I like writing about the worst day of a character's life; it lets us see the mettle inside. (Pronouns: RB/20 )

    Some books I love

I haven't produced much content lately. Just not feeling "pony." Been working on some space opera I might post to Royal Road or Amazon or something someday.

In light of my recent lack of content, have some of my favorite books:

Kid: We learned about "SPQR" in ancient Rome.

    Me: Romanes eunt domes!

    Wife: What?

    Me: Don't worry about it.

    Always worth a re-read

I just re-read, for the sixth or eighth time, one of my all time favorite books:
Neptune's Inferno: The U.S. Navy at Guadalcanal, James D. Hornfischer

Kid: Daddy, I want to go to Barnes and Noble, please.
    Me: Sure. Why?
Kid: I want to read the first book in the "Warrior Cats" series.
Me: Reading is always encouraged in the house. Get in the car.

Movie review: Puss in Boots the Last Wish · 12:23am Mar 12th, 2023

I am speechless.

This movie was beyond good. This is one of the best movies I have ever seen in my life.

I am trying to find words, but I can't. So I'll free associate; no spoilers below.

  • The writing was beyond sharp. Every character had a motivation that drove their actions, and those motivations were all incompatible, driving the plot and the character's arc, their change.
  • The antagonists—yes, plural—were each very, very different. We had the determinator, the rogue, and the psychopath, and they all stayed well within their archetype while remaining fresh.
  • The obstacles placed in front of the characters played to their weaknesses, not their strengths. That's always so important to make the character rise and to let us see their mettle. (How many horrible New Column stories put the character—a Halo Spartan, say—up against the problem they're trained and equipped to solve? Boring. Put the character in a situation that tests them against their former view of themself.)

The imagery, the animation, beyond excellent. Especially the scenery. The scenery was alive.

And the voice acting was perfect.

Honest to Luna, I'm going to have to watch this movie at least twice more to properly understand how excellent it is. This is without a doubt the best movie I've seen in a year or two. It's probably up there with Greyhound in terms of my recent favorites.

I can't recommend it enough.

*Whistles in terrifying wolf*

I just watched it today and holy hell Dreamworks gave that movie everything they had! I was amazed they managed to get away with a couple of the jokes for a kids movie:rainbowlaugh: And I couldn’t agree more with your point about the obstacles the characters faced. I feel like that’s what creates engaging conflict. Part of me also felt like this was Dreamworks asserting dominance over Disney and Pixar. Don’t know if it’s just me, but Disney and Pixar’s latest films have been very meh. Not outright horrible by any means, but more like you’ll forget most of it in a week. Again, maybe that’s just me.

Love that movie

SpaceBattles fanfics in a nutshell. In fact, there seems to be a lot of overlap between this site and that site's cultures, even though there are few bronies there.

Fantastic film, all in all.

Also, obligatory mention of how the Wolf was phenomenal as an antagonist.

Speaking of overcoming obstacles, note that Puss loses his sword early on and only regains it at the end

It was far better than it had any right to be.

How does a sequel to a ten year old spin off movie from Shrek go this hard?

Why is writing this good so rare these days?

Pretty sure it was metaphorically his self-esteem.

So The Last Wish has been in what's known as development hell since the first movie. It was announced --with trailers even--again and again over the years. This version of it was the fourth attempt to make something of it, and handed to the team behind The Bad Guys, who seem to have an interest in really putting the work in. The battle with the giant from the opening was, IIRC, shown in the original trailer years ago with a different coat of paint and clearly meant to be a finale.

Whatever this team does next, I am there, because they are clearly pouring their heart and soul into what they make. And the result is one of those "once every few years" films.

Edit: Also, I am so glad to see folks here correctly identifying Death as an antagonist, and not as a villain, unlike the YouTube clickbait farm.

Ah, that explains a lot. I really enjoyed The Bad Guys which was also surprisingly good!

So, if this what Dreamworks can produce with this team... I am definitely keeping an eye on their next project.

5717910 Sometimes an animated movie *needs* to have gone through developmental hell in order to come out well, much like steel needs the fire to make it into a sword. Another fine example is The Emperor's New Groove, which burned money and production personnel like a torch, swapping voice actors and re-recording scenes until Disney *HAD* to promote and polish the final result or see a ton of cash go down the drain.

And our world's supply of cool memes would suffer.

Then let’s jump right to the gold standard of animated films.

How’s it hold up against Megamind?
