Status and Delays
Yikes, it's been four months since the last chapter of Sharing the Night! I've said in several places that Chapter 10 is complicated, and that it's been giving me a lot of trouble, but not everyone follows me and I don't tag my story on all my blog posts like some people, so I figured I'd just throw this out there and let people know I'm still alive and still working on Sharing the Night.
As of this moment, Chapter 10 is about 5,000 words, which for me means it's about 50% done. That's better than it sounds; it means I have a good solid base to work with. The first half is always the hardest, for me.
Minor Changes Incoming
Anyway, part of this trouble is trying to fit the new direction I'm taking the cosmology of Sharing the Night in. The fact that all alicorns were originally Windegos has been extremely difficult to shoehorn into the meticulously developed system presented in previous chapters.
Celestia and Luna, of course, are pretty much canonically shown to be windegos, with it being the raw friendship-magic of the three tribes that turned them into the 'alicorns' they are today (creating the elements of harmony in the process). Somehow I missed this obvious fact on first watch, though, which is how I find myself in this situation. Still, they're easy to work in, relatively speaking.
Twilight, on the other hand, has been nothing but trouble with this change. In particular, the combined reveals that Twilight's mother is the fourth alicorn, that Twilight is only half alicorn and that the villain of the story is her stillborn brother who she's going to have to kill in order to become a full-blown alicorn for the sake of her immortal love is just so completely jarring in combination with the rest of the story, that I'm afraid it might be a lost cause.
So I'm not going to bother. I'll just go back and change the original chapters to match this new vision sometime in the future. I know this sounds bad, but I'm determined to do it right. I won't fall into the trap that so many others have. Rewrites kill projects—it's a fact—so I refuse to start on them until after I've finished the rest of Sharing the Night. There might be a slight hitch when Twilight and Luna start mentioning their previous BDSM history as a result of the new timeline, but I'm probably just being overly critical of myself. I'm sure nobody will notice a thing.
The upshot of this is I won't have to change the story's rating to mature until after the rewrites go through, as Luna is strictly in favor of abstinence during pregnancy. Whatever happens between Celestia and Twilight Velvet will stay behind closed doors, too, seeing as the story isn't about them. (Spin off? Yes/no?)
Regardless, I'm sure everything will be just fine.

I don't think there's any room for misunderstanding in the above, but just in case anyone is confused about what exactly is going to happen with Sharing the Night, you may consult the following chart, which should help by boiling the changes down to their simplest form. Some details may have been lost in translation, but I spent like, five minutes putting it together, so I'm going to post it.

Everyone is too ironically self-aware.
My brain kept yelling "SPOILER ALERT! SPOILER ALERT!" all the way through that blog until the comments so I was completely fooled by it. Not to mention I was sitting here trying to work through my head about the windigo -> alicorn bit. Gotta be honest, it was a bit intriguing.
I am entirely in favor of all such changes.

I'm surprised I'm the first to jump at the "during pregnancy" bit. One or both of Luna and Twilight are pregnant. Which is it? Who's the father? (Probably "Twilight is pregnant with Luna's foal", but one never knows.)

Windingo to alicorn is an intresting theory... that could make for an intresting story. And i cant wait for the next chapter. I just binge read the whole story in two days. And i want more.
