In the last 18 hours or so:

I sang and played guitar at the 4PM and 6PM Christmas Vigil masses, a half hour carol service from 9:30 till 10, a "Mass During the Night" which is what they call the Midnight Mass now since the Vatican lets us do it at 10PM, and an 8AM "Mass at Dawn." So merry et cetera to all, and to all a good "Bounce of the Sugar Plum Fairy."

A man of many talents. And a very Merry Christmas to you and all yours, today.

Merry Christmas and Happy Hearths Warming, MIke. Sleep well!

Merry Christmas!

I've never understood how, as I age, it seems to be the *rest of the world* which gets less good at tolerating late nights. Like, is starting something at midnight such an imposition to people that the church (the church!) is giving up centuries of tradition to make it less inconvenient? Are enough people put out so badly by a midnight start that it's worth it for them to flex it?

Yea, I don't get it either. I used to love midnight mass, because I got to stay up past midnight as a kid, and then we went home and opened presents, sometimes not even going to bed, depending on how fun they were. It's like the same thing with Trick or Treat. Who wants to trick or treat at 4 in the afternoon?

Thanks, folks:

For the record, there are still plenty of places that do an actual Midnight Mass. But I mostly think the "Powers-That-Be" just wanted to make it so folks wouldn't feel so silly when they called the rectory Christmas Eve and asked, "What time is the midnight mass?" Because for the last 10 years, it's a legitimate question!

For my part, I've always been a morning person, so I was very happy when they started letting us do the thing earlier. It used to be singing and playing at 4PM, then 6PM, then the carols at 11:30 followed by the Midnight Mass and maybe 5 hours of sleep before staggering out of bed to get back to church for the 8AM mass. But I am a wimp in many ways. :twilightsheepish:

It was a pleasant but hectic season, so I am only now getting around to saying I'm glad you had a good Christmas. Happy New Year!
