Reports of my death have been greatly exaggerated

    Hello all,

Just got an email from Brony Soprano concerning my health (given that my last blog was about me getting Covid, I understand that some might be a bit jittery). Rest assured, I overcame Covid and am in good health lately (probably better health because I've started working out some).

And this is why I play Tzeentch

Well, after nearly two years of dodging and playing it safe, I've finally been "blessed" by Grandfather Nurgle's plague. I tested positive for Covid this afternoon.

    Big news!

I'm gonna be an uncle come July!

Rest assured the kid will be raised as a proper servant of the Emperor if I have anything to say about it.

Merry Christmas to you all :pinkiehappy:

I was working on the scene where Sinestro shows up, and I hit a snag:
I haven't decided just what he looks like.
My original plan was to make him a pony (specifically an Earth Pony. The thing will be that Korugar is populated solely by Earth Ponies), however I was wondering if I should have his canon appearance instead. On one hand it makes him more alien to Shining, but on the other hand I'm turning other humanoids into non-humans (Kryptonians, Czarnians, Martians, you name it I've changed it), so having him being a humanoid might seem out of place.
What are your thoughts?

Well, in the favor of making him humanoid, it can be entirely possible that humanoid creatures exist in this universe, since the universe is MASSIVE, and therefore would have billions of lifeforms and body types. (be funny that you have actual humans in the Green Lantern corps too, but never explicitly state which Lantern it is:raritywink:)

In favor of making him equine, it does keep with the 'main body type being equine' thing, and make the universe feel like it's following some sort of internal logic.

In this case, either way is good, and it's really just a case of how you personally feel about it.

I think it would be interesting to have Sinestro keep canon design for the sake of variety and have Shining react to how alien Sinestro appears to him, and maybe have Shining Armor contemplate on how vast and diverse this new part of the universe that he's been thrust into is.

Well the Lantern Corpse always have had a very diverse species collective (one of them is a freaking sapient small pox virus, and then there's Mogo). There is no reason for him to be an equine if you don't want him to be.

Flip a coin.
Heads = Humanoid
Tales = Equinoid

Why not both? Centaurs are magical creatures and have been in MLP in the past.
That being said, I can see it working out with both pony-ish and humanoid forms.

-Also, Martians? You've already got an idea for J'onn?

1965490 Given the amount of Lanterns that have died, I wouldn't be surprised if the Corpse had lots of bodies to choose from
And I have worked to diversify the Corps... somewhat. Admittedly, I've focused mainly on Shining, so we haven't seen more of Kilowag, Tomar-Re, Ch'p or other alien types, but they'll get their scenes

Thaal Sinestro is a Korugaran, which is a race with red skin (or a red coat) as a primary defining feature...

_Checkmate_ has suggested making the inhabitants of Korugar be centaurs...

OMG! Sinestro can be the same race as Tiroc! :twilightoops:

Since it is clearly a very difficult choice to choose between pony form and humanoid form, as both have very good, logical arguments behind them, choose something with no logic behind it! For example, say, a living ring. Wouldn't that be interesting? A ring wearing a ring?

It depends. Is Kilowag Humanoid in this fic? With Kryptonians, it makes sense due to Dash being a Kryptonian. And martians can be explain as being changeling ancestors, before they needed love to survive. Having humanoid Members of the Corps is still going to come up, but just depends on what GLC character you use if they feel human-like or not.

You don't even have to make him a pony even if you go with the "pony are the humans of this verse" schtick. You could make him a Zebra or Kirin/Quilin or some other type of mystical horse-like creature to make him seem alien. Don't make him a pony just 'cause.

This is green lantern we're talking, among their member are a sentient Small pox virus and a planet, plus a head with with four legs and a tail, a a walking stick with one eye, and a Squirrel (and that ain't getting into the the humanoid dinosaur recruit and the six foot lemur recruit, or the robot). When he meet them, humanoids will seem like the most mundane this on the planet.

Also, I assume that Thanagarians in this universe are Griffins or Griffin-like, correct?

1965593 1965533 Well, Sinestro looks similar to the human take on the Devil and demons, so I figured why not keep up the Equestrian analogy. Also, I thought it was spelled Tirek.

1965684 Either that or Tirac, and I think I might make him closer to Trigon if I ever do a Teen Titans storyline

1965694 You know, I think I read a story on this site that had them being the same person. Also, I was merely meaning ascetically when I was talking about Sinestro. Wow, I'm starting to wonder why I ever thought he would stay a good guy; red skin, black hair, pointy ears, bony face, and a name sounding like sinister.... DC wasn't being very subtle on what they were gonna do with him, were they?

1965770 Which is why Sinestro would have earned epic levels in irony had he actually remained a heroic paragon!

Alternate Thaal Sinestro: "Decades of exemplary service in the corps, recognized as a paragon of heroism and duty by most of the spacefaring races in this galaxy alone, and of the trillions of languages that have developed, only yours has my name as a homonym for evil. Delightful." :facehoof:

Alternate Hal Jordan: "Sorry sir..." :twilightblush:

ATS: "I was merely appreciating the irony, Jordan."

You do realize that trying to ponify a Martian – a shapeshifter – means very little in the long run, right? :ajbemused:

Beyond that, I say stick with Sinestro's canon appearance – if anything, Shining is the one who stands out more among his fellow Corpsmen, as a non-biped.

