Enough Already! --Complaint Re: FimFiction and A Request for Help · 2:04am Jul 26th, 2016
Okay, so I'm putting this out there in the hopes that someone can offer some assistance.
For over a year or so the Library tab on my dashboard has had a (1) in place, indicating that there was an unread chapter of a story I was tracking/had favorited for me to read. Only guess what? There wasn't. Every time I click on the Library tab it takes me to a blank page, and clicking on my favorites (sorted by most recently updated) shows absolutely nothing new. Annoying, but whatever. So I left it at alone.
Then a few months ago FimFiction had its big update. Since then the counter in the tab keeps getting higher (now at 19) and there is STILL nothing there when I go to click on it! No new chapters! No unread chapters of my favorite stories! Hell, I haven't even added that many new stories that I'm tracking or favoriting (incidentally, why even have both of those things if there's a like/dislike button on the story itself?) but the counter keeps increasing! I went to the staff page ( http://www.fimfiction.net/staff ) and complained about this twice since the site overhauled, but I got nothing. No comments or feedback by the staff or anyone else. As you can guess, my frustration is rising because I check the page, see the counter increase, and expect to see that a story I like updated---only for the blank page to practically scream "LOL, TROLLO!"
Now, I have gotten alerts when a story I follow actually is updated, and when I read the chapter that alert goes away. But the others remain.
Has this happened to anyone else? Anyone got any ideas about what I could do?
I have 852 unread chapters, but that is due to laziness. I never expected some of those might be duds.
Did you turn on the mature filter?

And you win the cigar! Yeah, turns out that I must've switched the filter on at some point--probably when I got sick of all the stupid, fairly pointless and plotless sex-stories crowd the front page.
Thanks for the heads up.
But my counter has now returned to (1) and there aren't any other chapters or stories there for me to read. So I'm back to where I was pre-upgrade. Still, better than having my counter increase and not know why. So thanks again.
4113051 Simple things people. Simple things.
Another thing that helped me is to disable chapter tracking on the bookcase, save, and then reactivate.

No story has a point other than to entertain or for the author to share their mind. Clopfics have just as much a point as any other story, even the ones made to get you off. Porn has a point, after all.
I had something similar happen with a story was deleted by the writer... the system seemed to recognize that it used to exist, even though it had been removed.
4113051 as another friend here pointed out, try deactivating, then reactivating the tracking. had a chapter of Solitary Locust that i just could not see,, even by going through it page by page that i finally found by doing the above.
It might be a story you were tracking that got unpublished by the author so now it isn't visible in your shelf, but still exists on the site. I know that when an author I follow recently did a total rewrite of a story, my shelf still show 12 stories in it while I could only see 11 of them. Luckily for me that sorted itself out when they relaunched the new version.

Yes, you're right. I'm not slamming clopfics as such ... just ones that have no set-up and just exist to show the most obscene and fetishy kinds of sex acts with characters (adults and children) as possible. Basically stories meant to shock and horrify more than actually be good.
4113251 Shock and horrify? I'm pretty sure most of those are actually made to get a niche type of people off, only a minority actually try to shock and horrify. Sometimes a strange and outlandish fetish is written about because no one has written much about it and they wanted it written, not because they wanted to shock people. Although, there are exceptions of course.
Well, what you do is you create several new bookshelves with different categories of things you are reading, and move every one of your stories to one of the new bookshelves, pretending that you were going to do this anyways, but watching to see if that one read goes away. If it doesn't after you remove all the books, kill the bookshelf. If it does, and moves with a story, then you know which story is giving you trouble.
There is an upper limit on how many stories you can add to bookshelves in a day, btw. If you run into it, wait 24 hours or so before finishing.
It's entirely possible I've done this before.
Try the removing the tracking and putting it back suggestion first, though, and anything simpler suggested...

Odd... mine stays at a steady 79 unread when I'm not reading anything new, and that's simply because of two stories I placed in both Favorites, Tracking, and (in one case) Video Games totaling up to that number. Then again, I've only been on the site since... 9th Nov, 2014 according to my profile, so maybe I just haven't been here long enough to get attached to a story that gets deleted... probably helps that I immediately remove any that have "Cancelled" for their status from all my shelves. Speaking of which, I should probably do that again...
