Let's wind back the clock about 1000 years, sometime around the time of Genghis Khan's birth. Genghis Khan has Celestia as his immortal, mighty steed to take over the world, while his Mongol horde rides the back of the sapient equines. (ponies) Let's say these ponies are larger than the show's version and can carry a human with ease on their back. How much stronger would the horse archers, and in general cavalry units of the Mongol horde be if the horses were actually intelligent?
Not to mention, how strong would the Mongol Empire be? Could they take over the world?
First off, if you write such a story, then I will definitely read it
I would imagine quite the bond between archers and their sapient steeds. They would be in briefings together with their commanders. They would depend upon each other immeasurably so.
The pony would wince everytime their archer would nock one of those “crescent arrows”.
These are the arrow heads that are designed to burrow into flesh and dig around - very effective against horses - imagine an equine receiving one of those in the shoulder or hip area. And they would be spurred to gallop on, no matter what.
Cavalry charges? Sans the rider and place extra armour on the pony. Just as human soldiers would hesitate charging a machine gun, ponies would prefer not to charge a wall of pikes without strong armour on their breasts, necks and face.
All in all, the Mongols and their steeds would rule the world.

The human and the pony would probably have a romantic relationship, making them fight for one another all the harder.

They would until the Great Khan dies and leaves his expansive empire to his five sons.
Potentially, they MAY have been weaker for it, finding themselves relying more on the higher intellect of their mounts, and less on their own ingenuity.
Ultimately, there can only ever be speculation on this hypothetical scenario, and no genuine means of finding a definitive answer.
