    Droppin' By

Hello, I was in the neighborhood and had just realized that my last blog post was a bit of a downer, given that it was around the time of my Grandma's passing and funeral. I think I oughta leave you folks with something a bit more upbeat or at least something neutral.

    And Now, A Newsletter

Huh, back in July I said I oughta talk more around here. It's now the day after Christmas and I have not, in fact, talked more around here.

So, I'll give you the rundown on what I've been up to since then. Warning, it gets a little long in talking about last summer's vacation and about a new fixation I have.

Birthday Bios: Bananas · 1:56pm Aug 16th, 2016

I wanted to try drawing him with a tie. He looks pretty good with it, I want to keep it for his "older" design.

This guy is one of my cousin Golden Tree’s favorites, because he’s a lot like her brother—goofy personality, being the “tank” of the family, and is pretty creative—and his name is fun to say. That guy’s personality makes him a frequent actor in the videos that one of his brothers has made.

In case you’re wondering, the three cousins I mentioned actually come from a family of eight kids, like Bananas’ family! It’s great to draw inspiration from people you know in real life.

Of course, not everything about Bananas aligns with said cousin. Like how Bananas is second oldest of his family, while the cousin is the sixth child of his. Plus, some other things that I’ll cover under the break.

Bananas was born to March Redwood and Honeysuckle in the town of Neighton, located in the Salt Lick Valley. His hair came out similar to his grandmother’s coat color, and his parents noted that he looked a bit like a banana and was silly from the moment he was born, hence his name.

He could be accurately described as a happy baby with a contagious smile and a laugh that could be heard throughout the valley. Moments where he didn’t smile were rare, usually limited to crying thanks to hunger, getting hurt, or sadness at his big sister, Flora Peace, rejecting him.

One of his favorite pastimes when he was little was crawling all over his sister and try to get her to laugh. As Flora was a grumpy filly, she did not take kindly to his little games, often pushing him away to get him to leave her alone. It was fairly clear that Flora resented having to share her parents’ attention with him, and tried her best to avoid the little colt. However, Bananas always had a way of popping up when she least expected it.

As a toddler, he was happy to be introduced to his baby brother Ash Tree. While Ash, who just wanted to be left alone, was a bit difficult to have laughing, Bananas found ways to do so involving crayon fangs or tickling. However, sometimes he and Flora fought over who would play with the baby.

The next sibling, Olive, was significantly easier to entertain for five-year-old Bananas—though taking her “flying” with a catapult wasn’t exactly approved by their parents, even if he did have a parachute. Still, Olive could at least be entertained with toy trains crashing and flying everywhere with Bananas making explosion noises. Both thought it hilarious… at least until one certain day.

Their grandmother had taken the three oldest to the railroadside park that day, while their parents had taken baby Olive to a checkup. Being six at the time, the energetic Bananas was running around and making lots of new friends with strangers. He had foolishly gone up to play games like King of the Hill on the railroad, with no one stopping him because Grandma was asleep and Flora didn’t care.

He noticed a speeding train coming, so he started to flee. Unfortunately, the train derailed, and one of the cars rolled down the hill and punted the little colt. He was instantly unconscious, and a crying Flora came to his side and begged for her bleeding brother to wake up, up until the paramedics arrived.

Bananas woke up in the hospital, covered in casts and bandages and hurting a whole lot. It took a few months for his body to heal, but it’d take longer for him to have a mental recovery from his accident. He held a depressed and timid demeanor, having trouble cracking a smile should someone tell him a joke. He was in a mood of ‘meh’ when Ash Tree would draw on his casts, and get upset when Olive would be asking for the toy train crash again. He’d be having nightmares about the train, and hearing one whistle was enough to send him into a crying fit. It was bad enough that he needed to be sent to therapy.

Flora hated seeing her brother like this, and felt guilty for letting him climb up that hill in the first place. So, she decided to be Bananas’ therapy assistant, whether it be helping with the physical therapy necessary for his recovery, or helping him relax and talk about how he was feeling.

Bananas was surprised by his big sister’s turnaround, but he wasn’t going to turn down her services. She was his main source of comfort when he had a nightmare or a flashback, clinging tightly to her as if she’d protect him. They started meditation sessions together, and often liked to sit outside and feel the breeze. Flora was the only pony who could get him to ride a train to visit relatives, assuring him that she had his hoof in hers the entire way. Even if Bananas never really stopped being afraid of trains at any time in his life, he looks back on those two years fondly, as he grew closer with his big sister.

