Bonjour, mes amis!
First, an aside: While I'm kind of miffed that total story views were removed from the user page widget (especially since I was about to surpass my goal of getting 4500 views by the end of the year—with 2.5 months to spare!), overall I'm in favor of knighty's recent site redesign. The extra statistical rankings are what really caught my eye: I was surprised to see that MKE is already one of the 1,000 longest fics on the site, and it was both exhilarating and humbling to see that it was also just inside the top 25K of top-rated fics. It's a long way from the bottom, but it ain't too close to the top either.
But this isn't a site post about UI makeovers. This is a post about the future! Specifically, this is a post about the fate of MKE, and some random musings about future story ideas.
MKE: Has this story finally jumped the shark? 'Cause that's the vibe I'm getting from it right now... (Especially since trimming the field to a single pony sucked all of the remaining drama out of the tale.)
Nevertheless, we've reached the top of the tournament pyramid, and are heading for an exciting green-white-checkered finish! My current vision for the ending looks like this:
—Chapter 22: A Kombat Doubleheader!
—Battle 1: Rainbow Dash vs. Queen Chrysalis
—Battle 2 (if when Dash wins): Rainbow Dash vs. Shing Tsung
—Chapter 23: Whoever's left after Chapter 22 (Dash? Celestia? Fran?) vs. Shao Kahn
The next few months are shaping up to be pretty busy, but I'm still hoping to wrap things up by MKE's 3rd birthday. I've got a few remaining twists up my sleeve for the final battles, so stay tuned!
Other Stories: I've sworn to finish MKE before starting any other projects, but that just means a bunch of story ideas have started backing up in my head, so I figure I should write them down before I forget them. Current ideas include:
—Who Am I? (a sad one-shot involving Pinkie Pie, and probably the most-developed idea thus far.)
—Friendship Is Magic: Surveying The Impact of Harmony and Companionship in an Equine Society (a comedic one-shot that retells the major adventures of the first four seasons in the form of a scientific journal paper! ...Hey, I didn't say these were good ideas.)
—Too Old To Dream (a SOL longform tale featuring three OCs and how they cope with the discrepancy between what they want to do and what they're actually good at doing.)
—Unnamed Pokemon Crossover (another presumably-longer fic that could go in a couple of different directions: A Team Rocket kidnapping operation? A Pokemon runaway?)
—Unnamed Blossomforth Story (because I'm part of the 'Blossomforth Is Best Pony' group, and all I've used her for so far is a cameo in PonyConned. This must change! Believe it or not, I've even kicked around the idea of writing a PonyFall-styled story starring her.)
I might write them all. I might throw them all away. (I'm also open to suggestions, and after my showing in the Outside Insight contest—PresentPerfect recommended my story, which was a better prize than the actual things I could have won—I may try my hand at a few other contest prompts.) The possibilities are endless!
