Having donated to that brony who died in a hit-and-run (whose family used a go fund me campaign to pay expenses), I fail to see any humor in this. I don't know who the target is but people suffering from actual tragedy make an easy target I guess.

Well, he certainly did a decent job of pretending to have a tragedy.
Asking for donations to cover expenses for an injured pet isn't petty. Unlike expenses for human beings, with pets there is no minimum standard of care: either you have enough money, or your pet dies.
Pets are like family members to a lot of people, and making a request like this is humiliating, so trying to be funny or silly about it isn't uncommon. I seriously didn't know if this was a real request when I first saw it, especially since you were sending people there from your blog.
I'm fine with dark humor, and I'm not an SJW by any measure... but I didn't see the humor in this. I wanted to help, which I suppose makes me one of the butts of the joke.
