ATTENTION

With my increasing unreliability due to the events, I advise all questions about the group to be PM'ed to metallusionsismagic as probably the current most reliable of us, or posted at our Discord server (the link's on our front page).

As it was said, here you can post your questions and suggestions regarding the group. That will be replied as soon as a free admin is available. Experienced users can answer questions as well, if they are sure their information is correct.

Until Fimfiction has convenient notifications for new thread comments, I advise you to ask questions by replying to this initial post (and to subsequent comments in our conversation)—lesser chance I miss your message then.

Remember that information here may become outdated, and replies on the first page are the oldest. Information here is meant for immediate consumption, for links to updatable documentation refer to the group's frontpage.

You go to your record and leave a comment on it, specifying what changes do you wish to make. If your Google account is not known to our staff (or you have none), you will be asked for a confirmation that the comment is yours by one of our admins (me, most likely). If a Google account is present, it will be internally marked as your trusted account, so no excessive confirmation in the future. Finally, what you have required in the comment gets done, if it doesn't break the rules.

Or you can PM me (as I am currently reachable) with changes you need, and then we negotiate the matter.

Uhm... I came here because My story isn't doing well, I don't have Google Docs, and I'm left with pretty much nothing currently...

Basically, I'm told that I need an editor, so I came here, and I don't know what to do, I have no clue if I need Docs or not. Help?

Well, the most basic sequence is you go to this web page, that is our proofreader search engine, and proceed to the "Proofreader's genre preferences" switch field. There you move switches of genres relevant to your story to "may like," and try to move switches for genres that are primary genres for your story to "likes" (not more than 3 genres in this position). When doing that, watch the count of matched results, coz if the switches' combination is too restrictive, you'll end up with no search results. After switching some switches, in the bottom you should see a list of proofreaders whose claimed specialisation matches your needs. You can click "show settings" below the switch field, and check "sort by last online on Fimfiction" so proofreaders most recently being online will be listed at the top of the list. Then you can look through the results, look at proofreaders' cards and their notes (I suggest to follow the Document link for that, coz imported data is a lil fuzzy), and go to their Fimfiction profiles to contact them with a polite request to proofread your story. If you wish to get a better grasp on how our group works, you can read the information on our frontpage, and also follow a link to The Proofreader Docs in the Toolbox section. That will provide you with some context. If more questions arise during this, currently you can PM me about that.

Do I also type in the name of my story?

I just sent a letter to PoisonClaw.

In a private message? Well, it is highly recommended to provide some information about your story, the level of details similar to what is mentioned in our thread posting rules: story title, genres, general plot, characters. Size, probably. When requesting help from a proofreader, it is a good idea to give them some context for making a decision.

6026622
To piggy/ponyback (lol) off Samneo's PM discussion: Do the PM's need to be formated the same way as a thread? because I'm still kinda experimenting with where I wanna go with my story. (it's my first) Titles, ratings & genre's might change 'cause I'm not sure of anything yet. shall I just warn the person In the PM (They seem to have an open mind) and put 'working title' in the perentheses?

The reason why we made all those thread posting rules, a detailed request is supposed to be more attractive to a proofreader contrary to something like "I need help, [you must] PM me!" At least it's what our calculations based on a spherical proofreader model say (in a vacuum). The more detailed is your description, the better a proofreader can feel your story, and decide if they want to work with it. That is not quite so, a description shouldn't be too big, but you get the idea. Provide your potential proofreader with something they can make a decision from. If you haven't even that minimum, maybe you should to think over what you are going to write for a while.
Actually, we haven't standardized private messaging in our group, so technically all this is just a recommendation; but the general principle is meant to make your request more readable, and thus getting read with higher probability.
Well, something like that. )

A usual way is to send them a private message here, on Fimfiction. TPGDB provides you with a link to a Fimfiction profile for each proofreader, for example.

Ok then i have done so

I need a pre-raider, where can I find one?

Kody Wiremane

If you mean "a pre-reader," our group may provide some:
- our documents and how they work;
- search all the docs in one place, automatically;
- PM them, and if no one gives a positive reply, try and make a request via our forum (please stick to the rules).

This, the rules, and some other useful stuff, you can find on our front page. Any additional explanation required?

I need an editor to my current story, where could I find one?

I'm in need of an editor to help with my grammar and paragraphs apparently. Do you know anyone who can help

Just a remark: when you use the Reply » button on my comment here, I receive a notification an can get to you sooner. When you just post, there is no notification, and I can spot your entry only when visiting the forum / feed. This is how Fimfiction's forums work.

As for where and how to find an editor. Basically, what we do is described on our front page and in linked documents. We have a list of available proofreaders in several Google Docs, and you should to pick some and PM them asking for help. We have a helper tool to search all the docs at once, though it's broken right now because of a recent update of Fimfiction. But when it's back online, you can use that too. And our forum is your last resort, if no one responds to your messages positively, or you are just lazy to deal with messaging. There is no guarantee you get response even on the forum, but to increase your odds, it's highly recommended to follow the posting rules that you can find on our front page. Posts like "Need a proofreader, PM meh!" totally look like spam, so please put some effort into it.

If you think it's too complicated, you can find some group where the forum is a primary way to contact proofreaders. This one, for example.

hello i'm new here i need help with my story

Hi!

