What if Discord's actual purpose was to get them to pick that flower?
He didn't know what was living under it, after all. And the thing living under it looked as if it might have been a guardian.
Maybe the flower was protected against Discord. Maybe it's something like the Tree of Harmony.
Hey, they're ponies... If they didn't plant it there, it has no business growing on its own. I think they brought the carcass back and dropped it in front of the Everfree Forest as a warning for it not to go getting out of line again.
Besides, someone needed to cure Applejack and Rarity before their sneezes caused all the apple trees and dress forms to come to life and overrun the town.
The graboid and the flower were actually life long mates sharing an extreme form of sexual dimorphism, hence it's wrath when the flower was ripped from the ground.
Not all was lost, though, the petals made for delicious sandwich fillings and the stem was processed into a most excellent mane lotion.
I expected something sober and thoughtful, connected to the WWI centennial this year.

I love the sexual dimorphism idea. It could also work as larvae/adult metamorphosis, a la piggies and the trees in Speaker for the Dead.
