Maybe, Possibly, Might Be Rewriting a Chapter · 12:09am Nov 12th, 2021

Hey, readers,

I hope you're enjoying Rising Nightmares! This is something I've been working on and looking forward to for a long time. I've put a lot of work into it, and I hope that it shows!

But I'd like to talk about the past for a little bit.

Some of you might already know that I am something of an uber-perfectionist. I take a lot of pride in my stories and I always want to give my readers my best in everything I do.

So when I look back on something and all I can think is "I can do better than that," it really bothers me.

I've already gone back and done some minor touch-ups to a few chapters over time--nothing major, just polishing some scenes and dialogue for some extra shine--but there's one chapter in particular that's been sticking in my craw recently. Specifically, Case Ten, Chapter Nine: Battle of the Warehouse in Kriegspiel.

I'll be honest: I've never really been happy with this chapter. Large fight sequences are a weakness of mine, and that sequence has always felt...clunky. Like there were too many pieces on the board and I didn't handle them well enough. To me, the chapter seems to be poorly choreographed, meanders for far too long, and is just poorly set up in the first place. I've already rewritten it once, and it's still never really been something I've been proud of.

I want to do better than that. I know I can do better than that, and in fact, I've already started jotting down ideas to try to redo the sequence to be a smaller, easier-to-choreograph fight sequence that I hope would be just as pleasing to my readers, if not more so.

Of course, I'm wondering if it's really worth it at this point. It was over two years ago, after all, and most of you seemed to have liked it. I wouldn't be making any real changes to the story: I'd just be doing it to make myself happy with it. And If I did go through with it, I'd be more than happy to keep the old chapters and set them aside for anyone who liked them and wanted to read them.

I just hope that you all don't think I'm nuts for considering this. But now that that idea has lodged itself into my brain, I'm finding it hard to ignore.

Just throwing my thoughts out there.

See you all on Saturday with a new chapter!

Josiah
