Top 5 Scythes in Pop Culture (Mainly games, though) · 9:44pm Feb 4th, 2016

Something to fill the void. Literally!

How's it going everyone? My name is SuperKamek and welcome to yet another list I created because... why the fuck not? Everyone has their favorite weapons, there's no denying that. From the simple paper and pen of the pacifist, to the super planet busters of jerk overlords, to the universe-ending bombs of the ancients , there's always tool we use to solve our problems, and like it or not, that tool is usually considered a weapon. My favorite weapon?

The scythe. Duh!

Scythes are so underrated! No one ever uses them because they're either associated with death, or people realize they're just farming tools. So I'm counting down my top 5 scythes here today! Not necessarily from video games, but most are because, well... I mainly play video games. I'll be rating the scythes on how cool they are as a whole, not just how they look. Their powers are everything. Also, I'll only be choosing one scythe per franchise. If anyone likes any scythes not on this list, don't worry; this is a personal list, so maybe I simply don't like that scythe or don't know about it.

That being said, let's get into it!

Number 5:
La Conclusion (Monster Hunter 4: Ultimate)

Sorry, this was the largest picture I could find. But that's really not important, because DAMN this thing is awesome. It's only this low on the list because it's not technically a scythe, it's a switch axe. But... for god's sake, LOOK AT IT!! It's a scythe, dammit! Besides looking as cool as fuck, what with the gold and bright blue blending together perfectly, as well as the spikes and radiant red crystal in the middle, this thing is crazy powerful, and when I first got it, I was unstoppable.

Its base attack is 1296, and when adding on the additional Dragon attack power (390, by the way), you got a whopping 1686 attack power, making it one of, if not the the most powerful switch axe in Monster Hunter HISTORY. Potentially, of course. The dragon attack only adds if you're in sword mode, and might only work against monsters that are weak to dragon...

...which is everything, so you're basically a fucking god with this weapon. It does have it's downsides, however. You have to beat G-rank Shagaru Magala over and over again, which is NOT fun if you're all alone. But goddamn if that weapon isn't worth the effort. Truly a perfect example of Monster Hunter being one of the most rewarding games of all time.

Number 4:
Graceful Dahlia (Kingdom Hearts: Chain of Memories)

What? WHAT?! I like it, alright? Not every scythe has to have every spike and jewel in the universe to look cool! Marluxia's scythe, officially named the "Graceful Dahlia" thanks to 358/2 Days, makes a perfect example of this. It's sleek and simple, making it look more graceful than it really should be. And sometimes that's all you need, really. Of course, it's still blessed with spikes and edges that give it that touch of awesomeness, but the sleekness of it is where it's really at, to be honest with you.

For some weird reason, this scythe has the power to summon rose petals. After some research, I discovered those weren't, in fact, rose petals, but cherry blossoms. The best part about that? Cherry blossoms are associated with death, meaning this scythe is basically death. That's cool! Now, I don't know if it's because Marluxia is strong or if the scythe itself is really light, but you can swing this thing around like a a piece of paper, making what should be a heavy weapon into one of the fastest weapons in the game! I shit you not!

Oh, and thanks to 358/2 Day's multiplayer function, you're able to control Marluxia and, thus, his scythe. You have to work a bit to get the Zero Gear which gives you the scythe, but it's more than worth it when you find yourself enjoying swinging around the damn thing like a maniac!

It really is unfortunate this weapon is used by the biggest douchebag ever, but that's a story for another day, kiddies.

Number 3:
Crescent Rose (RWBY)

There's something alluring about a 15-year-old girl swinging around a giant scythe, but I guess that's the magic of anime, right? Seriously, Monty Oum, rest his soul, was a fucking genius. I couldn't make this shit up if I wanted to! Okay, okay, let's run down how awesome the crescent rose is. One, it can fold up and become easier to manage; two, it has a badass design with red and black, honestly one of the only times its WORKS (take notes, MLP fandom); and three, IT'S A FUCKING SNIPER RIFLE AS WELL!!! Scyfle? I dunno.

