    Droppin' By

Hello, I was in the neighborhood and had just realized that my last blog post was a bit of a downer, given that it was around the time of my Grandma's passing and funeral. I think I oughta leave you folks with something a bit more upbeat or at least something neutral.

    And Now, A Newsletter

Huh, back in July I said I oughta talk more around here. It's now the day after Christmas and I have not, in fact, talked more around here.

So, I'll give you the rundown on what I've been up to since then. Warning, it gets a little long in talking about last summer's vacation and about a new fixation I have.

Top Five Favorite Brother Bothers Moments · 3:38am Mar 19th, 2015

So, we had a countdown for my personal faves of The Rock Farmer's Daughters, now let's have one for Brother Bothers. Since it's shorter, I'll only do five.

#5: Tomato Plays With Winona
Cheese gave her a grin. "Come on, Applejack! It's a great ide--OW!"

He rubbed the back of his head, and looked down on the ground to see what hit him. It was a stick. He snorted in annoyance before a brown and white dog retrieved it, and then ran back to drop it at the hooves of Tomato, who was looking away, biting his lip. Cheese zoomed forward to his face in a millisecond.

"What's with you and throwing sticks at me?"

Tomato closed his eyes. "This is only the second time, and it's an accident."

If any of you thought that he was lying, nope, he wasn't at all. He really was playing with the dog. It's a scene that I planned for a long time, where a bored Tomato decides to pass the time playing fetch with that friendly dog that greeted him--I did establish him as a dog person (er, pony?). It's a clue that he's not completely the big, stuffy, stick-in-the-mud that he makes himself out to be.

It's also another excuse for Cheese to get mad at him again. Ah, gotta love how he manages to tick off a party pony multiple times in one day...

#4: The Hot Air Balloon

Cheese's eyes were just as wide. He started to pace around the basket, grinding his teeth. "Oh, Stilton, did he fall off? I thought he outgrew falling off stuff! Ugh, it's that trip to the bridge all over again! I swear, he keeps on almost killing himself, that little dummy!"

"Uh, little dummy?" Spike asked.

"Cheesy, that's not nice," Pinkie said.

"It's what I call him when--ouch!" Cheese rubbed the back of his head. He looked down, and there laid a stick on the floor of the basket. He stared at it for a moment before he looked at the edge of the basket behind him, and then he and and the other two looked over it. Sure enough, Tomato was dangling from the balloon, his glasses in his mouth and with an expression of heavy annoyance.

You know, I had a little trouble writing the chapter. The original idea was the balloon crashing, but I ended up writing something stupid about malicious commando squirrels jumping on and chewing on the balloon, which made me realize that it was stupid and rewrite the entire thing. Tomato just dangles from the balloon and gets scraped by trees.

The more I read the chapter though, the more I'm happy with how Spike turned out in the chapter. He's not the butt of a joke, hooray!

Also, you gotta love that old big brother instinct briefly activating in Cheese when Tomato was missing. Look at how concerned he is...

#3: Cheese Tells Pinkie About His and Tomato's History

Pinkie's eyes widened. "So... you had little mini parties?"

"I guess you could say that. But, I really had no idea at the time that I was going to grow up to be a party pony. I just thought my brother would be the only pony who'd appreciate my fun side and I'd grow up to be... boring." Cheese cleared his throat. "Anyway, we explored the streets of Manehattan, where he'd almost get killed by speeding carriages, nearly falling off the ferry or falling off the bridge, being chased by a pack of dogs--what's funny about that last one is that he didn't have a fear of dogs after that; they ended up as his favorite animal for whatever reason. Still, I had to save him from whatever mishap he got himself into.

"Anyway, we'd also munch on pizza together, shun sauerkraut together, played cowspies together, have snowball fights in the park, and a bunch of other stuff. And man, you should have seen him go! He had a load of energy, and he'd be trying to chat to strangers... but he always scared them off. I do admit, I had found him a little annoying at times, but I wouldn't have traded him for the world."

Personally, I like Cheese explaining his past here better than when he did in The Rock Farmer's Daughters. This scene is rife with stronger emotions, with Cheese switching from happy to angry to sad as he explains his side of the story and his confusion over why Tomato had damped down his personality and how much he misses the good old days. Like, mixed-emotion Cheese is best Cheese, am I right?

Plus, I love how the ending of that scene implies incoming disaster. :rainbowlaugh:

#2: Tomato Sadly Ponders the Situation
He looked up at a banner he came across, which said:

The Fall Friendship Festival! Celebrating the bonds of not only friends, but also those of sisterhood and brotherhood!

He mockingly laughed at it. "Wonderful, just wonderful. It's a shame that my own brother hates me."

This scene, half where he's alone and half spent with Pinkie Pie, gives us more insight on Tomato's side of the story. He absolutely knows that he has changed from his colt self, he knows he's a party pooper, he knows that he did something to drive away Cheese--but he doesn't exactly understand just why Cheese had been shutting him out prior to the accordion incident or why he decided to just stop caring and hold a grudge.

It was bad enough that Tomato had to resort to being mean to drive him away in order to protect himself (though it wasn't the best course of action), and to believe that he's unable to apologize and unworthy of forgiveness. And like Cheese, he terribly misses the bond they had. They were just stuck in a destructive loop.

And the ending of this points to the same incoming disaster as #3. :derpytongue2:

And, now... the moment you've all been waiting for...

#1: The Polka Quarrel

Cheese leapt off the ball, and put his accordion down, bearing the same expression.

"There is also the fact that you're not 'Tommy' anymore!
How did that colt grow up to be such a bore?"

Cheese pushed Tomato, and the latter gnashed his teeth and pushed back.

"How did such a shut-in grow up to be a clown
With the most annoying voice around?!"

Of course it's this scene. Well, why not, it was the climax that I planned for months! I had always intended for them to have a singing argument, which is the main reason why Tomato had been given a good singing voice (which is impossible to convey in text unfortunately). Just imagine how glorious this scene would have been if it was animated! Well, it wouldn't measure up to the Goof Off, but still!

So, this is just where they both explode. They've had a bad day, they have reached their boiling points, they have had absolutely enough of everything going on and how they believe the other had wronged them. So, while it does start out pseudo-cheerful, it just devolves into chaotic ire that ends in a broken stage, a broken Pinkie, and a broken foreleg.

Also, if any of you think Tomato just forcing a smile would have prevented the disaster; it wouldn't have. Cheese would have seen right through it, and forced himself even more and accidentally let his irritation show. Yeah, Tommy was in a darned-if-you-do, darned-if-you-don't situation, basically.

Also, it was just fun making Tommy sing, having them call each other names, Pinkie coming to the horrible realization that they're fighting again and trying to stop them, and showing Cheese just so terrifyingly angry. Beware of angry party ponies, folks--remember Pinkie?

Yeah, it was supposed to be a very intense chapter, and judging by the comments, I have succeeded.

And... well, until Brotherly Bonding Time is finished (which won't be for a while), I won't be doing any more Top 5 or 10 favorite moments for the time being. In the meantime, I've got to write in my current fanfic some more... and maybe I should put out another one-shot.

See ya later, dudes! :pinkiehappy:

I liked the polka quarrel too. Never make a party pony angry you wont like them when they are angry. Of course i loved the make up scene at the train station that part made me tear up.
