She’d fallen out of the bush just in front of her. The look in her eyes had been wild and confused. Her fur was all snarled with brambles and fluffed up in fright, and when she’d seen Smith she’d gone white as a ghost.
‘Can I help you, sugarcube?’
‘Twilight Sparkle. What?’ Eyes wide, she’d leaned in, examining Smith’s features so closely that if she’d been a stallion Smith would have swatted her away.
‘You alright?’
The mare had shaken her head, and bolted for town.
Yes, that had been a strange one, thought Smith, and flipped the pancake over.
ah the double-meaning in "if she'd been a stallion" and argh. just idk. this is only my second time reading this fic from the beginning to end but it somehow feels like a favorite scene in a favorite movie i want to go back and rewatch over and over, and this is where i feel all nice and warm that a character i love within it is making her first appearance. her coat being snarled with branches and fluffed up, her panicked and confused self-introduction, just everything is so wonderfully panic-Twilight and i love her so much!
I'm confused by the seeming lack of an age difference between them. Wish I knew how old each of them are in this scene.

At this point in the story Granny Smith is around ~21, and I imagine Twilight to be about the same, maybe a year or two older. So yeah, not much difference. Twilight would have slipped back in time around the year 1430 or so. The point of canon departure is probably sometime season 2/3.
