It Is Recommendsday, My Dudes #162

And now back to our regularly scheduled program and my attempt to clean out my rookies shelf. (I've only got a few, I'm determined to at least catch up to this month with them.)

It Is Recommendsday, My Dudes #161

Okay, so there's still new people to get through but you gotta remember that this blog series is mostly reliant on my whims. And I'm a little bored on that front, so I'm gonna switch gears and do a different pair of stories. Because I can. Also because I was reminded of one of these stories this last week and they're pretty damn funny.

Probably the hardest genre to get right is mystery. Not only do you need to craft a solid narrative that fulfills all the requirements of a good drama or comedy (because without that it's just a trumped-up logic puzzle), but you also have to create that mystery itself. It can't be too obvious - otherwise why bother - but you also can't make it rely on bullshit and information the reader is never

It Is Recommendsday, My Dudes #159

So continuing down the road to clear out my new authors folder, I'm going to put the focus first on one of the newer folks I really like: pneu. They've got a couple of really good ones, but the one I'm settling on today is my favorite of theirs so far: Haycartes'

    Author's Quarterly Update: Spring 2024

This quarter's been a good news/bad news sort. (For around here, not in general. Life in general is fine.) Good news? I got a ton of writing done, which I'll get to on the specific story entries. I turned a bit of a corner and got some great work done that I'm excited about. Bad news? I am so behind on my reading. I mentioned last time that between Jinglemas and my reading project I had

Headcanons are a thing; not to be confused with head cannons, which are mostly for giant robots. · 1:09am Sep 11th, 2020

Following a conversation on one of my Discords: Random bits of personal headcanon.

- The two Twilights do not get along. At all. They hold professional respect for each other but interact like oil and fire. The human Twilight has deep-seated anxiety and feelings of inferiority towards her counterpart - after all, the other her is an immortal magical princess who was personally trained by (basically) God. It's a lot to live up to. Meanwhile, pony Twilight looks at her other self and sees what her life could have been: being a brilliant academic without the chaos of saving the world constantly and dealing with the mad world of politics and press conferences. Both envy each other, and it taints most of their interactions on a low level.

- Thanks to living in Our Town with the horrible food (remember, Sugar Belle's muffins were the GOOD option), Starlight Glimmer's tastebuds basically committed suicide years ago. Her palate is extremely dead and she will happily eat things nopony else will touch. Her own cooking and preferences trends toward extremely strong flavors (so she can taste them at all) and often incompatible ones that she doesn't understand why nobody else likes it. On the plus side, she has an iron stomach and can eat basically anything even marginally edible.

- Fluttershy is a closet revolutionary. Part of it is her low simmer/high explosive temper (she gets mad very slowly, but when she blows she blows HARD); part of it is the understanding that kindness does not always mean gentleness; and part of it is that she gets along great with Discord for a reason. Sure, she's meek and loving and gentle 99% of the time. But when it comes down to it, she's the one of the group most likely to lead a revolution against an oppressive regime for the betterment of the people. She's a healer, and sometimes you have to cut out the infection to save the patient.

- Vinyl Scratch is perfectly capable of speaking. She just doesn't. She feels that her work should speak for itself and actual words are superfluous.

- The Pinkie Pies switch places constantly. Everybody on both sides of the mirror knows it, but all attempts to stop them or get them to admit it have failed. Now it's just become a sort of unspoken thing where nobody brings it up or thinks about it too hard, because doing so will only make the situation worse. (Cheese Sandwich is really cool with it.)

- The primary reason Rainbow Dash takes things more seriously and safely in later seasons has nothing to do with her friends or the Wonderbolts or growing up. It's that she's realized that Tank, as a tortoise, is probably going to live into his eighties at least and Dash doesn't want to get herself stupidly killed in a dumb stunt and leave him in somepony else's care. He's HER pet, no one else (possibly Fluttershy aside) can be trusted to care for him properly!

- Twilight has had several romantic relationships. However, she is completely unaware that she's actually been in them because she's dense as hell and completely oblivious to the line between 'friend' and 'romantic partner'. One day she's going to figure it out and then realize she has like twenty exes. An apology tour will follow.

- The Young Six are all romantically involved with each other. It's one chaotic polycule cuddlepile.

- Sunset Shimmer is an alicorn - or would be. Celestia has decided not to take her to The Narration Zone yet, as all the attached parts of alicorn-hood would be a problem for Sunset's life as a human. As long as she's decided to remain in the human world, she remains as-is (and Celestia doesn't tell her to prevent angst.) If/when Sunset moves back to Equestria, she's got an hour to unpack her stuff before she's getting immortality.

