[Companion] New Story · 5:24am Jan 13th, 2021

When the idea for this story came to me, I only had two ideas. The first was that Twilight would want Rarity to recreate the sleepover from their youth as a way to regress away from the stress of actual leadership, which turns out to be far more difficult than Celestia had made it seem. The second was the backstory of how pre-Celestian alicorns had concubines, and how Celestia had abolished the practice, but Twilight resorted to it because the alternative was to be like Celestia: celibate and alone for a thousand years. This widens the gulf between Rarity and Twilight, as well as the gulf between Rarity’s expectations and her actual status. But making this gulf essentially biological really brought in some interesting themes.

The two Mane Six ships I care about the most are RariLight and RariJack, whose dynamics are almost the opposite of each other in my mind. Those three ponies were always my favorite out of the six, so it makes sense that I find their pairings to be deeper and more interesting. This story is in part me exploring the contrast between how I imagine the ships would work. The way I wrote it, either ends in bittersweetness; it’s just about picking the flavor. I don’t know what that says about me. I think RariLight would have ended up being healthy, though, had Twilight stayed just the Princess of Friendship, or ideally a non-alicorn. But all happy relationships are alike. They’re not as interesting to write about.

I hope that I have successfully pulled off a story structure I’ve always admired: one where the smaller story that is told at the beginning is an echo of the one being told around it. if I were a better and more patient writer, I would probably have made a few more passes to really align the two thematically. But at the very least, I am much happier with how the story is now than the one-note melancholy RariLight scene it had been when I started writing it.

You should show this to Monochromatic, the Queen of RariLight.

How do I show a story to a user I’ve never met?

5435003
Oh she did Injuring Eternity? I cried reading that one! But my RariLight is definitely not that sweet and nice!

PM her or post it on her wall. Or message her on Discord

Lol what do I say? “Here is a RariLight story where they’re both effed up b/c my position is that a healthy relationship between an immortal Goddess-Queen and a mortal mare is actually Not Possible”?

Yeah basically. Maybe with slightly more finesse.

It’ll certainly be better than my RariLight story:

TA RariTwi Sh*tfic I Wrote For Monochromatic (Update: Monochromatic Did Not Want To Read It (´°̥̥̥̥̥̥̥̥ω°̥̥̥̥̥̥̥̥`). Can You Really Blame Her Though? ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ )
Rarity is staying in Manehattan for a fashion show or something. Twilight Sparkle visits her hotel room for sexy times. That's pretty much it.

rip re: monochromatic not wanting to read it

"I hope that I have successfully pulled off a story structure I’ve always admired: one where the smaller story that is told at the beginning is an echo of the one being told around it."
Hm. I think I can see that, looking back? At least to some extent. I don't recall it coming to mind when I was going through the story, though, sorry; I wasn't really thinking about comparing the two at all.
Though I also think I might not be the best test audience for that in general, and right now I'm in something of a hurry.
Sorry I don't have better feedback for you there.

Thank you for the commentary as well as the story, though. :)
