I haven't commented on this before, but I just want to say: good freakin job. I'm really loving this fic.
Special congratulations for the scene between Nadira and Candy. It's a cliche, it's been done to death, but the way handle it is solidly fresh. I think that comes from how Nadira isn't actually completely comforting to the point of sappiness, like in other works - personally, I might have even gone a bit harder with that, and maybe even have her acknowledge Candy's responsibility (and that of every other little factor) a bit more explicitly, but it's still powerful as hell. I don't normally tear up reading stuff, but damn. "No more lies to the ones we love." Those lines, man.
The beginning of this chapter was painful to read. All I could think of was all the Radaways I'm sitting on in my games, wondering what the heck I'm going to do with them.
So, this Mizani can see the future. Sounds familiar. No doubt the recipe survived and is being used by the one that gave them the dynamite.
Hang on I have to try and guess. Margarita's Mean Mercenary Mares.
Well, things are certainly getting more interesting by the chapter.
Among the things I am liking so far is that Candy and Nohta's reliance on a native wastelander feels more...natural, than in many fics, I suppose? Really that's a lot of what I'm enjoying so far about this fic: so much of it feels natural, while a lot of FOE sidefics have at least some substantial parts that feel forced, like the writer is just throwing in things because, well, FOE fics are supposed to do those things, right?
I still appreciate how actual malice is still uncommon enough here to have some sting to it. While many of the ponies and creatures Nohta and Candy fight are malevolent, others are just acting out of their circumstances and natures. Ditto for how the philosophizing feels: here it actually fits into the narrative at down times when there's a lull in the action, rather than just peppering every single paragraph with a sentence about morality, depravity, etc.
That said, I do also have a few gripes with the story thus far. For one, the hooks and tips we've gotten so far as to the larger story are already getting into future predictions/fate, which I have to admit just tend to render stories less interesting for me. I realize it's a matter of taste, though.
Also, I can't help but wish we were getting to see/hear the story from Nohta's point of view. I like Candy and I will agree that she is, thankfully, her own character and all. That said, I do feel just a bit miffed to have a whole story come from a character with her archetype again: brainy, Stable-dwelling unicorn is forced out into the wasteland and has to learn to defend themselves while worrying about if they're going "too far" and turning into the monsters they're fighting.
All that said, to reiterate my overall point: really good fic and glad I found this. The only reason I'm not catching up any faster is how long the chapters are.