Everything except the last 2 or so have always been my headcanon. Good taste there.

Brilliant reason for why Princess Twilight would envy her human counterpart. I've always pictured her as a sort of well-intentioned but condescending older sister figure for Sci-Twi, especially when she makes assumptions about her counterpart's life that don't actually apply. (Meanwhile, Sunset is more than happy to troll the princess along with Sci-Twi, because she still has a few grievances to air in the form of harmless, friendly funning about.)

Starlight's utter inability to taste is especially fun if you combine it with the Lunaverse take on Trixie, who has a similiarly... unique palate when it comes to favored flavor combinations. Plus now I can't help but imagine Pinkie split between rehabilitating Starlight's tongue and having a taste-tester for her more extreme recipes.

But when it comes down to it, she's the one of the group most likely to lead a revolution against an oppressive regime for the betterment of the people.

This is flat-out canon.

The Pinkie Pies switch places constantly.

Given some of the more egregious pop culture references, this feels implicitly canon... though it does lead to some awkward questions about which one is Li'l Cheese's biological mother. And how the swapping worked (or didn't) over the course of the pregnancy. :twilightoops:

I wholly approve of Dash trying to avoid a blaze of glory solely out of concern for Tank. It's pitch-perfect for her.

One day she's going to figure it out and then realize she has like twenty exes. An apology tour will follow.

This may or may not be part of her human analogue's frustration with her. It's definitely part of Sunset's.

The Young Six are all romantically involved with each other. It's one chaotic polycule cuddlepile.

 "Success!"
:twilightoops: "I think?"

If/when Sunset moves back to Equestria, she's got an hour to unpack her stuff before she's getting immortality.

Or until Celestia gets so bored during her retirement that she decides to endow Sunset with her deserved cosmic power just so something interesting will happen that she can get involved in.
(Personally, I'm not fond of the idea of Celestia actually getting a say in the process, but this is a neat idea.)

Ah, Glim Glam... care for some gumbo?

Resistance movement =/= revolution. Ask the Jacobites.

These all rule, but the Young Six one rules especially hard. It's always been my personal headcanon and it's great to see it's shared by others.

I've definitely seen stories where Sci-Twi lives under that inferiority complex, but I've never seen the envy go the other way before. Excellent idea. :D I also want to see Twilight's infinite unknown exes.

Neat. If you don’t mind here’s one of mine. Twilight technically died when she exploded in Magical Mystery Cure. When the other 5 die of old age they’re going to get new Alicorn bodies too. Discord knows which is why Fluttershy visibly aging doesn’t bother him.

More evidence you and I get along famously :D

Zeroing in on the Twilights specifically: This is vindicating, because I find it hilarious to think that Princess Twilight is utterly and characteristically hopeless at romance—to the point that one of the reasons she feels inferior to Sci-Twi is that Sci-Twi can at least romance competently (having at least 1 canon boyfriend and 1 canon girlfriend). True to their humility (and insecurity), I think neither realizes the strengths they have that differ from the other until such point that they're pointed out.

It's pretty fantastic to think Princess Twi also envies the simple, bookish life SciTwi gets to enjoy on top of that. It's like, she knows that life would be unfulfilling alone but then Sci-Twi also gets to enjoy it with friends, too??? Unfair?????

I do tend to think there's an age difference, too. Pri-Twi in her (at this point) late 20s and Sci-Twi in her late teens. So at least Princess Twi can understand the other her as younger, still in her Golden Oaks years (although that makes the romance edge Sci-Twi has on her that much more infuriating :D).

The alicorn Sunset bit is extra hilarious if it happens with no warning whatsoever. I've hour after she's calmly talking with Twilight while walking through ponyville/canterlot and BAM, Alicornhood to the muzzle.

Apply that to Sunset. Have her die tragically while jumping in front of a mugging attempt gone bad in the human world. Took a bullet to the liver, bleeding FAST, dying from shock, all the girls crying and not accepting it, she breathes get last role confessing her love to one of them, believing it's her end (I'm a shipper, fight me)... And then she explodes (in her beloved's arms). Thirty seconds later she's back in her harmony angel form. It's permanent now.

Bonus points if the bleedout and explosion happen with cops and paramedics as witness :pinkiecrazy:
