Chapter 4

It was only early morning when Dream Catcher roamed the market of Ponyville. A few ponies were out and about, doing their daily business. Today was the day she needed to set her plan in motion. She couldn't stay here any longer, especially considering how weak she was with hunger. It was now, or never. She'd already made preparations, and all that was left to lead Fluttershy away from those friends of hers, and then everything would fall perfectly into place. A part of her hated having to do this, but she had no other choice. Those ponies had stolen her only friend, and made her forget that she ever existed! For that, they needed to know what it was like to have their friend taken away, and to be forgotten. The crisp morning air blew her pastel green mane behind her, chilling her oh so slightly.

"I admit, I'll miss this quaint little town, but with Fluttershy, I won't ever need anypony else." she said. First thing's first, she needed to find a way to get Fluttershy alone. Which wasn't as easy as it sounded. A smile spread across her face when she saw her friend, purchasing some ripe cherries.

"Hey, Fluttershy!" she called waving at her. Fluttershy saw her and waved back.

"Good morning Dream Catcher," she said. "are you shopping here as well?" Dream Catcher shook her head.

"No, I just wanted to talk to you about something."

"What is it?"

"I know I've been spending a lot of time with you lately, and you're probably tired of having me hanging around you-"

"Oh, not at all, you're no bother."

"-but you've been so kind to me, and treated me like a true friend. I just, wanted to know, if you'll spend one last day with me, before I go." Fluttershy tilted her head in confusion.

"Go? Go where?" she asked. Dream Catcher hid a smile when she saw that she had her right where she wanted her.

"You see, since the day we met, my family has been planning to move, we'll be going far away, and I don't know if I'll even be able to visit you. When we started to become friends, I wanted to spend as much time with you as I could, because once I move, I'll be alone again." said Dream Catcher. Fluttershy a hoof to her mouth and gasped.

"You're not alone, even if you're far away, I'll still be your friend." Dream Catcher had her head lowered, and looked up at Fluttershy with wide eyes.

"So, will you spend the day with me before I go?" she asked. Fluttershy nodded.

"Of course I will." said Fluttershy. "What are friends for?"

"Thank you Fluttershy." said Dream Catcher. 'Everything is going exactly as planned.'

"I'll get everything planned, I'll let my friends know so that it'll be just the two of us." said Fluttershy. Dream Catcher grinned.

"I'd like that very much."

Fluttershy had informed her friends that she was spending the day with Dream Catcher, and would be busy for the duration of that time. The girls respected her wishes, except Discord, who was spying on Fluttershy and Dream Catcher from the bushes as they strolled together side by side. A pair of binoculars in his paw and claw. He was determined to get rid of Dream Catcher, and he was going to make sure that Fluttershy didn't know he had anything to do with whatever occurrences that should happen to pop up during their outing today.

"Look at them, having a good time." he grumbled. "Well, not if I have anything to say about it." With a snap he materialized to a new hiding place. Together they stopped by Sugarcube Corner for some fresh cupcakes, where he wore the brilliant pony disguise he'd used when he'd been hunting down Tirek. If it could fool him, it was bound to fool these ponies! As a taupe gray unicorn with a black mane, and a tornado cutie mark, he peered over his menu, watching the ponies from a nearby table.

"Since this is your last day, why don't you pick out the cupcakes." said Fluttershy in her usual kind manner. Discord couldn't help but smile as he looked at Fluttershy, there was something he admired about the pegasus. She'd shown him such kindness, and for that he was grateful, and it was also for that reason that he couldn't allow this under-hoofed mare to trick his beloved friend.

"Let's see." said Dream Catcher as she pondered over the menu. "How about one of each flavor? I wanna try them all."

"You're sure you can eat them all?" Fluttershy asked teasingly. "I'd hate to have to roll you out of here." Dream Catcher batted a hoof.

"Please, I can handle a few cupcakes."

"Okay, don't say I didn't warn you." Discord's mind spun as he came up with a great trick. Mrs. Cakes headed toward the table, balancing a towering mound of cupcakes and balancing them as she carried it to them.

"Here you go girls." she said in a strained voice, setting it down with a plop. "Enjoy." Dream Catcher goggled at the cupcakes.

"I didn't think it'd be that much." she said.

"Still think you can handle it?"

"Yes! I"ll just need to pace myself." Discord activated his magic just as Dream Catcher was about to eat one of the cupcakes. When Dream Catcher however bit into it, something strange happened. Two deer antlers (not unlike the one he usually had) sprouted from her head.

"What the-?"

"Oh my goodness!" said Fluttershy, shocked by the change. She inspected one of the cupcakes carefully. "Do you suppose they accidentally slipped some sort of potion into the batter?" Dream Catcher let out a chuckle. She tapped her new horns with a hoof.

"I gotta say, it may be strange, but it's kind of cool. After all, I've never had horns before." After a few minutes, the horns vanished.

"I wonder what the other cupcakes do." said Fluttershy curiously, taking a bite. She let out a yelp of surprise as she suddenly became covered in a red and black harlequin pattern. Even her eyes and mane were different colors.

