Villain Critique: Darth Vader from Star Wars · 7:17pm Feb 18th, 2021
Good morning, everyone. After some thinking, I've decided to make this into a series where I get to critique either mine or your favorite villains. Just let me know which villain you want me to critique and I'll do my best to give you the critique that he or she deserves.
Again, there will be spoilers if you haven't watched, read, or played any of the media that these villains have appeared in. You have been warned. Also, there are villains that I may not know anything about, so be sure to PM me some information about them if you want.
One more thing. This is just my personal opinion and you don't have to agree with me if you don't want to. Just please be nice, constructive, and considerate, especially when telling me why you disagree in the comments down below or via PM.
Without further ado, let's get started with the villain that you all know and love: Darth Vader.
I may not have watched or seen that much Star Wars before, but I have seen and heard enough information to know about Darth Vader and why he is such a popular and well-known antagonist. Here's what I know and like about him so far:
- Design(s): His black armor and cape are very nice to look at. They give him a sense of both mystery and threat while also concealing the tragedy surrounding his life. They also emphasize his role as one of the galaxy's most feared tyrants, next to his master, Emperor Palpatine. This is one of the best villain designs I've ever seen.
- Personality: As Anakin Skywalker, he was a kind-hearted and thoughtful towards others despite his life as a slave and growing up with a father. But after losing literally everything and everyone he swore to protect and being manipulated by the Emperor into letting his fear of that consume him, he became a short-tempered, ruthless, and distressed, yet completely loyal to said Emperor. His personality is very three-dimensional, complex, and well-developed, as well as shows off his extremely tragic and sympathetic life, despite his horrible actions.
- Backstory: His backstory is very well-written and well-executed, as well as understandable. He was born into slavery, grew up without a father, 90% of his childhood was bad, he was disrespected by everyone, manipulated by both the Jedi and the Emperor, lost the love of his life, was separated by his children and best friend, lost everything and everyone he swore to protect, and to top it all off, he had to spend the rest of his life in his iconic, robotic suit after being nearly and literally burned to death in order to keep himself alive. That's a lot of tragedy for a good-hearted and nice person to go through.
- Abilities: His abilities are very well-animated, powerful, and great to look at. He's very proficient with a light saber and has great control over the Force. These are some of the things that make him a very powerful and dangerous threat and gives him a good reason to be considered one of the, if not the, galaxy's most feared tyrant.
- Weaknesses: Despite how powerful he is, he does have at least two weaknesses: technology and himself. He's very vulnerable to electricity and his suit runs on batteries. If he's separated from a power source for too long, his life support and mechanisms would ultimately fail to work. Besides that, his other weakness is his rage and anger, making him vulnerable to defeat as Kenobi did on Mustafar. These weaknesses are a huge part of what makes him feel realistic and well-written as a character.
- Character Arc/Development: Next to Prince Zuko, Anakin Skywalker/Darth Vader has one of the best redemption arcs of all time (in my opinion, at least). He started out as a kind-hearted, intelligent, and friendly person who lived with his mother. But after losing everything and everyone he had overtime and being manipulated by Palpatine, he soon turned into a feared and ruthless, yet confused and conflicted enforcer. It only took the love of his son and the fact that he still had good in him that caused him to sacrifice himself in order to be redeemed.
- Miscellaneous: His voice is very iconic, as well as his iconic line that he said to his son, Luke Skywalker: "Luke, I am your father".
- Overall: He is a very well-liked villain and for good reason. The way he's written is near-perfection. While he did have some cringy moments, he's still not only one of the best villains, but also one of the best characters, of all time.
Again, if any of you have a favorite villain that you want me to critique, let me know either in the comments down below or via PM. Also, be sure to give me some information of your villain if I don't know that much about them.
What do you think of this critique and this villain? Did you like both of them? If so, why or why not? Please let me know.
Have a fantastic day.
Very well done.
Would you consider writing about Thanos from MCU sometime in the near future?
