[Metroid Equis] Nathan and Starlight: A Closer Look · 8:28am Jan 5th, 2016
Hey everyone! Today/Tonight, while in between chapters, I'd like to shine a bit of light on two cool cats, namely, the Human Nathan and the Equine Starry. Even more specific, their dynamic and relationship. Let's get started.
As of Equis 2, the two are a couple, though many foresaw this since the first installment. So, how did it happen? How does this work? How has it worked? And up to this point, how does the squad dynamic change as a result of these two being an item?
Well, hilariously enough, neither of them really 'asked' the other out, per se. While there was nothing subtle about what was going to happen since Starry's near-death experience with a metroid, how it came to be was a bit on the unexpected side. As we know, bets were made about what WOULD happen, but not about who would move first. Turns out, as said above, no one did. About six months after Samus left for Norion, the two were on patrol together as a fire-team in the Everfree, shooting the breeze as they tended to. One thing lead to another, nudges lead to lesser personal space, and the two caught themselves making out heavily in an observation bunker, armor strewn about.
It was an enlightening experience for both of them, to say the least, but after resolving to not speak of that incident, the two arbitrarily decided that 'now' would be a good time to stop pretending.
Since this is more of a duo-dynamic analysis, I'll hold off on major personality trait descriptions until a later date. Continuing, the two decided to keep things on the down-low for about two weeks before coming clean to their squadmates, which, we know the outcome of. The important thing was that there was unanimous approval, though naturally, Jacob, Constance, and even Princess Luna remained skeptical about the ensuing squad dynamics that would come about with such a relationship.
As of currently (Section 6), those uncertainties proved unfounded.
While things were rocky at the start due to awkwardness, the numbers from wargames exercises proved beyond a reasonable doubt that there was really nothing to be concerned about, at least at the moment. While Starry herself is a bit eccentric and, worst-case scenario, high-octane, in battle, she's very 'territorial' and ruthless. With a specialization in offensive magic, her natural tendency to take point without being asked was admired and commended by all. This extended itself in certain ways, over Nathan. Starry became incredibly protective of him in 'combat,' and the two fighting together as a singular unit produced stellar results.
The same could be said about Nathan, to an extent. The emerald-eyed human did well to always check in on his 'marefriend' during firefights, and communication between them was near incessant. While many (arguably annoying) couples are known for finishing each other's sentences, Starry and Nathan were known for supplementing each other's actions.
Their dynamic does not just exist on the battlefield, of course. Arianna, Sydney, and especially Radiance would jokingly pester Nathan and Starry respectively about their 'personal' love lives, especially towards the six-month and one-year marks. As of now, no information has been ascertained as to how intimate the two are, though the details are likely unimportant in the grand scheme of things.
While the odd couple never fail to draw looks from human and pony alike, reception from the public has been generally warm. It was not as if their public relationship had no scrutiny nor nay-sayers, quite the contrary. But most of those opinions are kept to oneself at this point, considering the last time someone voiced their vehement disapproval. Four months into their relationship, Starry ended up violently pinning a human corporal up against a wall in the Vogl, threatening the male soldier with 'precision horn surgery with her horn' if he 'so much as breathed in Nathan's direction again.'
Quite a few humans and ponies witnessed the spectacle, and there were no problems thereon. To today (Section 6), their relationship, built upon a couple odd looks and some kindred-ness, still holds strong.
That does it for this bit of a closer look! Let me know what you think! Oh, and remember, if you have a request as to someone (or a certain topic, such as the relationship mentioned above) that can't be covered massively in depth in the story, feel free to comment below about what you'd like to see!
Until next time!
Ooh, nice!
A bit of a pity we didn't get their parents reactions. I'd have loved to see what sort of folks Nathan had, and their reactions to him bringing home a mare.
...and vice versa, for that matter.
3665702 I actually held off on that because of spoilers

3665704 Based on that comment and this line:
At least one parent is going to take issue with the couple and this opinion may well cause some level of strain on both the couple's relationship and their teamwork with their squad for at least a short period of time.
Flammen. I swear by all that is holy, I am going to punch the air, fly across the country, and hit you in the solar plexus.
You did it again.
3665797 While I would enjoy watching him be beaten, make sure to leave enough of him left to write. Also what did he do again?
3665805 Misspelled the Latin phrase "per se" as "per sey."
3665821 Damn, I didn't even notice that. The mistake is made so often I just ignore it usually... Hmm... Abuse of dead languages isn't that big of an issue... However seeing him beaten will still amuse me. Carry on.
