I prefer this version so very much. Instead of Twilight just singing a generic Disney Princess song, this version builds up the parallels between Sunset and Twilight and shows how both of them are feeling about how out of place they feel. While this is a subplot for Sunset that doesn't gel with the rest of the film, it serves to expand on the plot and characters and move them along better than the final version does, which is what all songs in a musical medium should do.

3434548 I like how since Rainbow Rocks she's changed Sunset's singing voice to be more distinct from Twilight. You have to give the lady props, she has to voice a major character and provide two different singing voices on top of that, and pulls it off.
That would have been AMAZING to see in full in the film.

But it's so obvious Sunset needs and wants to go back to Equestria! I'm going to ignore all evidence to the contrary and insist that Sunset belongs in Equestria and wants desperately to leave this boring human world behind! There's absolutely nothing there for her (this is the part where I willfully ignore all of the friends she's made and the effort she's made to redeem herself)! All of the magic and cool stuff is in Equestria, so that's where she belongs and where she wants to go! It's so obvious, Drake! Why can't you see what's right in front of you?

But in all seriousness, I think it could have fit if they adjusted a few other things from RR and this movie. It just needed a bit of build-up, but I like what it did.
I also couldn't help myself. The opportunity was perfect for the impersonation.

The tl;dr version is that he's a guy who's so obsessed with the idea that Sunset has to go back to Equestria that to say anything else is obviously a personal insult and that he's entitled to responses and answers from the show staff. He's also quite belligerent when making his points.

Apparently (this is heresay, heard it from a guy who doesn't specify a source) a major reason the song was changed is because the show staff didn't want to imply Sunset is homesick, and want to leave the idea of her returning to Equestria or remaining for good up in the air for now.

And I honestly think that while she might be a bit homesick, human world is now her home. I think she understands that, too. And maybe if they just tweak the song a teeny little bit, they can properly convey that feeling.
