    Black Feather Project Update

The last month has been pretty crazy. My dog got a massive bladder infection and I had to spend $2000 on vet bills to get an ultrasound and all the nonsense that goes with that, all to get a prescription for $30 worth of medicine to fix the situation. Been kinda busy with that as well as upcoming holiday planning, etc.

    One more rewritten chapter

    Hey everyone.

Well, that last chapter took 3 weeks of hard work, mostly design, but nobody has commented on it so I can't tell how anyone feels about the story so far. I'm hoping people can share their thoughts because it helps me to know how the story is being received.

    More new characters

I've recently finished a scene where Dinky gets to know one of the platoon members. I find Dinky's POV to be fascinating to write, though all the Dinky POV scenes will be brand new content (for you old fans out there) because Dinky wasn't previously written into this part of the story. She's a fun character to see the world through. Innocent and naïve, happily venturing into things that

    Sergeant A.Pone

Alright, it's time for a shift of tone.

I had a pretty long chat with Duvet yesterday, and we decided that chapter eleven really does need a thorough rework from the 2018 version. This is the last of what I'd call my "weak writing". Chapters 12-21 are pretty much perfect, so if I can fix 11, this is going to mean great things for the story.

Well, that was interesting. · 2:28pm Jan 13th, 2015

So, the story is public now. And it has weathered the requisite wave of drive-by haters, who I can guarantee did not read the chapter. It's worth noting that these people did not leave criticisms of the story content itself in the comments, but seemed to simply dislike the premise—as if such a premise could not be made into a good story.

This has been an interesting experience, I'll say that much. What it proves is that in a fandom where supposedly "Friendship is Magic" espousing "Love and Tolerance", we've got just as many (perhaps more) immature people here as anywhere else on the internet.

That's okay though. It's not like I'm trying to get famous. I'm more than twice the age of the average fimfiction reader, and I have a different perspective than they do. I just want all the people who would like the story to actually be able to enjoy it. And that meant promoting the story heavily upon launch, even if it did stick a bee in the undies of a few kids who would rather read a badly written clopfic than a well written war adventure.

I'm adaptable though. It only requires a change of perspective. What perspective might that be which was incorrect? The one which presumes that dislikes matter at all.

So this is a time to celebrate the addition of a lot of new, and loving fans for which it is my duty to provide the most entertaining story as possible as we move forward over the next year or so, making this story awesome!

That's what is important here. My devotion to the fans. Those of you who have cast your vote, saying that you'd like to read a story like this. You are who I am writing this story for. The challenge is to locate you all. Apparently this is not easily done by publishing in the midst of two thousand people online simultaneously. That's okay. You're out there. Maybe some of you know others who are just like yourselves.

So, here's to you!

That's not bad for less than fourteen hours of exposure! It's humbling to create a story that many new people have expressed interest in. Now, it's just up to me to make the story as good as it can be.

Well, last I saw your story had a positive like/dislike ratio, so congrats.

2719939 Yes. And I'm thankful, trust me.

My point here is that I need to adopt the attitude that the dislikes do not matter. I am not creating the story for them. I'm creating it for people who would appreciate it.

In order to stay motivated to create a good work of art, any artist needs to actively ignore the fact that so many people will not like what is being created.

And so the story begins! Now let's see what the future holds :D

That's the spirit!!

It's good that you're looking at the positives! And the story is doing solid, trust me.

I'd argue that the ratio of likes/dislikes matters, but not just yet. Give it a bit, probably until Chapter 3 or 4 when the people who'd like/dislike on a first pass have already seen it and it's gotten sufficient exposure. After that point start paying attention to how many likes/dislikes you get per chapter. Right now I'd still say it's settling as people get on and notice it. It takes about a week or so for people to check in on FiMfiction.

I had a similar experience when i revealed Pegasus Zebra form for my Terminator like oc Crystal Eclair.

2720108 I hope that's better in context, because this sounds silly.

2719940 People have this insane vendetta against Nyx and Fallout: Equestria, more so against FoE. So good decision in not using Fallout Equestria in the title, since you could avoid it. A good portion of the dislikes probably come from Nyx being in the title, though.

Hmmm...I'm actually wondering if I'll enjoy this story.

I've read pretty much most of Pen Strokes stories and I've read and enjoyed some fallout Equestria stories. It should be interesting to see how I react to your story.

But maybe tomorrow after I have a bit of rest and I get a few things done.

2720920 Crystal is an OC for a Fallout Equestris side fic I'm doing involving a bio-mechanical zebra that was created to be a better spy but the project behind it was limited to just zebras.

2721633 No! Blasphemy! Such things did not exist in Fo:E! <Troll troll troll> <Grumble grumble grumble>

lol just kidding. Sounds awesome! Just gives another example of how well creativity works within the Fo:E setting. :pinkiehappy:

Guy, I need more of this story. A+

You know, I'm sitting here trying to figure out how to reword these paragraphs of exposition (without sounding like boring summary text) about a third of the way through chapter two, mentally banging my head on the keyboard and thinking about how I'm not even sure how to gauge reader interest at this stage...

And then I see a comment like this, and it just... it's very encouraging. Thanks!

Good work!
I'm glad to see you're taking the criticisms in your stride and hope you continue
Must say poor Nyx is in for quite a ride, considering zebras views on Luna, god knows what they'll think of her!
Will watch with interest!

2721899
Yeah, I'm willing to say that you have definitely called that one in advance. Nyx is no stranger to others freaking out about her appearance and assuming the worst, but the zebras have taken it to a whole new level.