"My, my!" said Dream Catcher. The two of the roared with laughter, and dug into the cupcakes, having fun with the temporary transformations. Some of which included transforming into other animals, making odd squawks and animal calls, and changing colors or sizes. By the time they finished, they were stuffed full of magic cupcakes and their sides hurt from all their laughing. Discord gritted his teeth and slammed his hoof onto the table. How could his trick backfire? He needed to take things up a notch if he was ever to get rid of Dream Catcher. The girls left Sugercube Corner, their transformations fading away as they headed onto the next activity. For this, they stopped beneath a tall riverside tree, where a few books were propped up for them.

"You said you enjoyed a good book, so I thought you might like these." said Fluttershy. Dream Catcher eagerly plopped down and took the first book she saw: Legends of the Stars. Discord, who was up in the tree, watching them from below, snapped his talons. When Dream Catcher opened the book, she was surprised that it had no words, and only the illustrations remained.

"I must've grabbed the wrong book from Twilight." said Fluttershy. Dream Catcher shook off the disappointment and said, "It's okay. Besides, we can make up a story aloud based on these pictures."

"I've never done that before, I don't know if I'll be any good." said Fluttershy timidly.

"You don't know if you don't try." Dream Catcher pointed out. Fluttershy consented and the two made up a story together, each one interrupting the other to add something new to the tale they were weaving. Discord dug his claws into the bark of the tree and clawed into it, leaving marks in it. And so it went, that Discord tried to ruin their day, only to be thwarted by Dream Catcher finding the bright side of the situation. He was about ready to chuck her into another universe, but then Fluttershy would be mad at him, and have him bring the pony back before she ended their friendship for good. Even so, he was tired of trying to use subtly, right now all he wanted was to use a trick that was effective and that Dream Catcher wouldn't be able to turn around. He was practically grinding his teeth to shards as he watched Fluttershy lead Dream Catcher to a clearing, the sun was staring to lower and the sky was being lit up with orange and pink colors.

"And now, for the grand finale to a grand day." Fluttershy said, her voice filled with pride. "Give me a quick moment." she said, ducking into the underbrush. Dream Catcher sat down and gazed up at the sky. She was taken by surprise as a large boa constrictor appeared from nowhere, wrapped around the pony, squeezing the air out of her. Discord smirked. 'Try getting out of that one!' he thought. When Fluttershy headed back to the clearing, she let out a cry as she saw what was happening to Dream Catcher.

"Oh my goodness!" Cried Fluttershy, rushing toward the poor pony. "How dare you mister!" she said to the snake. "Attacking a poor defenseless pony for no good reason. You should be ashamed of yourself." she scolded like an angry mother. "Now go on, and think about what you've done. Go on, go!" The snake whimpered and did as she said, loosening his grip on Dream Catcher and slithering off into the bushes. Dream Catcher gasped a few times, letting the air get back into her.

"Are you okay?" Fluttershy asked, full of concern. Dream Catcher nodded.

"Just got the wind knocked out of me, nothing too serious." she said. "What was it you wanted to show me?" Fluttershy remembered what it was she had planned for the finale.

"Right, I almost forgot." She clapped her hooves, and from the trees, a flurry of glimmering fireflies flew through the air. They buzzed around them and formed made up constellations above their heads. Just as Fluttershy had instructed them to do.

"This is beautiful." breathed Dream Catcher, her heart felt as though it were swelling twice its size. She gave Fluttershy her kindest smile. "This has been the greatest day, and the greatest gift anypony has ever given me, I can't thank you enough Fluttershy." The two embraced each other in a tight hug. Their friendship strengthening.

"Oh come on!" shouted an irritated voice. "Are you serious!" Both of them looked up and turned to the bushes where Discord had been hiding. He left his hiding spot and floated above the ground, glowering at Dream Catcher.

"I've been patient, but this is the last straw! I've had just about enough of you, Dream Catcher!" he yelled.

"Discord!" Discord blinked, looking down at Fluttershy, who he remembered was there. He smiled weakly at the now angry pegasus.

"Ah Fluttershy, fancy running into you here." he said with a nervous laugh. But Fluttershy narrowed her eyes, looking just as angry as ever.

"Don't think you can try to talk yourself out of this one mister." she said. Discord winced under the disapproving gaze of those deep teal eyes. "You've been causing trouble all day for us, and I think it's about time you apologized."

"Y-you knew?" he asked shocked that he'd been discovered.

"Well of course I knew! Did you think I was a silly, gullible fool?" Discord put his eagle claw behind him, rubbing the back of his neck and not meeting her eye. He'd been hoping that he'd fooled her, but apparently he was wrong.

"Apologize to Dream Catcher this instant!" said Fluttershy, her anger rising.

"Why should I? That crazy pony had it coming, she's been trying to take you away from me, from the rest of your friends!" he said, pointing an accusing claw at the pony in question.

"I thought you've gotten over this! I thought you'd learned your lesson. I can make friends with anypony I want, and I don't need you to tell me who can or can't be my friend." The two looked at one another intensely, their emotions were flaring up in the heat of the moment.

