State of the Writer, 2023, plus review stats! · 10:56pm Dec 31st, 2023

Dear Princess Celestia, I didn't write nothin'. :B

Is there any chance of me writing anew in 2024? I'd say probably not!

Sucks!

Stats below. Everyone likes those.

Not only is this is the first year I have published (let alone written) no horsewords, I also coincidentally published no vs. posts. The one I was going to publish yesterday turned out to have a couple more chapters left in the audiobook, so it's coming later this week. x_x

So, out of the 615 story reviews (up nearly 200 from last year!) I did in 2023:

79 were highly recommended (12.8%)
209 were normal recommended (34.0%)
195 were conditionally recommended (31.7%)
65 were vaguely recommended (11.1%)
and just 64 were not recommended! (10.4%)

It was a good year for reading fanfic! :O Also a good year for listening to it, as I listened to 510 audiobooks from 12 different readers! (That's a ridiculous 82% of the reviews!) VisualPony and Midnight29 of course had the most, with 191, followed by Lotus Moon with 149 and Agent0Fluffy with 141.

The authors I reviewed most were Ice Star with 9 stories, PonyThunder with 7, Jhoira with 6, and Silent Whisper and TheExhaustedBrony tied at 5.

…Of course, that's not the whole truth. :( We lost a couple of authors this year, and in memorializing their work, I reviewed 15 stories by Level Dasher and 13 by Ninjadeadbeard. May they rest in peace.

And that's all. Sorry to leave off on a down note, but that's kinda how 2023 has felt. c_c I mean, I more dread next year, but I don't like talking about that because it's even more depressing. Let's just hope things don't get worse; hoping they get better is done in vain.

*hugs* You had a hell of a year, no horsewords is valid. and you did soo many blogs!

We are everyone and we approve this message. :pinkiecrazy:

Rollercoasters only go downward on average; live for the occasional upswings and loop-de-loops! :ajsmug:

2023 wasn't a great year for me either, both in fic writing (just the one off Jinglemas, and glacial progress at unpublished material), and other areas of life. So, I relate.

Granted, my down year mostly stemmed from excessive decision paralysis over various projects and that combatting with more guilt over doing relaxation hobbies that leaves me doing less of both. Not as severe as some of your stuff. :twilightsheepish:

And being up almost 50% on fic reviewed ain't nothing, mate! Take pride in that, at least. You've clearly got down using audio readings to get through lots of short stories down to a science, anyway.

I'll look forward to the vs. post. Whether I have or (more often) haven't read the fic in question, they're often a good time.

Also, because I am, if anything, even more of a stats nerd, here's an extra one: if we assign number values to your ratings in a scale of 1 to 5, your average rating for a fic this year was 3.28 (or Conditionally Recommended and 28% of the way to Recommended). For comparison, I went back to your 2022 stats blog, and the same formula gave a 3.5. Most probably the hefty reliance on audiobooks this year led to a lot of low-hanging fruit. We will see the same in reverse with my own 2023 Ponyfic Reviews Stats (in-progress, expect it soon), where I went from 22.55% being audiobook readings to only 10.86%.

…Yeah, can you tell I don't use them much except when I see it linked in the fic description and/or a Scribbler one pops up in my path? :twilightsheepish:

Happy to have you here.~
