Vindication: Enterplay Edition · 2:02pm Nov 21st, 2014

I was browsing Derpibooru this morning when I came across something interesting. If you're uninterested in card games and/or me wallowing in my own ego, feel free to ignore this post.

Okay, let's review:

Now, aside from best pony continuing to be She Who Must Not Be Named In Official Merchandise, what can we gather from this?

• Bouncing (returning cards from play to their owner's hand.)
• Asymmetrical Rule of Law.
• Abilities that trigger on playing cards.

Conclusion: I was right. She is white-blue. A bit more green than I was expecting, but still. :pinkiehappy:

I would put her on a red Magic card. Something like....

Cross-Eyed Mailmare - R

Creature - Pegasus Warrior

Flying

When Cross-Eyed Mailmare enters the battlefield, it deals 1 damage to target creature chosen at random.

Looks good to me, though a mailmare seems more like a Scout than a Warrior. I know I have a red effect lined up for her come "The Last Roundup."

2608543 I have a big problem when it comes to designing a hypothetical Magic expansion set in Equestria. I want all ponies to have a race and class in their creature type, to distinguish them from the "animal" versions in most expansions. But I want a class other than the ones normally seen in expansions (Soldier, Warrior, Scout, Cleric, Druid, Rogue, Assassin, Archer, etc.) They abandoned the Townsfolk creature type, which would be ideal, and the only use of the Citizen creature type in a Modern-legal set is the throwaway references on Sarpadian Empires, Vol. VII and Icatian Crier.

It's still legit, though. I've seriously considered going back and making all the single-type pony cards Citizens.

I was thinking at one point, since I've kinda dropped my version of the Magic cards, as Fan's are far more numerous and superior, of translating the Enterplay CCG into Magic Cards. The interesting part would be (if I ever did this) trying to see if I could get most of one game's colours to match up with the colours of the other, while trying to not limit myself by my preconceived notions of what the pony's MtG colours should be.

Also, Fan, we're wondering where you've been for the Loops. Haven't seen you there in ages.

:fluttershysad: I didn't mean to shame you away from making Magic cards.

In any case, you certainly have your work cut out for you. The games function on different inherent philosophies.

Magic is a fundamentally destructive game. All the usual methods of victory involve tearing down someone else. Bring a life total down to zero. Remove all cards from a library. Even poison counters generally require harming the opponent. There are constructive alternate win conditions, the most dramatic of which is Helix Pinnacle, but they are the exception rather than the rule.

The MLP CCG is a fundamentally constructive game. The key to winning isn't bringing down your opponent's score, but increasing your own. As you do so, the capabilities of both players increase.

That brings me to the next issue, the resource system. Basically, the mana pool in the pony game never empties and devotion is just as important as the finite resources. In terms of resource systems, one of the most pony-like cards in Magic is Feast of Blood.

And then there are the mechanics. Magic hasn't subdivded the battlefield since the days of Raging River. In the pony game, that subdivision is an essential part of the game, defining which friends and mane characters are home or at a given problem. Furthermore, players basically have activated abilities they can employ with resource tokens, dramatically altering the options available.

I'm not saying converting between the two games is impossible. I'm just saying it's going to be one heck of a challenge.

Bubbly Mare is closer to Ethersworn Canonist than Rule of Law. Still a white effect, though.

Also, IIRC Equestrian Mailmare was a promo card as well. :rainbowkiss:

I've been pretty much out of the Pony CCG loop after all of the Mane Six were released. I bought the precons for all the Mane Six and a box of the first set, then put together six decks, and haven't really touched the game since.

My Rarity deck (Generosity/Laughter) was definitely my strongest one, effectively a cutthroat UB control deck. I think my Fluttershy deck was my most fun, though: mono-Kindness. I was completely incapable of solving my own problems. So, my problem deck was full of 1-point starter problems, and I would drop Nightmare Moon or Ahuizotl on my problem deck, and proceed to swarm my opponent's problem deck with cute, fluffy critters. And Celestia.
