My Little Pony Movie News 01/30/2021 · 4:51pm Jan 30th, 2021

I feel as if I’m getting more questions than answers off this one picture alone

GOOD MORNING, FIMFICTION FANATICS!!! This is the Dramamaster829; Critic, Actor, Writer, Motivational Speaker and Occasional Singer and after two years since my previous film blog I can safely say we do have some additional news on our subject in question. Last time we’ve shared a discussion about this movie, there wasn’t much information to work with and all we’ve received are rumors and speculations. From what we’ve been able to confirm in recent events over the years, we were able to disclose a number of things:

Lauren Faust would not be involved with Generation 5… and even Tara Strong confirmed that Twilight Sparkle wouldn’t even return…

Let us all bow our heads in respect for this revelation…

*Paused*

But after a period of time, we’ve received further news of what we ‘are’ able to expect going forward with a film slated to debut later this year (Provided movie theaters are back in operation or we’re reduced to a ‘video on demand’ release). A new cast will play the starring roles for the upcoming feature, a new setting has been developed, and even the lore itself has evolved from what we had grown used to these past few years. While it still remains too early to tell what more’s to come prior to this project, there is much speculation worth talking about in regard to a movie that can either make or break Generation 5 as we know it. And after a period absent from putting together blogs, what with all the projects I’ve been developing with some close friends, I finally have the time to throw in my own two cents about what we do know about this upcoming movie thus far. So without further ado, it’s high time we finally take another dive into the upcoming feature that, as of right now, is simply titled…

The ‘My Little Pony’ movie…

Though I do think this title could stand for a little more ‘pizzazz’.

Numerous articles have gone on to state that this movie serves as a continuation of the world brought to life not just by ‘Friendship is Magic’ generally, but even ‘Pony Life’ as well…

BOO!!!

I know… I know…

But apparently, rather than preferring from starting from scratch as previous generations have done before, instead the company behind this movie believes there’s already this vibrant world they can draw from (I mean they wouldn’t be ‘wrong’). From what we understand, they believe there’s plenty of places around Equestria yet to be touched on, so much not even the last ‘My Little Pony’ movie was ever to cover (Not without installing deleted material in an art book).

You don’t even work in movies…

SHUT UP!!! *Takes a deep breath* Anyways, the company has proposed that rather than abandoning both the franchise’s cast and their stories, instead the movie aims to take place within the same world the two aforementioned series spent years putting together. What they ‘are’ planning is to shift ahead and focus on an entirely new generation of ponies from unexplored corners of Equestria (Probably WAY ahead of a future when Twilight is in full rule over Equestria). So in a way, fans of old will immediately find numerous easter eggs from previous generations while introducing the new fans to an entirely new world with keen focus on diversity and inclusion.

Now as we move ahead with this blog, to address the elephant in the room, it’s understanding why even now there are some fans who are still unsure whether or not this movie is a great idea. Especially considering the focus of this story centers on one character highlight as an ‘Activist’ who wants to ‘work to make the pony world a better place’. Now why does ‘that’ sound familiar?

Yeah, Saberspark would totally point this one out if he hasn’t already…

While I personally don’t reveal things about myself, I’ve never been a very ‘political’ kind of person, but I do believe in a better change for all. And ‘activists’ have been pushing the whole campaign for social change, different scenarios yet all the same. Now there’s nothing wrong with fighting for your beliefs, it can simply be done in one of two ways: There’s the ‘peaceful’ approach to being an activist or… you can be like those people on the news… from BOTH sides…

HOW DARE YOU?!?!

Anyways, so as not to ensure a war, I get why the studio would want to take this approach. With recent events that’s been on the air for some time, whether any of which is true or not, their aim for this movie is to promote a modern day issue that can serves as a teaching lesson for audiences young and old alike. There have been movies that have taken this approach before and for the most part, they’ve been ‘very’ successful. But some would argue that there are those who take that concept too far and when Hollywood interferes with a project deemed to ‘mature’ or ‘dark’ for their target audience, their meddling does show, and it can turn a ‘work of art’ into complete ‘garbage’ and lacking with ‘originality’. While we still don’t know what more is still to come with this movie, we can only hope that there is still promise that this can be a good movie for all our fans to look forward to and one that is sure to offer a lasting first impression for Generation 5.