"He's right." said Dream Catcher. Fluttershy turned to her in surprise. "I just wanted to be your friend, because to me, you were the only true friend I ever had. But instead, I ended up upsetting your friend and made him believe that I was stealing you away." Her lint gray eyes filled with tears, her voice started to break as she spoke.

"Perhaps it's best that I'm leaving. I won't bother you or your friendship anymore." Dream Catcher galloped off into the bushes.

"Dream Catcher, wait!" Fluttershy called, hurrying after her. She stopped momentarily to shoot Discord a look. "I'm very disappointed in you." Discord felt the anger in him drain away, now replaced with guilt as Fluttershy disappeared. Had he been wrong? Had he only imagined that conversation between him and Dream Catcher during Tuesday Tea? All he knew was that he'd made Fluttershy angry at him. And it didn't seem like she'd be forgiving him too easily. He'd been a victim of jealousy, and it'd cost him his best friend.

"What have I done?" he asked himself.

Fluttershy found Dream Catcher, knelt down on the grass and silently weeping into her hooves.

"Dream Catcher?" Fluttershy asked, cautiously putting a hoof on her. She hoped that what Discord had said and done hadn't upset her friend too much. She (almost) couldn't believe what he'd done! She knew he could be a bit possessive of her, seeing as how she was his first and best friend, but he'd crossed the line. He'd need to do a lot in order to make up for what he'd done.

"You should go back to your friend, I'll only cause you nothing but trouble." whimpered Dream Catcher. Fluttershy's heart felt sympathy toward the pony and tried to comfort her.

"No you won't. You're a good pony, and a good friend. I'm sorry about what Discord has done, he can be immature and jealous, and I'll see to it he thoroughly apologizes and makes up for all he's done." Dream Catcher wiped her cheeks. She faced Fluttershy, their eyes meeting.

"You're my true friend, right?" she asked, blinking back tears. Fluttershy smiled warmly at the pony.

"Yes, we're both friends."

"I'm glad to hear you say that." said Dream Catcher. She pulled out an old bag that she'd kept hidden. Fluttershy regarded it curiously as Dream Catcher reached in and pulled something out. It look like dust the color of dandelion gold. Dream Catcher held it out in her open hoof.

"I'm sorry about this."

"Huh?!" Dream Catcher took a breath and blew all of the dust into Fluttershy's face. Fluttershy's eyes shut and she let out a cough. A wave of sleepiness passed over. She put a hoof to her head as she swooned. Dream Catcher caught her, and held the sleeping pegasus in her arms.

"Sweet Dreams" Dream Catcher whispered softly into Fluttershy's ear. Now she had reclaimed her friend, it was time to go home.

"Princess Luna circled over Ponyville, her blue eyes looking for any trace of the disturbance she'd felt a few nights ago. But once again, she had no luck. As she flew over the treetops and the clearing, she stopped and noticed Discord sulking below. She flew down to him, to see what was the matter with him.

"Everything alright Discord?" inquired Luna. Discord let out a yelp of surprise that made him jump a little.

"Didn't your sister ever tell you not to sneak up on ponies?" Discord asked, upset about the new addition to his rotten day. The princess shook her head.

"I couldn't help but notice that something seems to be troubling you." said Luna.

"Troubling? What could possibly be troubling me?" he asked venomously. "Other than the fact that I may have made a dire mistake that's made my best friend mad at me, and probably leave me forever. Other than that, things are quite peachy." Princess Luna could see that she'd touched onto a delicate subject. Before she could say something though, she spaced out as she felt another disturbance. Discord took notice of this and waved a paw in front of Luna's eyes.

"Hello?! Earth to Luna!" Luna blinked.

"Not again." she muttered.

"What is it?" asked Discord.

"There's a disturbance that I felt here in Ponyville, this is the second time I've sensed it. It's close by." Luna headed in the direction of the disturbance, Discord, with nothing better to do at the moment, followed after the princess. Through the trees and bushes, to another, smaller clearing. They entered to find a shocking sight. Dream Catcher was opening a swirling portal of blue light, and soundly sleeping on her back was Fluttershy, her body limp as Dream Catcher stepped toward the portal.

"What in the world?!" cried Discord. Dream Catcher stopped, and looked over at Discord over her shoulder. She smirked darkly.

"I told you, Fluttershy is mine." Discord reached toward the ponies.

"No! Give her back!"

"I ORDER YOU TO CEASE AND DESIST!!" Luna shouted in her royal Canterlot voice. But Dream Catcher didn't listen, she and Fluttershy passed through the portal and it vanished behind them. Discord dropped to his knees, overcome with shock over what'd just happened. His beloved best friend was gone. And the last thing they did together was argue.

"What was that?" asked Discord, devastated. Luna's eyes didn't look off where the portal had been.

"That, was the work of a Nightmare." she said.

Author's Note:

In the next chapter, all will be explained. Will Discord and Fluttershy be reunited? How will they get her back? Just wait and see. I hope I did well with Dream Catcher enraging Discord.
