Spitfire's Son - Spoilers · 3:58pm Dec 5th, 2015
So I'm thinking about a new story featuring Spitfire's son Lance. General idea is that her father was an abusive alcoholic, causing Spitfire to move out by herself when she was 14, and formed underworld contacts to survive. Later her father died, and she resumed some contact with her widowed mom.
When Spitfire was in her late teens/ early twenties, she got pregnant (currently vague on the father), threatening her Wonderbolt aspirations. Abortion is highly illegal in Equestria, but she planned one through her underworld contacts, but made the 'mistake' of telling her mom. The mom, (a decent person), signed her up for an ultrasound at the hospital, and then since the government now knew Spitfire was pregnant, she couldn't get the abortion without getting caught.
When Lance was born, Spitfire essentially dropped him off at her moms and said, 'you're the one who wanted me to have him, you take care of him'; and flew off to become a Wonderbolt.
Lance is now about 15-16; no father figure, absent mother, but a fairly good grandmother; whose always told him that his mom loved him, but needed to be away because she was working/ earning money for them. Since Lance was old enough to know anything; his mom has been a Wonderbolt, and has been supporting her mom and son, so he tries to believe this.
Spitfire isn't entirely heartless towards her son. Let's say she doesn't love him but does truly care about him; however by default she can't help treating him the way she'd treat most other people in her life which is, 'prove to me you're worthy of my attention and I will work with you to make you great; otherwise I won't waste my valuable time.'
So far I see him as inwardly timid, outwardly cocky, always trying to prove himself in everything; and trying to balance his grandmother's more Christian philosophy with his mother's one of 'you have to be strong and take what you want.' Also, I'm about 80% sure he's an ace flier wanting to become a Wonderbolt.
This isn't a common family type, and the most logical thing to compare him to would probably be a son raised by his mother with a absent father paying child support and visiting once every couple months or so; but there's still a lot of room for development on him.
Does anyone else have any suggestions?
Socially awkward perhaps?
More prone to using her grandmother's teachings than his mother's?
More aware of the elder's needs?
Can easily talk with elders in comparison to those near his age?
Acts like a softy to kids when no one is looking?
Somewhat easy to succumb to peer pressure?
Just throwing ideas out there.

I will mention that at the time this story takes place, he's only about 15 and you have to be at least 18 to join the team, so this is more of a horizon goal for him and definitely not going to be in 'this' story. I'm thinking though that he wants to be in the team more to prove himself worthy of his mom's respect rather than actually wanting to be a performer.
For some of the background:
Dash joined the Wonderbolts with her head in the clouds and dreams she'd fall in love with one of the stallions. She had one disastrous date with Soarin, and after that got picked up by, “Fire Streak in a whirlwind romance that lasted about a week... and then Silver Lining when that didn't work... and then made the same mistake with Lightning Streak before realizing that that was NOT the life, romance, or reputation that she wanted.”
Wave Chill has been monogamous with Misty since before either of them were Wonderbolts, and the only other stallion on the team is Rapidfire; who tended to compete with the other stallion minus Wave Chill about how many fan-mares they could 'score' and felt a little peeved as being the only one Dash never dated. Dash was only in the team for 1 year, but a couple years after she left the guys were talking about her, and someone teased Rapidfire about his shortcoming.
Dash seems to have vanished off the face of the planet, (really she's in the Everfree Forest) but a few weeks after this the Wonderbolts got a gig in a neighboring country and were all invited to bring 2 friends or family to a several week long celebration. Rapidfire shows up with Dash's sister Scootaloo (whose about 16 at the time, Rapidfire is early twenties.)
Soarin shows up with Button Mash and his mom (who he's kind of dating on a serious basis/ it's complicated). Button Mash is Scootaloo's ex, really does like her and is not happy this and starts locking horns with Rapidfire. Lance sees all of this, and learns the background from his mom. He's not in love with Scootaloo and even isn't that attracted to her, but he thinks that if he can score a point Rapidfire can't get, that might put him on par with the stallions of the team, so he courts her. Scootaloo has 3 guys competing for her and loves it thinking she must be so georgous that 3 guys have fallen madly in love with her.
This is also going to be the story involving Fleetfoot wanting to quit and Spitfire water boarding her etc, though that comes at the very start.
P.S. This foreign country they're all in is called Pracylvania; and they're staying in the castle of a wealthy thesteral named Count Vladjula, also known as Vladj the Impaler. The festival they're celebrating is the solar eclipse, (two years after SOS, and about 6 weeks, 4 days 13 hours and 29 minutes after Forsaken.
What could POSSIBLY go wrong!

Probably not; honestly I have no idea yet.
