Oh hey, we have new pony now?
So I watched it.
Or, well ... the first two thirds of it? I have a terrible attention span these days. Though really, I kind of checked out after the bit in the unicorn teahouse, as I was able to call the plot twist about the third crystal or whatever.
And y'know what? That's fine. As again, I'm absolutely not the target audience here-- and if you're reading this, you probably aren't, either.
But yeah. The movie was, again ... fine. It's well done all around, with gorgeous animation and solid voice acting work. The thing is, New Pony(tm) feels like a dozen other kids CGI movies that've been released over the last few years. Which, y'know, is entirely the point, since Hasbro likes money. Though really, I kind of wonder-- if this was the beginning of G4 instead of G5, I doubt the fandom would take off like it did. It's like ... the franchise was more or less dead by the time Lauren Faust got ahold of it, so she was free to do whatever the heck she wanted. Not to mention the core characters were ... arguably more nuanced than New Ponies? Like, all of the mane 6 have a 'thing,' where the new ones ... well, Pipp is an 'influencer,' Izzy likes arts and crafts, Zipp is ... not her sister, Sunny is a fangirl, and Hitch is a narc.
This, of course, won't prevent all of them from getting shipped with each other in various geometric combinations, but that's just the internet for you.
Still, complain as I may, the movie does exactly what it sets out to do. The gags land more often than not, and it's a good launching off point for a new era of the franchise. And, y'know, I can't fault any kids movie with the moral of "racism and xenophobia are bad," complete with a literal fucking fascist as an antagonist. Which I'm fairly certain is not a direct reaction to certain parts of the fandom, but ...
So yeah. New pony exists, and the fandom is not ruined. Not sure how the fandom as a whole will take to it, but I'm sure it'll be popular enough among its actual target demographic. Dunno if it'll spark a new wave of fanfictions and memes and whatnot, but that may be for the best.
Still, at least it's a vague justification for my Netflix subscription until the new Cowboy Bebop show and Jojo Part 6 hit, so bonus?
I like the new ponies. Yeah they are pretty one note but so were the main 6 at the start. It took a bit to flesh out the main 6 and I imagine it will be the same here.
I don't think G5 will be as big as G4 but I think it has a chance of being reasonably popular if it maintains this level of quality.
I agree with everyday gamer you're comparing nine Seasons of the G4 crew with one Movie of the G5 gang. Watch Friendship Is Magic parts 1 and 2 alone and the girls aren't very complex in that either.

Honestly, I'll take what I can get. The film being predictable just means it's coherent and logical.