Adds a bit more of an "alien" feel to it, if you think about it from a pony's point-of-view.

VBA

Well, as far as i know the Kryptonians were humanlike, and the martians are shape shifters.

Making him an Humanoid might detract from the ponyness of the story, however it is an interesting idea.

You could make him looks like another race from equestria, or you could make him monkeylike, instead of humanlike.

My Suggestion is for you to make him a non humanoid, but not a pony.
And make another Humanoid original species (or maybe "humans").

1965975 That would be even more like Tiroc. Or Tirok. Whichever way his name is spelled.:twilightblush:

I was surprised when you introduced the Lantern that died and gave Shining his ring as humanoid, so I'd say go with pony-like, but only to the extent that original Sinestro was human-like. Give him no fur, or something.

1966065 I think you're talking about Tirac (it's also spelled Tirek), the main villain of Escape from Midnight Castle.

1966182 Yes. Yes I am. :ajsmug:

Tirec is still a villain out of MLP lore. First generation maybe, but still from compatible epic fantasy style MLP lore, and worthy of standing alongside contemporary MLP villains such as Nightmare Moon, Discord, Chrysalis, and Sombra. And as a centaur with bright red skin and black hair, I could easily see him reinterpreted as a villain from Korugar. The only off-putting thing about him is that he has horns (which just might mean he's a hybrid with a minotaur type race as well).

1965770 His name is sinestro.
they wrnt subtle back them.
1965814 se this. Its brillant.
1965528 1965477 there are other quadraped animals that arent ponies. SInestro could be a talking lizard. It acheives both "alien-y" and 'Internal logic"!

1966363 SINESTRO AS A RED TALKING LIZARD IS SO STUPIDLY AWESOME

I HAVE TO USE IT

Well, the yellow ring is all about fear, right? And this is a CD-influenced setting, so... To strike fear into the hearts of his enemies, he should become a bat! :twistnerd:

Or a bat-winged pony.

I'd make him a Draconequus, simply because he was voiced by John DeLancie in Duck Dodgers :scootangel:

1966363 Interestingly enough, his name actually comes from the Latin word "Sinistra", which means "left handedness". Indeed, Sinestro is one of the few members of any corps who wields his ring on his left hand.

And there's the fact that we have no idea of what "Sinestro" actually means in Korugarian. For all we know it could mean "Saint goodguy" in his native tongue.

Or course, the fact that it sounds so much like the English word "Sinister" has absolutely nothing to do with anything. Nor his pointy ears, red skin, or twirly mustache. No sir :trollestia:

1966929 He's still a Green Lantern at this point, though...

1967021

He's still a Green Lantern at this point, though...

Ah. That's a good point. I mean, he's a Green Lantern named Sinestro who looks like the devil, and if DC was going for subtlety they kinda missed... :facehoof:

"Wash this new candidate'sh name, Ganthet?"

"'Sinestro.' I don't know about this one, Basilus. It's either the name, the appearance, or that severed head he uses to prop up his battery."

"Oh, it's be fiiine! By the way, you should try this new drink from Earth. They call it 'tequila.'"

But I get that you're not trying to be quite as obvious in your version.

1966419
I am happy to be of service:twilightblush:

1966937
I saw that episode. Its my favorite:twilightsmile:
Also, if Latin can make things like being left handed sound that cool, I totally want to learn it.

Why not both?

I vote you make him a centaur.

Ooh, toughy. Personally, if we're working with a universe that's been "ponified," then I'd say humanoids should be replaced with equines. If Shining met a humanoid Sinestro, it would feel less like a mashup and more like a crossover.

1967689
Actually, being left-handed in Latin – or rather, associated with the "left side" of anything – was considered a bad thing. Superstition more than anything, but for the Romans, evil didn't lurk under the bed or in the closet, but rather on the left side of... whatever object. Hence the association between "sinister" and "inauspicious" carrying over to modern-day English.

I'm fairly sure at least part of it came from how uncommon it was to be left-handed: something like 1 in every 9 people. (As a side bit of trivia, the Latin term for right-handedness was "Dexter/Dextra", which is where "dexterity" comes from.)

It has been a while since I have read the last few updates but if I'm not mistaken, wasn't Tomar Re portrayed as bipedal? And how are you going about visualizing Darkseid and the new gods in later stories?

I'm personally not against the ponification of the entire universe as it gives it its own flair, but going with the cannon humanoid appearance shouldn't necessarily break the illusion.

1969137 Tomar-Re and Kilowag have their canon appearances. And in my head most of the really powerful New Gods are probably alicorns (others like Barda or Desaad are one of the other races, and then there's Kalibak who's going to be something close to the main DCU)

Either one works. I suppose it depends on if you plan on bringing the lanterns back to equestria any time soon. The reaction from cadence is the lynchpin of how I view sinestro should be. Should her reaction be, "Ah! An earth pony with a yellow ring that shoots energy."

Or should her reaction be, "Ahh, an alien that's taller than me!"

Hmmm, in the interest of hilarious reactions, I'd just as soon go with human sinestro. Though depending on how that messes up your view of this Pony league, it's up to you.
