one that might not have been on your radar at all: a new science-fiction drama on NBC, Timeless.

In Timeless, a soldier, a history professor, and a code monkey are tapped by the Department of Homeland Security to pursue a terrorist who has stolen a time machine developed by a cutting-edge tech innovator, which was kept secret from the government until it was too late. Wyatt, Lucy, and Rufus must use the prototype time machine to chase Garcia Flynn, who seeks to alter significant events in American history with the ultimate goal of killing America in its infancy.

In the premiere, the team chases Flynn to May 1937, where he prevents the catastrophic explosion of the Hindenburg. At first they're stunned that this terrorist stopped the disaster instead of setting out to make it worse...but then they realize his real plan is to destroy the airship on its return flight to Europe, when it's packed with luminaries who will contribute significantly to the history of America and the United Nations. Ultimately they succeed in preventing Flynn's plan with minimal loss of life, and the Hindenburg is destroyed a day later than it would have been otherwise. However, before Flynn escapes, he reveals the existence of a mysterious journal he carries that Lucy writes at some point in the future.

Upon returning to the present, the team goes their separate ways, but have very little time to process the way certain things have changed in the present before they're called to follow Flynn into the 19th century where he's about to prevent Lincoln's assassination. The significant impact changing minor events in history can have on the present are highlighted BRUTALLY for Lucy when she discovers significant changes in her personal life:

When she woke up that morning, she had a sister named Amy, she was single, and her mother was terminally ill. When she returned from 1937, her mother was in perfect health, Lucy herself is engaged...and Amy was never born.

I like this show. I'm going to be following it closely. It's basically the reverse of Quantum Leap, and promises to be a better "chasing an evil time traveler" show than DC's Legends of Tomorrow. Timeless airs Mondays at 10pm Eastern on NBC.

Might I recommend Longmire? It's fantastic.

I have that one recording for later.
Hopefully it sticks to the promise it seems to offer.

4239261 I'm sick of crime dramas. There are too many of them on TV and they all start to look like each other after a while.

Fair enough, man. I haven't watched a lot of crime dramas. In fact, the last drama I watched was House, so most are new to me.

4239287 The only crime dramas I've truly enjoyed in the last 15 years were CSI (the first five seasons, and I haven't even seen every episode of those) and The Mentalist. The rest are all...meh.

So what's your opinion of NCIS? (The original and its New Orleans spinoff are the only actively-running crime dramas I watch nowadays, with a periodic glance at the current version of Hawaii Five-0.)

Until next time...

4239313 Ah.

Well, it and its spinoffs are some of the better ones out there. (As was the series it spun off of: the legal drama JAG.)

that was tonight? dangit, i was busy playing Destiny. i completely forgot...

That sounds really interesting.
I may have to pirate that once I finish Luke Cage..

I watched the premiere, it's pretty captivating. I look forward to watching where it goes. A series that travels across main events with someone trying to destroy America is really quite interesting. It also questions your morals. Is it right to let people die for the sake of history? What if the Hindenburg never blew up? Would they have to die?

Anyways, a new show by the creators of Phineas and Ferb definitely interests me as well.
