Until it becomes the sad reality of "Violence is the only exit" do you really think Spike couldn't have killed everyone that ignored him, bullied him, told him he was never supposed to be born?
Do I have to remind you all of the sad situations, not only in the US, but, around the world where bullied kids never get the help they ask for and end up doing despicable acts like school shootings, or even worst, commit suicide?
Although I have to admit, at first that was going to be the central message of the fic, Spike killing everyone that wronged him and become a devil, but then I realized that. Although violence sometimes seems like the "Best" course of action, that it makes you feel... empowered, taking revenge, is what makes you a coward, and yes, sometimes people take advantage of "kindness" but, the guilt you feel when you do, THAT can kill... trust me, I know... I've had enough examples in my family.

I didn't mention violence as the vanguard, I mentioned it as the reaction and the most common conclusion.
The problem is the sheer differance between expected emotions, what occurs and the trench-like cognitive dissonance and mental gymnastics all the females and spike himself runs through.
Spike pretends nothing happened, he's too merciful despite the entire paragraphs upon paragraphs of evidence to the contrary.
I'd expect some backbone, I'd expect some bitterness, some residual anger, what I don't expect is someone willing to bend over backwards to accommodate those who despised him and someone so intrinsically foolish that he trusts a tormentor, not even a day past their false claims to innocence.
It's like if I just came out of a hospital from a stab wound, then decided to trust the woman who stabbed me with the care of my own child.
Does that sound like any kind of sane decision?

"You don't forgive someone because they need it, you forgive someone because you need it," -Asura Kraken
Spike spent so much time suffering that he believed he is a monster (Chapter 8), therefore the reason for his actions. He is still trying to figure out if he really is a monster or not.
The girls and boys he has re-befriended, have accepted their faults and previous mistakes, and are trying to make right from them.

That makes substantially more sense than what I've pursed through thus far. I'm barely quaterway through the story, so I might be missing pieces.
Essentially he has no sense of self with which to oppose anyone around him.
I'll give you due thanks for that much explanation.
Far as my own motto goes, I don't forgive often, call it selfish, that's what it is. At the end of the day no sane man will put you before themself, it's all just a game and you're not the only player, act it.
There's no bad in being selfish, nor any in being angry or kind, simply measure your amounts.
I just despise an imbalance claiming stability.
I'll complete a review later, seeing as I haven't finished, a toast to the hope of progression improvement, 8 months is some time for it.
Is this story still going?
