1980s Theme Music 4: the one where Big Mac fights a big Russian dude! · 3:14am Jun 25th, 2015
So, um, it turns out I haven't done one of these in like a year and a half. (Where does the time go?) So for those of you with no idea what this is all about -- which is probably almost everybody reading this -- here are the previous entries in this series:
- In which music of another decade is assigned to FIM characters as theme songs...
- 1980s Theme Music 2: Electric Boogaloo!
- 1980s Theme Music 3: The Search for Rock
Octavia
If you're anything like me, one of the main things you associate with the city of Vienna is classical music. As a bonus, this song includes some very nice strings (and not by coincidence).
Vienna - Ultravox
Fleur de Lis
I refuse to spell her name in the trademarked fashion. As for the song choice, my reasons should be obvious.
(Warning: the video contains some naughty imagery.)
She's A Beauty - the Tubes
Spike
If you take the title literally, it could be about Spike's admiration for Twi, his surrogate big sister. But if you listen to the lyrics, you know it's all about having a massive (and possibly hopeless) crush on a girl, so this was chosen to reflect his feelings for Rarity.
Every Little Thing She Does Is Magic - the Police
Bon Bon
Honestly, I wouldn't have known what to do with Bon Bon prior to "Slice of Life". When my eyes fell on this title a little while ago, though, it was pretty clear that this was her song. (Well, all right, I suppose "I Want Candy" by Bow Wow Wow was always on the table, if you want to get technical about it...)
Private Eyes - Hall and Oates
Cheese Sandwich
Cheese Sandwich is not Alfred Matthew Yankovic... but I think there's a lot of "Weird Al" in Cheese besides just the voice. Given the title, and the fact that the tune is meant to kick off good times, I think Cheese would appreciate this song. (The UHF soundtrack came out in the latter half of 1989, so this squeaks in just under the wire, time-wise.)
Fun Zone - "Weird Al" Yankovic
Sunset Shimmer
The lyrics are about getting out of a bad relationship, but it's not much of a stretch to interpret them as Sunset's feelings about leaving Celestia's training, leaving Canterlot, and even leaving the world she knew. (The runner-up song choice, inspired by Sunset's difficulties in Rainbow Rocks, is "Naughty Girls Need Love Too" by Samantha Fox.)
Harden My Heart - Quarterflash
Sweetie Belle
See, sugar is sweet, and she has "sweet" in her name, and... oh, all right, I got nothin'. I had a really difficult time coming up with a selection for Sweetie Belle, and I really like this song. Shut up.
Lips Like Sugar - Echo and the Bunnymen
Will there be another sequel? Who the hell knows? Not me, that's for sure...
You know, Weird Al's "Polka Party!" came out in 1986.

My girl likes to party all the time...

I didn't exactly have medleys in mind, but I s'pose that would do in a pinch...

Still thinking about Sweetie Belle, but the best that's come to mind so far is Don't Worry, Be Happy...

We're still missing Silver Spoon, aren't we?

Huh. How about a tv theme song from the 80's?

It qualifies on a technicality, but I'll allow it.
These are great, and I'm particularly pleased by Fleur de Lys' selection. On the other hand, wouldn't "Lips Like Sugar" work for Sugar Belle?
I keep thinking Sweetie Belle needs some song covered by Helen Kane, but I'm always thinking of the wrong decade.

At least I'm not the only one with songs from totally the wrong year coming to mind for Sweetie Belle...

Hells...
(Like I said, Sweetie Belle has been a really difficult one for me.)
3180214
Listening to "How Do You Solve A Problem Like Maria" a few times, it's perfect in almost all the lyrics for Sweetie Belle, only it's from the 60's. There is Faith No More's "We Care A Lot", but aside from the main lyrics, I'm not sure it's a good fit.

Probably a bad choice, given how scathingly sarcastic that song is...

Yeah, I'd better just pretend the Sound of Music was in the eighties.
If Sweetie Belle was a nun, it'd be spot on.

Scootaloo and/or the CMC: Dare

Scootaloo already has "Learning to Fly" by Pink Floyd.

Definately the CMC, then:
