Double Deal · 12:38am Apr 25th, 2016

Two things to note:

Firstly, I've acquired the pony comic Humble Bundle, which means that I can theoretically do Friendship is Card Games articles for the comics... and in some cases, that will mean demonstrating why I'm only a fan of most everything, because shave my mustache and call me a Minnesotan, some of those comics suck.

Secondly, SirNotAppearingInThisFic interviewed me a bit ago, and said interview is now live. I'll be keeping an eye on the article to answer questions for the next several days, so if you missed the AMA last month or you just want to see someone pick my brain, now's your chance.

I picked them up to do more research for my Hyper 'verse, since I'm setting it at what would be Season 10. I'm still not sure what to think about a series that involves referring to Sombra's fillyhood, showing a picture of him as a colt.

Hm. It's been a while since I watched AT4W. I should get back to that at some point

I haven't kept up with the comics. The last one in the main series I read was probably the pirate one. Like you said, some are good, some... not so much :pinkiesick:
I'm still thinking about picking up the bundle though.

The quality spread on the comics is ridiculous. They really range from best-in-canon showpieces to "how did this get published?" Same's true of the show, to some extent, but I think the greater freedom in plots and art styles and such throws it into sharper relief in the comics, or maybe just the fact that it passes through fewer hands and thus regresses to the mean less.

Respect for this, bro.

You really should change your name to GoodAtMostEverything, because even your interviews are entertaining and insightful.

Every time IDW publishes a FiM comic, the gods flip a coin.

I second what 3894048 said. Some of them are really, really bad... and some are incredibly good. Overall the quality is not as good as the show, but it has some advantages. Non-mane cast characters can get whole storylines devoted to them (the Big Mac and Shining Armor/Cadance storylines are both amazing), Princess Luna is better in the comics than in the show, the artwork and design is a lot more flexible than the flash assets of the show can hope to be...

And of course, Star Swirl the Bearded. My user pic is from the comics for a reason.

Hope you find them interesting, anyway.

OMG do eet Foamy! Like, do cards on the pirate arc with foamy seas and high adventure! YAAAAAARRRRRRR!!!1! Honestly, I forget if the story was good or not, mostly because I forgot the story :B It was awhile ago. Like, one or two years ago. I mostly remember pirates (YAAAAAARRRRRRRRR!!!!). Think of it this way. You'd be crossing ponies with (cannon) pirates with Magic. And like, pirates are blue, and blue evidently is one third of the way to SCIENCE!

Pretty much the only other thing I’m willing to share at this juncture is that MrNumbers once said that looking at my mustache could restore one’s faith in humanity, which I can confirm has happened on several occasions.

Umm... I find the moustache sexy. What?! I can't help it. Quite the surprise, honestly. I remember trying to speculate how you looked like awhile ago before that one video and I was close, minus the moustache. Like, thought you'd look younger, but the moustache makes you look a bit older and sexier. I know only one other guy who has sported that kind of moustache... wait, does Arch style his like that? I forget. Maybe two?

Anyways, find the moustache sexy, yes homo. So does this count as a case of your moustache restoring faith in humanity? :moustache: Because humanity does suck, but teh sexy can make you forget for a little bit.

I think it counts.

Fuck. Maybe I should grow a moustache again...

Pirate is an established Magic creature type...

I'll probably set up a poll to decide which bits to focus on first.

Or you can go the OCD route and do cards for arcs and ministories in the order they were released, skipping over the ones you don't like. Because order is proper :duck:  Also, what exactly did you buy? I'm under the impression it gives you like complete access to all the comics they've published.

I went for the $15 option, so I have quite a lot to work with. I really wanted to get FIENDship is Magic so that I could give the siren origin comic the reaming it so richly deserves. :twilightangry2:

Foamy? Ripping something a new one? :rainbowlaugh: This I'll see to believe :duck: That being said, I'll regret ever seeing your war face, won't I? :twilightoops:

The Sirens comic... I thought it was ok. Like a "meh... ok" on my own personal scale, which would be the low end of being ok. I mean, they did some things right. Sonata amused me. The whole Starswirl vs the Sirens was visually amusing. But how Starswirl ultimately deals with the issue by sending them off to EqG world with the added bonus of time screwage... what...? Like, I get that they're trying to show how Starswirl sucks at befriending people, but I left that comic asking how in the hell this could've been shown better. And couldn't come up with anything. Anyways, the ending felt unsatisfying and raised questions on how it fit in with continuity, if at all. Rest of it is a visually immersive romp, if I'm recalling thing correctly. Sonata did Sonata things.

So, uh, I guess that's my beef with the Siren comic. What's yours, Foamy? Or should I wait til the card blog comes out?

I'm going to restrain myself for now. Rest assured, I will cover my grievances with that pile of tripe in due time.
