Thousands of years after the seas rose up (literally) and destroyed civilization as we know it, a pair of evolved sea species, the Inklings and the Octarians, found themselves locked in conflict over a land mass that was rapidly shrinking.
Facing the prospect of a never-ending stalemate, the Inkling High Council authorized "Operation Expansion," a covert military program in which small teams of Inklings were deployed across the world to look for other lands that the Inklings could claim as their own.
One such team, led by their intrepid splatoon leader Danielle, struck gold in the form of a large island perfect for colonization. Upon investigation, however, the team discovered that the land was inhabited by a group of four-legged creatures with some crazy ideas about friendship...

I was really surprised when I went looking for other Splatoon crossovers. This game is the runaway hit of the summer, my pony-flavored Miiverse posts were getting some Yeahs, and EQD even used a pony/Inkling image as a post header...yet Splattered Horizons was the only Splatoon story I could find on FimFiction.
Hopefully there will be more Splatoon/MLP stories coming soon!

This site is in dire need of more Splatoon crossovers. That said, I don't know if any could come up with a better premise than this one, so maybe people are hesitant to try.
As for this story, the spelling and grammar is pretty darn good; only a handful of errors that I could spot in that department. The writing is rather basic and the narrative is lacking in meat, but I can easily follow what's happening, which is most important. There's also some POV issues with the story, and that's really the only legit problem I can find with it. Ask and I'll go into specifics on that issue.
I shall Track this and give it a Like. Can't wait to read more.

I would say Tommy's got a basic Splatterscope, although he's probably not skilled enough to use it properly. He's likely rocking the Retro Specs as well, but I never thought beyond "he wears glasses" when I created the character.
I left Danielle without any visible headgear, so the Fake Contacts (and possibly the Squid Hair Clip) are the closest options.
Truthfully, I never mentioned shoes because I thought they would make the initial character descriptions too wordy.
6274720 Brianna strikes me as the kind of character who will reach Level 50 by the start of the next Splatfest. (She's basically the Rainbow Dash of Inklings.) As for Tommy...let's just say levels measure experience, but not necessarily skill.

6343538 Well, I had this idea that ink makes magic go screwy, making spells useless and causing pegasi to be unable to control their flight. Besides, I'm pretty sure bashing someone with a giant freakin' paint roller would do something. And ink is fired pretty high-velocity, I'm sure you could do something with it.

Headcanon about some game mechanics in Splatoon and a wall of text incoming
I don't think that inkling are made of ink and that is why they die if they fall into water. I think that the inklings simply hate getting wet and here's why: it's cold, it causes their clothes to get wet and stick to their skin, and it makes their ink ABSOLUTELY USELESS in turf wars! But they can live through a rainstorm if they ditch their ink tanks. Ink tanks have a small packet of ink near the top that's the opposite color of whatever color ink that the inkling is using at the time. Directly above that is a sensor that will cause the packet to detonate directly into the wearer if it gets wet enough. The inkling is injected with a "lethal" dose of ink and is splated within seconds. It saves time waiting to dry off and washing away ink that they are standing on and besides, inklings respawn when killed
