While writing a current chapter, I came upon the idea that Thomas really needs to hang out with more dudes. He's bent towards females, so obviously the stallion would have to be made aware of this beforehand so there's no awkward flirting or anything intentionally sexual. However, this is unfamiliar territory for me as I've just realized I've never really written about male friendships before. Guys hang out and do things together in my stories, but they've never really felt like friends to me. So, when in doubt, I decided to do what's helped me out of my last few ruts, you guys.
So, any thoughts on a budding friendship between dudes that is in no way sexual except for what Moonlight'll probably imagine? I'm looking for suggestions on activities, personality types, and the like. Unfortunately, my own anti-social nature means I don't have much of a real life basis for such a friendship.

Just doing things together. Me and my roommate just go out for dinner sometimes, just to get out of the house and to avoid having to cook anything. We also head out to a local gaming store every so often to just play games. And we share games and other things we both enjoy on the internet.
There's also some friendly ribbing, like maybe the stallion poking at Thomas about how he's bent, such as pointing out another good looking stallion and commenting on how good looking said stallion is.
I'm a bi-sexual male, with my close heterosexual male friends I'll play flirt with them. The key thing with that is I make damn sure they know I'm not serious about it.
The key thing is just being there for each other and doing things you both enjoy together. There's a reason it's called "friend-shipping". A good friendship is just a platonic relationship.
Doesn't mean there can;t be "benefits". If, you know, you're into that sort of thing... .

Give the man A hobby or something. Something he likes to do in his alone time but has not had time to up till now. Jamming out on a guitar. Wood carving. Shadow puppets. Something at all.
If nothing else something like some music skills would open the way for some freinds outside the castle.

If I were to be honest. You may be over thinking this a bit.
Much like female friends you can do just about anything. Much like Talon is to Thomas you can have another training buddy. Maybe try expanding on how unicorns train like a special magic resistant weight they can us to train there telekinesis. Maybe special wing waits for pegasi and griffins. Maybe some more denser waits for earth ponies.
You can try expanding with maybe a colt coddler who is like Rarity and is one of fashion to help Thomas dress better. Which you could have a guard fill that role that has trained for combat but has a passion for fashion. Maybe if you want a little history he's only in the guards to keep up a line from his fathers.
Maybe a bookwarm like stallion much like Twilight who just reads for reading sake. So maybe this can be used to explain on how Royal herds were handled through the ages and maybe help expand on some of the other kinks Luna may have.
I personally love art and bunch of my friends like to see what I draw, compose, and write. Even some of them are writers themselves or do other kinds of art. Much like video editing and music making. So in context you could have Thomas explore some of his interests. Maybe he's looking for something new book wise so maybe he makes friend with the local library who happens to be a Stallion. Few chapters ladder you can have them have a talk about a book series that Thomas had gone through and make some earth comparison comment.
Even if you want to go down another route, you can do the whole Dungeons and Dragons route and have Shining Armor show up since he was into that stuff in school if you go by the comics that is. Maybe you can use that as an escape from the norm chapter and write something a little different. Maybe in the sense of the character he plays during a season. Hell maybe Celestia suggests some of her old male herd mates to help Thomas out of his shell. Maybe a male touch to a female dominate idealism. I mean he's gotten most of his advice from females, so having one from a male side would help balance it out.
Just spitballing ideas that you may like and help you with your issue. I hope I haven't gotten overboard with my answer.

3415602 That last paragraph is pretty much the point of what I'm going for. He's surrounded by females all the time that some male bonding will balance things out. I like your other ideas though.

3416016 Thank you, I'm glad you enjoyed my ideas. I'm one of those people that love little details like that or context in stories. I feel like they help flush out the world of the narrative. That and I've had a lot of detailed thoughts about an anthro Equestria that would seem right in my head at least.
