After decades of political tension, the Verdant Song was a beacon of hope for those who believed that a griffon-pony alliance was possible. Years of research, engineering, and careful diplomacy crafted a colony ship unlike any other.
But a catastrophic accident left them adrift in an alien solar system. With starvation inevitable, the natural order of species prevailed. A group of griffons hunted down the pony survivors, capturing and consuming them.
Three exceptions worked as allies to repair the shattered engines.
That work is done. Now those three must survive the voyage home, pursued through the ship by a band of merciless hunters who were robbed of their way of life.
If they make it home, they bring a ship full of irrefutable proof that griffons are carnivores and ponies are prey. Some miracle of diplomacy could salvage the feeble shards of political unity, but the only one left willing to try is a griffon who might be just as much of an emotionless sociopath as the hunters.
