State of the Writer, April 2024!

    It's another boring one! I ain't wrote nothin'! :B

It actually feels lately like I've been crawling out of a pit? So maybe there's a light ahead? But it's also blocked by Balatro lol somepony save me D:

The only other thing relevant to this blog is that I've had notes for a vs. post sitting in my notes document for probably the entire month now, what is wrong with me? D:

Fic recs, April 22nd: Jordan179 edition

Once again, though a good bit late, I bring it upon myself to memorialize an author via reviews of their stories. Though this time, it's different, as I had no connection to Jordan179 and only learned of his passing (three years ago this month, coincidentally), from this post

Another post about video games and Youtube and stuff

If I'm going to waste time watching shit on Youtube, the least I can do is tell people about it. :P

Ceave is a crazy Austrian with a love of video games and a head for philosophizing about them. Plus he really, really hates coins, no matter how tasty they may look.

Do you like video games? How about philosophy?

I like one of those things for sure, but no one combines the two better than a Youtuber named InfernalRamblings, a former professional game developer who now creates hour and a half long video essays about the meanings of video games and how they relate to the world today. Here's a few highlights, since this is now basically my only

Man, almost a week to read five stories? I haven't been walking nearly enough. :/

Princess Celestia Gets Mugged by BronyWriter
Genre: Comedy
So Princess Celestia needs a day off and goes out into Canterlot disguised as... Sigh. A pink-maned white pegasus named Sunny Skies. (No, I will never stop being bitter about that.) Anyway, that’s the end of my gripes with this story, as it kicks into high gear with great comedic timing and presents an all-around fun tale. The greatest bit in this is that Celestia is in no actual danger from being kidnapped because she’s OP as fuck and so has a lot of fun at her kidnappers’ expense. They, meanwhile, are too pony to actually be a threat anyway, which is just precious as hell. It’s got a wonderfully happy, not to mention just, ending, plus a good showing from Luna. I can’t think of a reason not to like this story.
Highly Recommended

Newbie Dish by Wanderer D
Genre: Comedy?
Funny how I keep running into stuff from the EQD speedfic contest. The nicest thing I can say about this story is that D has come a long way as a writer. More realistically, this just feels like it was written in two hours and then never looked back over. The main conceits are amusing, but the execution’s not there.

Having a Ball by Cereal Velocity
Genre: Character piece
Oh man, I remember that picture, and the comic that came with it. They were so cute, and so utterly out there that I’m not surprised someone took the time to try and explain them. And what an explanation Cereal’s come up with. My only qualm with this story is that he didn’t go quite far enough; I was anticipating a certain denouement, but the ending leaves everything unspoken. That said, Rarity’s backstory really is ripe for tales explaining why a fashionista found out that her special talent is finding gems. You might know him from EQD or his Equestrian Innovations videos, but this story proves that Cereal Velocity is grossly overlooked as a writer.

Twilight October by uSea
Reading by ShadowOfCygnus
Genre: Comedy
This is a really unique, by which I mean bizarre, story. “Ponies at play” turns out to be a wonderful topic; this made me think of the one about Book Fort and Red Lobster, when Twilight and Rarity were fillies A Simpler Time. This time around, though, it involves all of them as adults, which perhaps makes it even more precious. Interestingly, the pretend aspects are never allowed to overwhelm reality, as often happens in these sorts of stories. It’s made perfectly clear from the outset that their sea is made of pillows, despite the fact that Twilight’s Motherland apparently has a rich back story, and they're just playing. Ultimately fluffy, this is nevertheless funny as hell, and a good read if you need something quick to make yourself feel good.

Half-Baked by Aquaman
Genre: Comedy
More Rainbow dash can’t bake speedfic! (Man, it’s like everyone did this; why hasn’t there been another of these events?) This one feels a bit like a first draft, especially toward the beginning; no way of knowing if it’s been edited since. But what works is the characters, especially Pinkie Pie. This is just a quick vignette of Rainbow Dash not learning a lesson and causing havoc, and it’s really, really funny. Those turned off by copious fandom references might want to give it a pass, though (it was a different time).

The Book Fort, Red Lobster one is called A Simpler Time.

PCGM is on my RiL.
Half Baked is added.
The others I read and agree with your reviews.

EDIT: I actually read Half Baked before. It was just that forgettable.

Twilight October was great.

Every day, I do an hour and a half on the treadmill, pre-read a story, and then finish the remaining walk time by reading stuff off my to-read list. :V
