The Danger of One's Ambition Exceeding One's Ability · 10:36pm Aug 26th, 2012
When I started writing I Forgot I Was There, I'd never written anything more than short stories. So naturally, I decided that I would write a sprawling, interpersonal epic involving the entire mane cast and just about every named character on the show. It seemed like a good idea at the time.
Early on, I was unsure of the quality of my writing, or of my ability to stick with it, so I kept the chapters short -- between 5000 and 8000 words. That made it easier to write, and let me get the thumbs up and fav's that I subsist on instead of food. In general though, the story is not designed for such short segments.
The next chapter is going to be about 25,000 words in length when done (about halfway there now). Longer chapters means a significant change in tone. Arcs and scenes can be more complicated and intermeshed, and the pacing can be slower. I feel a bit like a bait-and-switch artist, drawing readers in with early, lighthearted chapters only to switch to this, but we'll see how it goes.
If you find a way to churn out, good, sprawling, train-wrecks like Short Skirts and Explosions, I for one will have no problem with the change
If you say the quality is going up, no complaints will be made... great work takes time, and you have our patience
If the upcoming "change in tone" is anything like what the end of Chapter 6 has led me to expect, I look forward to reading it.
Twenty five thousand delicious words waiting to be devoured, you say?

((I should have some time tonight methinks))
Sir, I am here for the excellent writing style and the masterful take on an interesting premise. I, for one, welcome our new giant-chapter overlords.
I just finished reading that chapter.
I er, don't think you have any reason to doubt your abilities as a writer ever again.
Wow.
