Should Gravelord Nito speak? · 2:43am May 9th, 2016
So now that I have at last brought another major player back into the plot, I find myself at a crossroads of indecision. Ironically Gravelord Nito was about the only NPC from Dark Souls that I could almost immediately assign a voice to, yet amidst the forums, parodies, and other fan related media for the franchise, the opinion is pretty much unanimous that he remain silent.
If you're curious, when I ran into him during my playthroughs I was reminded of this scene from "The Adventures of Mark Twain" (don't ask why):
The way Satan sounds so passive, yet apathetic, combined with his voice being comprised of multiple people (one male, one female), I can so easily see Nito sounding like that. By the same token, however, I can also see him serving his role in the story without uttering a single word.
As such, again, I ask my readers for their input. Should Gravelord Nito have dialogue like the other Dark Souls characters or should he retain his mystique as a silent harbinger of death?
Hmm, I think the Mysterious Stranger's voice fits, but make it a bit deeper, gravely
I'm down with him speaking as well.
Hmmm, I would say that if he does speak, a mix between the skeleton blacksmith's form of vocalisation, although darker and more ominous. Perhaps like you say like Satan from The Mysterious Stranger.
I think him speaking would be good, but through telepathy maybe? It seems like him being oppressive and ominous that way would really work but, I'm not sure if that would actually work lore wise, have they figured out telepathy? Who knows.
Making him speak would add a lot of character to him I say go for it. Also quick question I might have missed it somewhere but is Nito a bad guy or will he be good.
It's far more imposing if he doesn't speak. Just have him gesture slowly with a limb or two, and get his strength across to the ponies via the Chosen Undead and Seath's reactions.
3931815 I'd hope Nito would be evil considering some of the implications about his past in the game.
I would say to let him speak but not often. Like he is capable of it but won't unless he has to. Also the choice of voice you picked would be perfect if it was more... echoey .
Hehe, that voice is my new head cannon for Nito now.
Hmm, as for giving him a voice, you could very well do that but why not with a little twist? Seeing as he is composed of a literal fluffton of skeletons and even has some sort of skull necklace, why not have them talk instead of his "main" head? That would even explain the several overlaying voices, seeing as actual several people ARE talking at once while all his "main" head is doing is silently glowering at Choosen Undead and Co in best Mark Twain manner.
Just my two cents.^^°
I'm in favor of giving Nito a voice that goes against what most would expect of him.
"Nito! STOP...HELPING!"
Nito: "Gee wilikers Twilight, guess my miracles aren't good for acupuncture?"
"They're dead. You made a lot of swords come out of the ground, and killed lots of ponies."
Nito: "That's bupkis! You should see where I used to live. Skeletons everywhere!"
"Ugh...just...bring them back. So much paperwork I'd rather not deal with sending the Princess."
Nito: "But...won't they look like skeletons?"
"We'll say they are trying a new diet."
Go for it I'd love a speaking Nito.
Well you made manus tlak, so nito isn't that far of a stretch.
3931988 THIS
3931950 I just really want to see my favorite dark souls boss be good because I want him stay the rest of the storry, but if he must be evil then so be it
I'd rather Nito be a character, that if he did talk. Would perhaps only speak rarely and maybe have an echo to his voice. As if he's got more than one voice or he's speaking from very far away ^^;. He rarely ever has to talk, since he's surrounded by skeletons 24/7, But he is able to speak, otherwise the alliance with Gwyn and the others would have been a massive pain in the ass to figure out, since I doubt they knew how to write back then. Or use sign language =p.
Minor thing, but if you go back to Oolacile, perhaps with Seath in tow. He could encounter Kalameet. That would be an interesting meeting ^^.
3932406 Well to perhaps put your mind at ease a bit, Nito's not going to be back just as a one shot boss. He's got a role to play and it's not going to be purely malicious in intent.
3932042 Now you're making me want to do a blooper reel where we see the cast off the set and out of character.
I'd say he should. Because how else did he originally make the pact with the others lords? Through interpretive dance?
3932671 well at least he'll be around for awhile I hope he isn't being controlled
Hmm. Regarding whether Gravelord Nito speaks or not...I'd personally go with that he only speaks when absolutely necessary.
Reason I was thinking Gravelord Nito just doesn't talk is he doesn't see much of a point in it Unlike the Undead or even Seath, he's pretty much Death personified. For him talking is a relic of the living, and something he's long left behind ( I go by the headcanon that Nito's title as "First of the Dead" is exactly that, he was the first living being to die.) I think he probably communicates with his servants more through concepts and direct manifestations of ideas or orders: an example is, say he has a skeleton under his command. Rather than tell it to go over there and stab that squirrel, the mental image and meaning is relayed to it with his will.
He'd only talk when pressed, or something incredibly serious is about to go down. On scales of seriousness, imagine the caste and him about to go through a door. He peeks through first (why he is peeking I have no idea), and slowly closes the door before backing away. When they ask him what's wrong, he tells them that he saw over five hundred Manus like creatures on the other side.
Awkward example, but I think it gets the point across.
Edit: whoops, posted this on your main page. This should fix that.
Speaking...that is difficult to say.
Obviously he needs a means to communicate for he allied with the other Lord Souls to bring down the dragons.
I"m honestly leaning more towards offensive empathy. In that he can project emotions and such on to others. A sense of urgency instead of "Hurry." Would make for a very overwhelming manner of speech in a sense. All but overwhelming even Sethe with his power and age.
I'd say the he'd only actually "speak" (or whatever he uses in place of vocalization) when he couldn't accurately convey himself otherwise.