Yes indeed, the Crescent Rose is a gun as well, as are most things in the RWBY-verse. I shit you not. That sword? Yeah, it's a gun. That cane? Yeah, that's a gun too. That whip? Take a wild guess. Anyway, the scythe itself is huge but not heavy. I know that for a fact because it doesn't matter how strong you think you are, there is no way a 15-year-old anything could hold that and swing it around like that. Unless you had a semblance, of course! Ruby Rose herself is an important factor in the scythe; with her semblance of speed, she's able to combine her ability with her weapon and slice off heads faster than you can say: "Fuck it".

And hey! The best part? With the new RWBY: Grimm Eclipse game coming out, you'll get a chance to wield the Crescent Rose yourself! So, technically, this is still from a video game...

...dammit.

Number 2:
Scyther (Pokemon)

Does this count? Is it still liable? Fuck it, number 2 goes to Scyther.

But Kamek, you may be pondering to yourself, why would you put an entire Pokemon on this list? Have you lost your mind? Pokemon is gay! To which I would respond with: "Eat a dick, I love Pokemon", but I would mainly just say to take one look at Scyther and tell me how cool he is. To put it into a simple idea, Scyther is a LIVING SCYTHE BUG!! It's one thing to have a scythe, but to BE the scythe is a totally different story in itself.

Scyther is a powerhouse, boasting high attack and speed which could match a Crobat's power any day. Because of these utterly broken stats, it can be your False Swipe user for DAYS. For those not in the know, False Swipe is a move that cannot defeat a Pokemon and only brings it down to 1 HP, meaning in a monster collection game, this is vital to anyone with half a brain. Combined with Scyther's high attack speed, and, like mentioned before, you have the best False Swipe user in ANY Pokemon game period. This isn't where Scyther's usefulness ends either! It kicks ass using cutting attacks, most famously X-Scissor. The only downside? It evolves into Scizor.

Don't get me wrong, Scizor is a great Pokemon and has amazing attack power... at the cost of speed. For that reason alone, if you're going to be capturing more Pokemon, better to have a Scyther off hand just in case. Mainly because it's cool.

Number 1:
Thresh's Chains (League of Legends)

Say what you will about League of Legends, at least the devs can come up with some fantastic ideas and designs! Like, for instance, this! Thresh's Chains, or just Thresh's weapon because it has no official name but I'll call them whatever I damn-well please, are my favorite scythe type weapon in anything. So how does it top the scyfle and living scythe? Because it's basically the Grim Reaper's scythe... ONLY A THOUSAND TIMES COOLER!! For one, it's basically a scythe on a chain you can swing around like you own the damn place! Besides, they look really cool with their bony chains and green light emanating from the hook part. The chains connect to a lantern which Thresh uses to keep the souls of his victims. That's just badass.

Thresh's Chains have many abilities including binding a foe and stunning them, dealing massive damage; using the lantern part to shield allies; and sweep his scythe low to the ground to stun foes for longer periods of time, as well as knock them back and cause the "Slow" status. This may not sound like much at first, but when you consider the fact that stunning can leave one open to attack for several seconds, these abilities are DEADLY. This combined with Thresh's balanced stats make this weapon perfect for him and him alone.

Only sort of upsetting part about Thresh's Chains is that they can't absorb health from enemies like a leech, which would have been awesome, but oh well. That being said, they look awesome, play awesome, and have awesome powers, making them my favorite scythe in pop culture.

Mainly video games though.

And that's the list! Have any favorites or ones you liked but I missed? Leave any of your favs in the comments below. I'm looking forward to reading all of them. Now, for a Joshscorcher joke!

...get it? Because Josh plays League of Legends?

What about Harvester from Darksiders?

Hmm...Interesting

I'm a tad surprised Soul and Maka from Soul Eater didn't make it on this list, but hey, I was glad to see Ruby!

I thought that Soul Eater and Darksiders would've somehow made the list

3733129
Never played Darksiders. :applejackunsure:

3733131
I'm not quite as big an anime watcher as most other people. Hell, I don't really watch anime at all, besides RWBY of course. I basically have no knowledge of Soul Eater. :twilightsheepish:

3733133
Never seen Soul Eater, and never played Darksiders. :twilightsheepish: Like mentioned before, this is a personal list, so only things from media I know and are familiar with earn a spot on this list.

