"No Second Prances" - Thoughts... (spoilers, obviously) · 4:40am May 1st, 2016
Sooo... Who else thought the opening of the show was horrifyingly awkward? Like, wow. Just so heavy-handed.
"Starlight u need 2 make friendz plz so dat I look gud"
"lol, wut if I just brainwashed ppl?"
"STARLIGHT, OMG, UR SO EEEVIL!! STAHP DAT! UR SPOSED 2 B REFORMED. SWEAR 2 CELESTIA IF U MAKE ME LOOK BAD--"
"wwwwuuuut? j/k geez"
Cue the sad trombone and the laugh track. The only thing that could have made it worse was if Starlight said some dumb catchphrase (DYNOMITE), the camera zoomed in on her face, and she winked.
After the opening sequence, things still sort of limped along. Me and husbando were wincing the whole way.
Then the bit where Trixie and Starlight start talking came around and... well thankfully it got better. I admit, I like the idea of these two being friends...
FRIENDS.
I can be a pretty bad shipwhore. But this? The whole idea of growth and redemption is ruined by making these two into a romantic pair. I'd much rather read a friendship fic about these two then one where the only reason they seem to want to be together is because they think the other one is hawt. It's become a bad joke in the shameless promotion group.
And what the hell was up with Twilight's characterization this episode? Seriously? You're going to shove a bunch of ponies Starlight barely knows into the dinner, then lie to Princess Celestia by claiming they are good friends? I know Twilight's a teacher's pet that craves approval, but I didn't think she was a fucking scam artist. Celestia also seemed a bit on the bitchy-side. She usually comes across so motherly and forgiving. Not this episode though, and I didn't like it. (though I did kind of laugh at the last gag about her hair)
Sorry. I think I only just processed my feelings about the episode as I'm typing this out now. When the episode ended, husbando and I agreed that the first half was just downright bad (with the exception of the Fluttershy and Starlight joke, which got a laugh out of me), and the second half was kinda-sorta okay at times. I like the new dimension added to Trixie. I just wish the execution of this episode had been a lot better.
I've liked all the episodes so far in this season. But this one... Well, it's definitely my least favorite. The one thing I can take away from it is that it has added to my growing list of "fics I hope I get around to writing some day." I want to do a comedy adventure thing with Trixie and Starlight. Maybe they have to go on a mission together or something? It'll be like a buddy cop thing. But with magic. And pastel ponies.
EDIT: Wow, I keep repeating words this post. Ah well. Stream of consciousness. Sorry, not sorry.
One of the amazing things I've found about this season is that no one can agree on which episodes are good or not.
3909418 I've gotta say, there does seem to be an unevenness about this season. MLP:FiM is getting to that point where they have to find a way to keep things going without the proverbial milk going sour, but while this is the first real stumble in the season for me, the all-over-the-place writing is making me nervous...
3909426 Yeah, I suppose. The did have a few writing alumni leave, so I guess the new guys are getting used to having their run of the place.
We'll see how it goes from here.
3909433 Yeah, I'm nervous but I'm not freaking out like some people are. The writing team has new blood. They'll figure it out. Hopefully.
I'm going to have to disagree on a number of points, but I said it best in my blog. To make it short, I actually really loved this episode. A lot.

3909426 That doesn't sound at all strange. I thought the fandom rarely agrees on any episode of any season. Going back a ways, there were incredibly few episodes that have resounding positive or negative reactions in the majority of the fandom. {And even then, I've met a few people who didn't like them. One even said that Pinkie Pride was the worst episode of the show.......I'm not joking. They actually thought that.}

This is true. I seem to recall people despising Slice of Life, and yet that's one of my favorite episodes.
People hating Pinkie Pride? Madness!
It is entirely possible that, with time, I might be able to look back on this episode more favorably. There's been a few episodes in past seasons where my first time watching it, I just didn't like them. Then when I re-watched them, I decided they weren't so bad.

*snorts coffee up nose*
I don't know why everyone keeps talking about this. It's starting to scare me that literally everyone has gone insane and hallucinated an episode yesterday...
