Yo-Kai Watchday Extra Edition: Youkai are watching you beat Yo-Kai Watch! · 10:26pm Mar 30th, 2016

Watch! What time is it?

BLOG TIME!

WHIS!

Katie's Summer Diary #11

It's a bright, clear morning!

Whisper is worried about that vision we saw in Draggie's crystal ball. Whatever those bad Youkai are planning, it can't be good, especially if they're not getting Lord Enma's permission to enter our world.

While we're talking, Mom comes upstairs, bringing my friend Lucas from school. Lucas wants to talk--he's upset about something.

It turns out Lucas is able to see Youkai! He also has this key he's had since he was a baby hanging around his neck, which according to Whisper is the key to the Youkai Elevator at the Mount Wildwood Shrine, which is the entrance to the Youkai World. Lucas has had dreams and visions about going to the Youkai World with me.

We head for the shrine, where Lucas unlocks the Youkai Elevator, and we travel to the Youkai World. It's a weird place, and the main thing we see when we arrive is this huge ancient Japanese castle!

At the first gate inside the castle, we run into the powerful Youkai who has helped me before--Orochi. Orochi is angry that I brought Lucas into the Youkai World, because he's "our last hope" against the boss of the evil Youkai. Orochi tries to force Lucas to go back, but my Youkai friends have grown strong enough to defeat him. Since he has no choice but to let us pass, Orochi finally explains who he is and what's going on, and why Lucas is so important.

Here's the gist:

Youkai do not live forever (even though they're technically dead to begin with). The peaceful and wise ruler of the Youkai World, King Enma, died a while back. In his absence, an evil Youkai named Chairman McKraken led a political revolution and seized control of the Youkai World. Where Lord Enma wished for peace between humans and Youkai, McKraken wants to invade and rule the human world with chaos and fear.

Oh, and Lucas is the son of King Enma, sealed in human form with his memory erased in order to protect him, and Orochi entrusted his safety to me because I have the Youkai Watch. These are things I really wish I'd known like, a long time ago! Seriously, this is all super-important stuff and I'm only hearing about it now, right when this McKraphead is about to invade our world?!

You suck at your job, Orochi!

So anyway, after all this, Orochi gives me his Youkai Medal. ...yeah, I don't think I really need your help anymore, dude.

Orochi takes Lucas back to the human world, while Whisper and I press on to deal with this whole squiddy mess.

At the second gate, I run into that giant red oni that's terrorized me periodically for the whole summer! I nearly peed myself when I thought I'd have to fight him to pass, but it turns out the only thing he's interested in right now is how many people I've helped over the course of the summer. I've helped more than enough people to impress him, so he lets me pass!

The blue oni at the next gate tests my honesty. That's a simple enough test to pass.

A bunch of Youkai keep trying to convince me to jump off the sides into the clouds, tempting me with things I might find interesting or yummy down there. Hey, I watch DBZ, I'm no dummy! I know what happens if you fall off Snake Way!

The next gate is guarded by a black oni, who judges my worthiness based on how many battles I've fought. I've fought enough battles to be allowed to pass. Yay! ...I think?

I mean...is that really a good thing for a ten-year-old girl to be able to say?

So after that, I made my way to the big bad throne room of McKraken. He...honestly wasn't much of a challenge. My Youkai friends took him down pretty easily.

So...I guess it's over? Time to head back home and check in with Lucas.

When I get back, Lucas tells me he can't shake the awful feeling that something bad is about to happen. Whisper agrees--something's up!

Kyubi shows up and tells us that while we were fighting McSquidbutt, his lackeys came back to town and broke the seals, turning my hometown into a giant Youkai power plant! Oh my god! This is terrible!

Slimamander reappears and attacks. He's much stronger than he was the last time, and it takes a while to put him down. After the battle, Orochi comes along, warning that Youkai from the depths of the Youkai World are on their way to the human world! Whisper suggests closing the Youkai Elevator, which would sever the connection between the human and Youkai worlds. Every Youkai in the human world would return to the Youkai World, and would never be able to visit again.

I...I don't want to say goodbye to my Youkai friends...but if this is the only way to save my world...

But first, we have to make the seals stronger. Much stronger. Which, for some reason, first involves making the sakura bloom. Whisper and I rush off to do that while Orochi and Kyubi hold the line against the invading Youkai.

After I run around defeating bad Youkai and making the sakura bloom all over town, the powerful Youkai trying to invade start fleeing back to the shrine where the Youkai Elevator is. We've got them on the run now!

Racing to the mountain shrine, we find McKraken at the Youkai Elevator, gathering all of the powerful evil aura he's managed to hold onto around him. He's not willing to go down without a fight--he uses all the evil power he managed to generate to transform himself into a bigger, nastier form!

This is it. This is the battle that will determine the fate of two worlds.

With the help of my Youkai friends, we face down this huge, evil demon squid and totally kick his sorry butt. McKraken's plans are foiled, and our world is safe again.

But peace comes at a price, and the price I have to pay...

Whisper tells me that as long as there are evil Youkai like McKraken around, this could all happen again unless the bridge between the two worlds is closed forever. It's...

It's time to say goodbye...to all my Youkai friends...

All I can do is stand and watch, crying, as Whisper seals the Youkai Elevator. One by one, they all go away...

Jibanyan...

Walkappa...

Komasan...

Orochi and Kyubi...

Whisper...

...and even the Youkai Watch, which disappears from around my neck, as though it never existed at all...

Goodbye, my Youkai friends...

Goodbye, until we meet again!

YO-KAI WATCH

THE END.

Youkai Medals Collected:
Venoct (aka Orochi)

Moth's Thoughts:

As expected of Level-5, Yo-Kai Watch is a hell of a game, full of memorable characters, fun gameplay, lots of stuff to do, and an emotionally impactful ending that leaves you in tears.

The final boss battle is...rather underwhelming, though, to be honest. McKraken, even in his final form, simply isn't that challenging a boss. The worst thing he does is inspirit up to three of your Youkai at once, which just means you have to rush to purify them one by one while the rest of your team keeps dealing damage at him. He has a lot of HP, so it does take a while to finish him off, but he isn't especially challenging.

There's a lot of postgame stuff, of course, which I'll get to as time permits.

I can't wait for the English version of Yo-Kai Watch 2!

Yeah...says something about games like that. What does it say about 10 year old Ness that he's level 99 by the time he fight Giygas? Just how many battles has he fought?

3837723 If you're facing Giygas at level 99, you're doing something wrong. Unless you were grinding for Poo's equipment and just got REALLY unlucky, then that's understandable.

That second part. Damn it's hard to get the Sword of Kings.

...and then later grinding for Star Pendants.
