S6E16: "The Times They Are a Changeling" · 10:42pm Aug 20th, 2016
This is based on a single watch-through, but I liked today's episode a good deal. It was more successful than several Season Six episodes in blending a traditional FiM feel with modern canon. Actually, the extensions to canon were great; sure, they explode lots of headcanon, but there's nothing wrong with that; it seems to be S6's main aim anyway. Spike's song(!) was nearly fantastic; there were some rough edges in the lyrics (not unusual for this show) but I loved the style, which again harked back to earlier seasons. And Spike getting two good episodes in one season? What is this madness?
Also, the friendly changeling being called Thorax gave me, as a fan of Raugos's Integration, an extra chuckle. ★★★★
HAH! I was thinking of the fic author named Thorax, I didn't even consider Integration.
I didn't like this episode. It just seemed rushed from start to finish, and the conflict was too easily put aside. They could have at least said "We'll give Thorax a chance to prove himself." instead of "That was such a thought-provoking and beautiful song, Spike. So, yeah, let's be best friends."
4161639 Other way round for me. :P
4161851 I'm generally quite forgiving of a reasonable amount of rush; in a forced choice, I prefer it to very slow episodes like "Applejack's 'Day' Off". I think it's one reason I go against a lot of people and actually really like the S3 finale -- though even I still think that should have been a two-parter.