Add to the note that our main lead is an activist seeking the betterment of the ‘pony’ world. Yet as we recalled back in Generation 4, Twilight Sparkle sought friendship not just amongst the ponies but also griffons, dragons, changelings, hippogriffs… and yes, even the ‘Yaks’. And if a recent animatic made it clear that Gen 4 has been acknowledged, whether or not their stories have become ‘legends’ in Gen 5 or not, it’s important to note that ‘continuity’ is a daunting obstacle for this project, and we can only hope it’s not just ‘ponies’ being the center focus. Not to mention it’s understandable why some fans worry they may be witnessing an ‘MLP’ movie in the style of ‘Zootopia’. But if the feature can project such a touching story surrounding the theme in it’s own unique way, rather than trying to repeat what more successful projects have already done before, there is that hope worthy of keeping our fingers crossed for.

For me, when it comes to what I’m looking for with this movie, I believe in two elements that make a movie spectacular: Great storytelling… and unforgettable characters. The animation can be nothing short of breathtaking, the music so mesmerizing you feel entranced, and even the themes itself can have a lasting effect on audiences. But for a movie to receive all the positive reviews and an outstanding box-office revenue, if we’re not expecting a ‘critically acclaimed’ feature, the movie must be ready to take a few steps beyond from what we can expect from any ‘My Little Pony’ project and to demonstrate that it’s reaching out for fans expecting a project unlike anything they’ve seen before. Even if it’s still going to take a while for all movie theaters to be open, so long as we find a means to see this movie in some form… there is hope that not only can this picture be worth the price of an admission ticket, but this movie is the very project that our fans were hoping for.

But the bigger question remains: What do YOU think?

I think I want to just see the movie already!

The feeling's very mutual. The movie's not even set to come out till around the fall from what I understand. Hopefully by then, movie theaters reopen by then. If not, I just hope we won't have to pay for an additional streaming service than what we already have.

Booo, too long to wait

But yeah, I hope theaters are open by then

When you have long going series of would make sense to have a new creator on board

Well, the movie is scheduled to be released in September 24. Let's hope the pandemic ends before then so that we can all watch it in the theaters.

other than the movie any news on the cartoon at all i dont know why they would show that animatic so early i know they showed animatics to tease earlier seasons like s5 with the cutie map im wondering ig the cartoon will come out before the movie although with the s10 comic i have a theory that the comic would end when the movie comes out in....september i think? so the g5 series could come out late fall of this year or early spring in 2022. although i did hear rumors that g5 was supposed to come out last year but was delayed cause of covid i dont remember where i heard that though so i could be wrong

Oh absolutely Mr. Ribbert. They have been developing this Gen 5 series for quite a while, even though the subject is the movie. We can only hope it's worth every dollar.

It's not like folks would be so desperate that they riot their way into a theater because there's not really 'tons' of folks guarding them. Then again, folks these days would riot over 'anything' these days.

So assuming this is true, I'm a bit disappointed and a bit fearful about a continuation instead of a clean slate. It wasn’t trying to stick to a chronology that made G4 so great in the first place. G5 would have had an advantage starting its own, since G4 wasn’t even built from the start to be this gargantuan-running series. It actually would have been freeing, without this new show having to tiptoe around a bunch of precedent and power scaling. Which not even G4 was skillful at when when it came to ITSELF. A lot of lore didn’t add up or scale.

I'd have been down with new characters, or a reboot of the Mane 6. I was raised on different versions of Marvel, DC, TMNT, Transformers etc., so it wasn’t going to be an adjustment for me. I was really interested in the idea of Twilight being an Earth pony, and having to work her way around the disparity of being able to cast spells. That's actually one of the (many, MANY) elements I find interesting about The Owl House, with the main protagonist Luz trying to learn magic. I was also very interested in the idea of the 'realms' for the different pony tribes. It was a portrait of ponies at peace, but not at all in harmony.