3733141 DROP EVERYTHING AND DO SO. THE SEQUEL IS ACTUALLY TAKING PLACE AT THE SAME TIME SO YOU DON'T NEED TO PLAY THE FIRST ONE TO UNDERSTAND WHAT'S GOING ON!

3733155
Okay, okay! :twilightoops:
What platform is it on?

3733158 PC, Xbox 360, PS3, Xbox One, PS4, Wii U. The second one is anyways.... just play the second one. Trust me.

..... Why did you leave out Magus's from Chrono Trigger?

3733160
Wii U, eh? Alright, I'll consider it. Might be a bit difficult, but I'll try.

3733161
While I like Magus as a scythe wielder, his scythe just looks really... boring. I dunno, maybe it's just me. :applejackunsure:

3733164 Key tip? DODGE. You have no blocking power. You just dodge.

3733129 Helluva good game

3733149 Well, Maka and Ruby are similar in a lot of ways. The main difference is that her scythe, Soul, is a human who can transform into a scythe and eats evil souls. Yeah, anime:rainbowlaugh: Also, like you, I seem to have a thing for girls with massive scythes. Might need to see someone about that:rainbowwild:

3733162
Because in my eyes, those aren't scythes. To me, a scythe is a long stick with an outward and curved down blade, much like the ones you saw above. It's just me, I guess though. :applejackunsure:

Edit: Besides, never played Dark Souls.

3733167
Believe me; after years of training in Monster Hunter to dodge with a switch axe, I'll be good.

3733170 Haven't you seen the one used by the Executioner in Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban?

3733168
Just looked up... Maka is 12 to 14. Well, now I know where Monty got all that inspiration bullshit creators need! :rainbowlaugh:

3733181
I saw that movie when I was, like, 9 or something. I can't remember jack about it.

I'm with the others about Soul Eater. My advice though, is read the Manga AND watch the anime, because they actually have different endings.

3733187 Alright. . .

3733189
AHH!! I don't have time to watch anime or read manga! :pinkiegasp: Seriously, I really don't like starting from the beginning of a series with, like, 1000 episodes. And don't lie, that's how most animes are.

I appreciate the effort, but I simply don't want to get myself into a series like that.

3733191
I won't lie... that's pretty badass. :rainbowkiss: Still, I prefer Ruby's scythe.

3733165

Yeah, but he twirled it a lot, honorable mention?

3733216
Yes. Perfectly viable reason. He twirled it a lot.

Perfect.

Sure, it can be on the honorable mentions list... :facehoof:

3733207 25 volumes, and 51 episodes.:rainbowhuh: Yeah, I forgot how long it is.:twilightsheepish:

3733226

:ajbemused:

Plus there's nostalgia, and I'm sure you could find one of Akira Toryama's sketches or something where the scythe is displayed in all it's awesomeness.

3733210 xD. Same... Wait til they show Qrow's

3733239
Bud, it was just a joke. :rainbowlaugh:

I love Chrono Trigger as much as the next guy. In fact, it's my favorite video game, period. And Magus is awesome in every way! But his scythe just wasn't interesting enough for me to be able to put it on this list.

3733229
51 episodes in each! Ahh... math... That would equal up to...

1275?!?!

No thanks. :rainbowlaugh:

3733249
With the direction the show's been going, it won't be too long now! :rainbowkiss:

3733256 No, the anime is 51 episodes, the Manga is 25 volumes. Still a lot though...:applejackunsure:

Scyther rules!

3733268
Well, okay, I suppose that's a little more manageable. MAYBE I'll have a look at it and see how it is. And hey, at least it's not as bad as One Piece. Or even worse...

Bleach. :rainbowlaugh:

3733272
He's awesome, isn't he? :rainbowkiss:

3733274 And One Piece is still going.:twilightoops:

The cool scythe from Abraham Lincoln vs. Zombies (it's near the end of the clip).

3733312
And Homestuck is still going. :ajbemused:

3733344
LOL, such a silly movie. :rainbowlaugh:

Grim Reaper's scythe

Funny you mention that.... I had a story in the works for a long time and it kinda involves that... and Spike.

Nice list involving probably one of the most unique weapons known.

3733255

Heresy! You are a console traitor and a Heretic! May the Nintengods have mercy upon your wicked soul!

3733404
Thank you, that means a lot!