Normal way: You read text here between the reading Applejack above and the serious Twilight below, following links provided if you need. At least a glance here can tell you how we organize things. Then you use TPGDB to find a proofreader, and then PM them on Fimfiction. If it fails for some reason, use our forum (we have rules for that too, read them).

Quick way: go to TPGDB, figure out how to seek proofreaders with it, and use it. Then message those whom you have selected.

Lazy way: Just post your callout to our forum and wait for replies. But you should read our rules anyway before doing so, otherwise your mindless posting can upset at least three group admins, and several proofreaders.

We're more a self-care kind of a group, so reading our docs before asking is appreciated. Though if you get new questions in the process, feel free to ask.

(I posted something similar like this in my blog)
Hey guys I've been working on a huge fanfiction called 'Blue Steel Yamato' (the story overview is below this message) and I was wondering if you guys know anyone that can proofread my work. I've only done the Chapter 1 to 3 and still working chapter 4. The prologue is done by a previous proofreader but unfortunately, he quitted due to life stuff. So I found this group so this makes think that I hope this is the opportunity to find a proofreader. So can I ask in a nice way as possible do guys know anyone who is committed to proof my fanfic. Thank you.

Author's Overview of Blue Steel Yamato
The fanfic 'Blue Steel Yamato' is basically a story about the old battleship Yamato coming back to life from the seafloor by one of the main characters like Imperial Crest (My OC name) with the help of his friends to save his country Zipang (outside of Equestria basically similar to Japan) from being captured by the New Lunar Republic forces using the battleship Yamato. The story takes place around the main show to the present. The series will focus on the ship (possibly) and the characters (there will be more characters later in the fanfic series) and their development and challenges they have to face as the story progresses. Its basically inspired story from the popular military/sci-fi/ space opera anime genre called Space Battleship Yamato (both classic and remake) with the mlp setting but not in space but in the expanded world of Equestria and the Yamato is in its WW2 look, not the space battleship version. There will be other references from animes, cartoons, movies in the series that's gonna be mentioned or appear. So that's basically the overview of my fanfic.

Hey Crest, you are posting to a thread for questions about our group, not for requesting proofreader service. This group focuses on authors choosing proofreaders from a detailed list, and contacting them proactively. Posting to the forum and waiting proofreaders' response is a secondary method to get a proofreader, though it is acceptable, as long as you follow the thread-posting rules. Please read our front page thoroughly, it is supposed to explain things.

6616067
K thanks sorry about that

Hi so I'm looking for a proofreader/editor and was wondering if I can post my request for one in the group?

Kody Wiremane
Group Admin

6617504
Yes you can.

P. S. Remember the rules.

6617948
I am also looking for an editor/proof reader but because of the time zone between Germany and America it is very difficult to find a proofreader.

Kody Wiremane
Group Admin

6617960
Yes, but do you really need a proofreader from the same time zone? You don't have to be in one TZ to read each other's messages, after all. Do you have any specific need that demands online presence?

Also, if you know someone from your timezone who would like to proofread ponyfiction for free, you can bring them to the group).

6618236
Yes I do need specific person in my time zone. I need an editor so one of my stories and they should be in my time zone

Kody Wiremane
Group Admin

6618262
Exactly why in your time zone, may I (genuinely) ask? Is a turn-based approach that bad for your case? Like, you send them your text; they read it and post their thoughts / corrections back to you; you accept them, or write back why you disagree, and so on. And on weekends you can schedule online meetings.

6618286
Then again maybe I don’t need anybody to help me directly in my time zone they can also come from America or where ever the only recommendation I would have is they will have good grammar

Kody Wiremane
Group Admin

6617504
In particular, please title your request threads properly—the required info won't appear in a title by itself, someone should put it there, and it better be the author.

Kody Wiremane
Group Admin

Well, if you can accept proofreaders from other time zones, it widens your choise, doesn't it? You could start your search from the Expert-grade list, for example. Read a proofreader's self-description and recommendations, check their Fimfiction profile to see if they've been online recently, and message them.

6618329
Yes, ok thanks

I just finished writing a story and need it proofread before I can submit

Kody Wiremane
Group Admin

6651101
Ok, please read this page between the reading Applejack and Twilight's "READ" poster, and follow the instructions and rules from there. And ask here for explanation if something is unclear with those.

Hey I'm trying to proofread a someone's work, but they only use FIM and they haven't submitted their story. Do they have to submit their story or is there some other way? I'm running out of options here. I made sure the author turned on the non-published proofreading thing (or whatever it's called) by the way.

Please help.

According to the story creation interface, if their story is unpublished on Fimfic but they have set an Unpublished View password you should be able to use that to follow the URL while logged in. If you have the story URL and the password to view it you should be set.

How do I do that exactly? I had the author put the link out but it just sent me to a 404 page not found.

6653686
The site FAQ should be able to help you further. If they have changed the password, you will have to enter it again.

Where do I enter the password?

I haven't used this particular method yet. It... should pop up when you either go to the story page or try to view a chapter? Seems right.

mind testing it out with me then? here's a link to one of my stories that has an unpublished chapter.

There is no option to see unpublished chapters of a published story. Try linking the chapters directly.
As a side note, working on stories in the browser can be prone to losing unsaved work if the internet connection is interrupted. I do recommend to this author that they do the work somewhere else before uploading here.

No spot for a password or anything?
