Computer is toast. Updates halted. · 1:38am Apr 18th, 2020

So as of Tuesday I told my computer to install the Tuesday updates and restart, and upon shutting down, I've been without a computer.

It seems to be softlocked. You boot it up only to have it show a blue screen saying "Your computer encountered a problem and needs to reset." It then counts up a percentage and once it hits 100% restarts. Upon restarting it says "Preparing automatic repair" as it boots up. EXCEPT it then loads into a screen that says "Choose your keyboard layout"

That is basically a kill screen. You can't actually choose anything on that page as it disables all usb ports. So I'm stuck on it forever. Restarting the computer again causes it to go back to "Your computer encountered a problem" and the entire thing starts all over again in an endless loop.

All attempts to boot it into safe mode have failed. Stopping it three times? Doesn't work. Get a thumb drive and have it boot from it? My computer ignores it. It just does the same two error screens over and over.

So yeah, I no longer have a computer. My work thankfully is safe on google docs, but without a computer I can't do much.

I'm really sorry, but there is no way I'm trying to write on my phone, and the computer I'm using now isn't something I can just use for that kinda stuff. So... yeah sorry everyone.

I'm going to have to go buy a new computer. When I have one again I'll let you all know.

Is the BIOS set to prioritize booting from USB, are you able to access the BIOS menu at all? If you have a USB to reinstall with, a cheaper option than buying a whole new computer might be to just replace the hard drive and reinstall the OS. Though I guess that would depend on how comfortable to are with taking computers apart. Its really not that hard to do as the hard drive is usually easy to get to. When I got my new laptop last year the first thing I did was upgrade the hard drive and memory. I bought a 1TB SSD for $99. Best of luck.

What model is the pc? Also that's a software issue and the new pc could just get the same buggy update. Ms has been ona roll with those atm. I work in IT and get like 7 of these a month due to varying reasons from clients. If you want some help pm me and I'll shoot you my discord info. Also you should crash it right then you see the circles begin to spin and do it 5 times. Then see if you can get into the advanced troubleshooting instead of safe mode and try a system restore to before Tuesday. Then pause updates for a month and don't update on Tuesdays unless the pc is backed up.

I can get into bios, but it seems my computer is old enough that it doesn't support booting from a usb.

It gives me three options to boot from:
1-CD drive
2- name of my hard drive
3- Other devices.

It literally only says "other devices" and it's set to yes. I even disabled the other two options to force it to boot from the usb. The computer ignored that, and upon restart immediately re-enabled the other two options.

I was talking to a Microsoft tech via chat and the last thing he suggested was make a boot CD/DVD for windows 10, which isn't easy to get/do.

I even heard from a friend that their computer will only boot from usb from one port, so I tried every single one, and mine has TEN. Sadly none of them worked.

To be honest though, the computer was built back in 2012, so maybe it's just time anyway.

I had a friend help me custom build it at Fry's Electronics back in 2012, so I don't really remember what's in it. (It was during the hard drive shortage too, so i only have a 300 gig drive in it.)

I've tried shutting it off several times in a row when I see the windows logo pop up, but it ignores all attempts to get into anything else. Bios is the only thing I've managed to access. In fact, even if I interrupt it before it can finish "compiling error info" it STILL says "Applying automatic update" upon restart. It just flat out refuses to go into any mode that will let me system restore, which as far as I know IS safe mode.

Basically in short, computer is nearly a decade old now, and probably should be replaced anyway. Hell my monitor is due for replacement as well. The last power supply I had for it began to leak black ooze from the part that plugs into the computer, and while I got a replacement. The monitor will occasionally stop reading it's getting power, forcing me to mess with it for a few minutes to get it to work again.

Okay first off You won't get a USB bootable the normal way if it is just a BIOS mobo as it will not support GPT booting normally. You need to use a tool like https://www.heidoc.net/joomla/technology-science/microsoft/67-microsoft-windows-and-office-iso-download-tool to get the ISO of the OS then use something like rufus https://rufus.ie/ to make it a MBR Flash Drive that the BIOS will understand. Also under the BIOS the HDD priority will be some where and in that you will see the actual bootable USB now as a hdd sometimes and just need to pick it there. You need to put in your usb (on another pc), open rufus, pick the ISO, then expand the advanced options in rufus and pick mbr instead of GPT and then check the box for older BIOS (partition align ect.) Then you can finally boot that USB when it's finished after you click start.

If you pop open the side of the PC and take an overview shot with flash I can probably tell you what motherboard you got.

If your gonna build new I recommend just going simple to a ryzen 3600 non X and a B450 Mobo and 16GB of ram at about 3600 speed if you can get some, or like 3200 even is fine.

Good luck.

EDIT: also this is the advanced menu I was talking about which is before safe mode https://www.tenforums.com/tutorials/2294-boot-advanced-startup-options-windows-10-a.html