I'm totally down with not only the effort to include a diverse cast, but where the point is made of reaching out to people who look different and led different lives. But here's the thing, G4 ended with the Elements of Harmony moving on to not just non-pony character, but species without any equine features at all. These species, and more, had begun immigrating to Equestria in The Final Problem fast-forward. Hasbro is certainly not going to be suddenly rebranding the franchise to "My Little Creature." A new cast of ponies getting the Elements of Harmony (or being some other kind of magically designated world savers) seems like moving backwards. Hopefully the new core cast can still find ways of illustrate people from different walks of life. Not only with expanding to some pony subspecies like Kirin, but also just coding the characters beyond Caucasian.

I knew there would be some people in the fandom acting like pissbabies over the news of the "new" thematic direction (even though it's not new at all, that was clearly what G4 was trying to emphasize while it's final seasons). I still remember the embarrassing reactions from even EARLIER possible leaks that AJ's rebooted personality (and actress) could be Black or Hispanic. This change in entertainment that represents broad changes in popular thought and demographics has been going on for decades in television and comics. Protagonist goals like "‘work to make the world a better place" doesn't sound any different from what all the Shonen Jump characters I grew up with yelled about. That quote even sounds like something from any theme song from the 80's, for other animated toy commercials.

We're just getting a deluge of people's totally-not-biased reservations because the internet continues to be both a refuge and spotlight for outdated modes of thought, and where people can bathe in their most primitive anti-social tendencies without real consequence. Also, we're just living through we're living through an era of general anti-progressive backlash. The majority of regressives in geekdom aren't full blown supremacists, forever-Trumpers, or dangerous nutcases like Jetfire2012. Instead the resistance takes the form of an aggressive apathy; individuals fortunate enough to not have to deal with discriminatory behavior and conditions in society, and take umbrage when someone tries to extend any kind of empathetic branch into their bubble. So creators and franchises who make baseline attempts at inclusion get slapped with accusations of "forced diversity" and "heavy handedness."

My actual source of fear for Generation 5 has been the animation. I keep reading about CGI, which could mean a lot of things. It could be the sterile, uncanny-looking work we saw with that "Hello Pinkie Pie" short on YouTube. My best-case dream scenario is something like the 2015 Peanuts movie, or the Captain Underpants movie. Not the exact same style and tools, obviously. But where even though it's clearly 3D models made on a computer, everything still looks like it popped off a glossy kids book.

Why make it a continuation of FIM why can't G5 just be it's own thing and technically it's not G5 but a continuation of G4 "sigh" I've got a really bad feeling about this

Yeah... I'm the wrong person to ask about that. I'm just blogging about all the things I'm hearing about.

You'd have to ask the studio's representative yourself.

Poor Tara Strong. I humbly respect her wishes but rip for the possibility of hearing the voice of our favourite pony book horse alicorn princess Twilight Sparkle in gen 5.:applecry:

5482473
Well Tara Strong is a busy woman, especially on social media. But just as we can't expect her to be a Powerpuff Girl forever, she can't spend the remainder of her career voicing a pony. Just as well, she might not even want to play 'Harley Quinn' forever (Since that one Harley Quinn show features someone else in the role). Who knows? Just because Twilight Sparkle said she is not doing a voice for either the movie or the T.V. series, who's to say she 'never' at least have 'one' spot? Who knows... maybe she will be slightly involved but wants her presence to be a surprise.

Like when Mark Hamill initially said he was done portraying The Joker after 'Arkham City'... and sure enough, he returned for 'The Arkham Knight'. I bet hardly anyone saw that coming.

5482476
True i bet shell move on to bigger and better things.

5482479
Tara Strong is only among the most famous voice actors there is. She's been involved in hundreds of voice acting project (Hopefully that's no exaggeration). There are tons of projects that will be asking for her to take part in. I once met her myself during one of my last convention trips.
