Friendship is Card Games: Trixie and the Razzle-Dazzle Ruse

We return to the pony novels this week, and hopefully a better showing from the titular mare. Last time we saw Trixie in one of these, G. M. Berrow was channeling the fandom circa 2011 and making her and Gilda the designated antagonists of the piece. Let’s see what she’s up to this time.

No, not mine. The Barcast's. The last call is currently under way, and if you want to hear my part in the grand interview lightning round, you can tune in at 4:20 Eastern/1:20 Pacific (about an hour from this posting.)

Yes, 4:20 on 4/20. No, I do not partake. Sorry to disappoint. :derpytongue2:

    Pest List

Just something I whipped together for fun one day, set to a possibly recognizable tune, all intended in good fun. And hey, given that I derived my Fimfic handle from a misremembered detail of the Mikado, it's only appropriate. :derpytongue2:

It seems appropriate to ask this question on Sunset Shimmer Day:

Has hay bacon ever shown up in any canon source, or did we just perpetuate the meme from Epic Pie Time until no one remembered where it came from?

Comments ( 21 )

I'm pretty sure it's from Epic Pie Time. I sure don't remember it ever being canon.

Not that I'm aware of.

No reference to bacon has been made in the show, by humans or ponies.

Not in speech. The only time the word “bacon” appears in a canonical source that I could track down is in the name “Cart Bacon” in “Applejack and the Honest-to-Goodness-Switcheroo.” I’m not sure what this name is supposed to be a reference to.

There is, likewise, no clear depiction of anything resembling bacon that I can remember, other than the suspicious ham-like substance in A Bird in the Hoof, which probably gave rise to the idea originally.

That's what I thought. It just feels like there's been a gradual uptick in references to it over the years, and I wanted to make sure I wasn't going crazy in that particular way. Thanks.

4221592 It's just one more example of this fandom building on itself. Like Button Mash, Gamer Luna, and so forth and so on...

4221592

Actually, I don't think I can even see an uptick, unless I bungled the math again, it seems fairly stable ever since it appeared.

That's the search for "hay bacon" turning up per chapter, summed up over a month.

4221616
Well, that's subjective experience for you. Sometimes there's only a passing resemblance to hard data.

What, it's Sunset Shimmer day now?

4221621
Apparently. Just take a look at Equestria Daily's banner.

I always figured "hay-bacon" just went well with "hay-fries", and that's where it came from fanonically. :derpytongue2:

So uh... hay-fries were canon, right? :derpyderp2:

4221657
Yup. Have been since "The Ticket Master," when Spike orders them in lieu of rubies.

I remember when the Epic Meal Time guys were shoving bacon strips and bacon strips and bacon strips onto literally everything back when they started up. Then they shoved gay bacon strips into their candy episode. I just assumed the crossover into MLP came with that. I mean, those fruit rolls they were using as gay bacon strips were pretty fruity ;P and had almost as many colours as Rainbow Dash.

Also I assumed the whole bacon hoers thing would've started off in S2 with Flim and Flam. Maybe. Sunhoers Shiny is their sister?

Also, why is it Sunset Shimmy day? Am I late to the party?

4221668
Fun fact: You can see a clearly labeled bag of gay bacon strips for a few seconds in Epic Pie Time.

The Flimflams' manes have always evoked "barber pole" more than "bacon" to me. I think it's the singing and the boater hats. Put together, they're half of a barbershop quartet.

I have no clue why today is the day of the alien-phoenix-horse-ape, nor who decides this sort of thing. All I know is that it has been decreed thus by some undefined authority of pony holidays, and that we've gotten some fun Sunset stories out of it.

4221671 *looks it up* Er... maybe whoever made the choice is Canadian, and chose the Canadian release date of the first movie?

I'm baffled by the decision too. After all, September 22nd is CLEARLY Hobbit Day.

I've seen "hay bacon" in fanfiction, but it never made sense to me, mostly because I don't see how they could get hay to look or taste anything like bacon. Or if they could, it would take a lot of magic. Either that or it would be mostly made of soy and a small amount of hay.

4221779
And then there's the question of why ponies would want hay to taste like bacon. :applejackconfused:

4221784

Actually, here's an idea: a griffon cook tried to popularise a local speciality, like, say, bacon and eggs, but actual bacon, for obvious reasons, didn't take off. So he invested into making a substitute ponies would find desirable, and succeeded.

4221671 Gay bacon sounds like a euphemism. You may want to correct your typoe.

ETA: unless they meant rainbow fruit roll-ups.

4221860
That would make sense. And it would be a welcome example of another culture contributing something Equestria lacked rather than the other way around.

4221955
I'm not sure about the video yamgoth was talking about, but if you look 1:27 into Epic Pie Time, you will see very clearly labeled gay bacon strips. No typos.

4221955
This shot right here lol

4221671
I'm referring to this episode of Epic Meal Time

It seems Epic Pie Time was heavily inspired by the episode, going as far as to borrow some jokes. The crossover into Epic Meal Time certainly helped with the whole hay bacon thing. Dammit. I should've grabbed a
bacon strips &
bacon strips &
bacon strips &
bacon strips &...
shirt back then. Well, either that or rainbow alcohol pig.

And really, if there were no hay bacon, there would be no ponified Wendy's Baconator. Think of it. The Hayanator. A massive hay patty topped with strips of hay bacon, sandwiched between a hayseed bun. Oh, and grease. Copious amounts of greasy goodness.

And now I'm reminded of the time me n my friends went to a McDick's, but we had stopped by a Wendy's a few minutes earlier. So yeah, one of my friends was eating McDonald's, the other was eating a Wendy's meal, and I had a Baconator with a McDonald's Jr Chicken shoved right in, a little from both worlds. All in McDonald's. Hah take that comformity! Totally regret trying to be stringy and not buying a drink. That Baconator grease clung to the inside of my throat. I think the Jr Chicken on the inside was acting as some sort of absorbant...

Oh oh oh! And that reminds me of the time McDonald's advertised they would put bacon on anything for 99cents. We took that as a literal challenge and ordered crap like a cone with bacon in it, a cup with bacon in it for a pop with bacon, an apple pie with bacon, and even bacon on bacon! :pinkiehappy: It took a while to convince the staff to do it though. Had to point out that the ad didn't have any restrictions on what or what not to put bacon on and said they would add bacon on anything. Like literally anything. Damn we could've gotten a Happy Meal toy with bacon. I wish they kept that ad or maybe other people were being as big a dicks as we were. Oh man. That bacon Coca-Cola was so damn greasy... and bacon. It was so good.