He wasn’t truly back to his full self until he was eight. During a walk in the park with Flora, he noticed a botched birthday party, where a mess of cake scattered the tables and chairs, the clown quit, and everypony was crying. Saddened by the sight, he felt compelled to fix the entire thing with his long-dormant party pony magic starting to awaken.

Soon enough, he was the clown of the show and making a bunch of five-year-olds laugh and enjoy cake. In seeing them so happy, Bananas felt the magical tingling of his cutie mark appearing. He later found out that Flora earned her cutie mark upon seeing his appear, which he responded to by calling his sister his “mark-buddy”.

After that, this chipper colt was the go-to clown for any birthday party. Taking notes at the circus as he watched the Great Ponyacci and learning tricks from his aunt Daffidazey, he eagerly discerned what did and didn’t work in comedy and circus antics. He liked to throw parties for his siblings’ or parents’ birthdays, and even took to celebrating the birth of their newest brother, Alfalfa.

One time when his talent didn’t work was when his parents were having a spat over Honeysuckle’s decision to convert the house into an inn without informing March of it. All his antics did was make his father angry, and combined with Flora’s attempts at reason, got March so riled up that he shouted at them harshly, making them both cry. While that event did get March to snap out of his funk, Bananas still felt like a failure for making his dad angry.

Even so, he kept on going with his talent. He’d go on to throw more birthday parties, including those for siblings Amber Waves, Willow, and Kernel Grin at their births. He’s usually the one to fetch gifts for Hearth’s Warming, or set up spooky attractions during Nightmare Night. Typically, he’d be recruiting his artist brother Ash Tree to help with some things.

He could be hanging out with any group of friends at any time. He sometimes likes to go out and do “extreme sledding” at one of the local ski resorts—which he used to save somepony’s life once. Sometimes he’ll help with the annual soapbox derby, set up a gazillion pranks on April Foal’s Day (some traps end up being sprung long after the fact), or leave surprises for any of the inn’s guests.

While he’s usually cheerful, he’s one of those ponies that you absolutely do not want to make angry. Much like his sister Flora, he’ll shout at you in a drill sergeant voice if he feels that you’ve crossed a line or intentionally triggered him with anything that reminds him of a train. As much as a tease toward his younger siblings that he is (save for Willow and Kernel since they’re little), he does not take kindly to ponies that bully them.

He was sad when Flora had to leave for college, and hugged her the longest and tightest when she was about to board the train. He even gave her a lucky charm so that the train wouldn’t crash, and performed his lucky ritual of feeding his minions (pet fish) so that his sister would live. After all, if his big sister died, he’d break down.

He enjoys receiving letters from her and learning about her Manehattan friends. He really wants to meet them—especially Nimbus, as he’d enjoy company from a fellow comedian. Bananas feels a bit lonely in his talent, as he’s been thinking that he’s the only one of his generation that possesses the weird magic that he does.

Of course, he’d learn that there are several others, like Pinkie Pie and Cheese Sandwich, that possess the same magic he does. He hopes that someday, he and all the other living party ponies would gather and throw one huge party for all their friends and families.

But, for now, he’s happy being the neighborhood clown.

He noticed a speeding train coming, so he started to flee. Unfortunately, the train derailed, and one of the cars rolled down the hill and punted the little colt.

I gotta say that leaping off a track to avoid an oncoming train, then having the train derail and one of the cars effectively chase you would be a lot more horrifying in real life than in Wrongfully Accused. Not funny at all, if it really happened to you. Violates your expectations of how things work. And it would leave you with a paranoid suspicion that trains were out to get you. Which is what happened to poor Bananas.

Worse because he was just a little kid at the time.

It's a lovely dream, but I'm not sure the universe could survive that high a density of party pony magic.

In any case, Bananas is a fine example of the healing power of love and family. He'll probably still have a fear of trains for the rest of his life, but the way he dealt with the trauma could've gone far, far worse without the support of his family.

I ship him with Comedy Gold. It would be so cute! X3

That pony is bananas, B.A.N.A.N.A.S!
